Closes #8

Summary

  • Android: a second startPayment while one is in flight now resolves immediately with { success: false, error: "A payment is already in progress" } (same message as iOS). It no longer overwrites the stored promise or requests a second Google Pay sheet. The pending slot lives in a small PendingPayment class backed by an AtomicReference, because startPayment runs on the JS thread and onActivityResult on the main thread.
  • Hook: usePaymentCheckout().startPayment has a synchronous useRef in-flight guard, so two calls in the same frame start one native payment. An overlap with the hook's own payment returns the in-progress result and does not touch hook state. A payment started elsewhere (HybridPaymentHandler or another hook instance) is rejected natively, and the hook records it in result/error like any failed payment. reset() no longer clears isProcessing.
  • Single instance: the hook and the exported HybridPaymentHandler now share one PaymentHandler (internal src/paymentHandler.ts, getPaymentHandler()). This means the existing iOS guard also covers hook + direct calls. Swift is unchanged.
  • Docs: use-payment-checkout.md (in-progress result, new reset() behavior) and hybrid-payment-handler.md (one payment at a time).

Test plan

  • cd package && bun run typecheck: passes
  • cd package && bunx eslint src: passes
  • cd package && bun run test: 34/34 pass. The 5 new tests fail on main.
    • Hook: two synchronous startPayment() calls lead to one native call, and the second returns the in-progress result. reset() mid-flight keeps isProcessing and the guard. The guard is released after a native rejection.
    • Shared instance: the hook and HybridPaymentHandler use the same native object. A direct call during a hook payment gets the in-progress result. A hook call during a direct payment gets it too, and the hook records it in result/error.
  • JUnit PendingPaymentTest: 6/6 pass. Run with ./gradlew :gmisoftware_react-native-pay:testDebugUnitTest from example/android, which also compiles the changed HybridPaymentHandler.kt.
  • bun run docs:build: passes
  • cd example && bunx expo run:ios: not run
  • cd example && bunx expo run:android: not run
  • Manual: double tap on GooglePayButton in the example app (TEST environment): not run

Risk

  • Behavior change: reset() no longer clears isProcessing. Apps that used reset() to clear a stuck spinner now have to wait for the native sheet to settle.
  • Stuck guard: if onActivityResult never arrives (e.g. the activity is destroyed under the Google Pay sheet), the Android handler stays "in progress" until the app restarts. Before, the next call silently overwrote the stored promise. iOS has had the same exposure since 0.0.17.
  • android/src/test/ ships in the npm tarball because files includes android/src. This matches the JS __tests__ that are already published. junit is declared as testImplementation, so a consumer's root ./gradlew test resolves it.

Notes

  • The handler is still created eagerly at import. Lazy creation and web stubs are Importing the package requires the native module; expo is a required peer #24's scope, and getPaymentHandler() is the seam for that.
  • PAYMENT_IN_PROGRESS_ERROR is internal and not exported.
  • The native guards stay per instance, not process-wide. A consumer calling NitroModules.createHybridObject('PaymentHandler') directly is not covered.

- Android: reject a second startPayment while one is in flight with
"A payment is already in progress" instead of overwriting the stored
promise. The pending slot is atomic because startPayment runs on the
JS thread and onActivityResult on the main thread.
- Hook: add a synchronous in-flight ref guard so two calls in the same
frame start one native payment; reset() no longer clears isProcessing.
- Share one PaymentHandler instance between the hook and the exported
HybridPaymentHandler, so the native per-instance guard covers both.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Prevented overlapping payments across direct payment calls and checkout flows.
    • While a payment is in progress, additional attempts immediately return a failure: “A payment is already in progress.”
    • Existing payments continue uninterrupted, and new payments can begin after the current attempt settles.
    • Resetting checkout state during an active payment no longer clears its processing status.
  • Documentation

    • Updated payment and checkout API documentation to describe concurrent-payment behavior and state handling.

The hook and native handler now reject overlapping payment requests with an in-progress error. The hook and exported handler use one lazily created native handler. Android stores and settles one pending payment callback. Tests and API documentation cover the updated behavior.

The hook and exported handler now use the same cached native handler. The hook rejects overlapping calls and retains its processing state until the active payment settles. Tests cover overlapping hook and direct-handler calls, reset behavior, and subsequent payment attempts. The API documentation describes these behaviors.

Android now claims one pending payment callback and settles it once. A concurrent request receives the in-progress error without launching another Google Pay sheet. Tests cover settlement, overlapping claims, and concurrent access. The API documentation describes rejection of overlapping requests.

Overlapping payments are rejected consistently, and the documentation now matches how the hook reports them. No actionable merge-blocking risk remains.

Explanation

Issue #8 coding requirements are met. Android uses PendingPayment with an atomic claim, rejects overlap with A payment is already in progress, and does not replace the active callback. The hook uses a synchronous guard and keeps it active through reset(). getPaymentHandler() shares one handler between the hook and HybridPaymentHandler. Jest tests cover synchronous overlap, reset, rejection, and shared calls. JUnit tests cover atomic claim and settlement behavior. The unrun manual double-tap check does not block this coding assessment.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The Kotlin, TypeScript, tests, constants, and documentation changes directly implement or verify issue #8. The shared handler accessor supports the required hook and direct-handler behavior. No unrelated change is demonstrated.

Full details: Security Check

Explanation

No medium, high, or critical security vulnerability is introduced. The diff adds only payment concurrency control, a cached handler accessor, an error constant, and tests/docs. The new paths do not add authentication, authorization, deserialization, network, filesystem, or secret-handling sinks. Android now rejects overlapping calls through an atomic slot, and the hook shares the existing handler; these changes reduce duplicate-payment risk. The prior unresolved review thread concerns functional hook state, not a security vulnerability.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 26.67% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff. Analyzed 15 functions across 9 files. (1 skipped: 1 unsupported.)

Resolution

Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

Comment thread package/src/hooks/usePaymentCheckout.ts
The hook ignores overlaps with its own in-flight payment without touching
state. A payment started through HybridPaymentHandler or another hook
instance is rejected natively, and the hook records that like any failed
payment. Spell this out instead of claiming hook state is never affected.
