Evaluate GNU C typeof operands of variably modified type [EDGcpfe/28891] - #457
The operand of a C typeof must be evaluated when its type is variably modified, but the front end treated it as unevaluated, so its side effects were lost.
When the IL is lowered, scan_typeof_operator keeps the operand, still scanned as an unevaluated operand as sizeof does, and evaluates it once:
In a block-scope declaration, it becomes a statement before the declarators. This is once per declaration, not once per declarator, matching C23 and GCC's fix for PR c/124576.
In an expression, it is evaluated where the cast that uses the type is evaluated. The new typeof_operand_pending flag on the typeref carries it to lower_c99.c.
A use of a typedef doesn't repeat the evaluation, and nothing is evaluated in a parameter declaration.
The bounds of the resulting type are already evaluated wherever the type is used. So the operand is evaluated only when it has side effects of its own and those bounds have none, which keeps gnu/c/vla-12 from running a bound twice. A source-generating back end reproduces the typeof itself, so nothing is added for it.
regressions/edg-28891 covers declarations, typedef uses, casts, a statement expression inside the operand, and an operand that isn't variably modified and stays unevaluated. regressions/edg-28891-single covers several declarators, and regressions/edg-28891-params block-scope prototypes. The run-time tests require DO_IL_LOWERING, because with the C++-generating back end the behavior comes from the host compiler. gnu/c/pr114831-2 now passes, and gnu/c/gnu99-const-expr-3 gets the error its source expects.
Known limits:
If an operand has side effects both in the result type's bounds and outside them, the ones outside are still lost, as before.
In a parameter list, the front end still rejects an operand whose bound uses an earlier parameter ("a parameter is not allowed"), which GCC accepts. That is an existing limitation, not changed here.
Tested with the full test suites for edg_x86_64 and edg_x86_64_cp, compared with a run of main, and with the new and changed tests for edg_x86_32 and edg_x86_32_cp.
The Changes entry uses this PR's number until there is an issue for it.
The parser now evaluates variably modified C typeof operands at declaration and expression use points. Type state tracks pending operands, and VLA lowering processes extracted evaluations. A regression test covers declarations, typedefs, casts, and sizeof cases.
Changes: C typeof operand evaluation
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Capture and track typeof operands src/il_def.h, src/il_alloc.c, src/il_display.c, src/expr.c
Typerefs now track pending typeof operands. Eligible operands are cached and reparsed when their type is variably modified. The parser adds runtime evaluation in declarative contexts or marks the operand pending in expression contexts.
A new helper extracts pending operands from variably modified types. Declarations, casts, and VLA lowering incorporate those evaluations. The regression test checks evaluation behavior, including typedef reuse.
The change does not currently build. After the build is fixed, GNU C code using variably modified typeof can still crash the compiler in prototypes or with nested statement expressions, or can skip repeated side effects. IL files from older builds could also be misread. These issues need to be resolved before merging.
Security architecture risk: Moderate · up to 9ba8e
The new evaluation behavior spans several language-use contexts and introduces a source-supported failure path for repeated declarations. Validation remains pending, while the demonstrated exposure is limited to compilation rather than a verified privilege or isolation breach.
Retained concerns
Medium · reliability · inferred: The repeated-declarator design sends accepted evaluated expressions into a copying primitive that cannot preserve statement-expression scopes. For example, inside a function, typeof((({ ++k; 0; }), (int (*)[k])a)) p, q; has a variably modified outer operand but an ordinary int statement-expression result. The parser's variably modified statement-result rejection therefore does not exclude it. Copying the operand for q recursively reaches enk_statement with CE_NO_OPTIONS and the internal-error branch, breaking per-compilation failure containment. This is a source-derived path, not an executed failure; the statement-insertion argument mismatch currently also blocks validation of the reviewed head.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The identified failure path requires control of source submitted to a compilation accepting GNU statement expressions and variably modified types. Its evidenced scope is that compilation's internal-error path. Shared-service availability, tenant crossover, memory corruption and privilege gain have not been established.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
inferred — The introduced path is source operand to accepted nested statement-expression node to secondary-declarator recursive copy to unsupported-node internal error. The copy limitation predates this PR, but the repeated-declarator caller is new. This supports a failure-containment concern, not a runtime-verified security exploit.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Existing controls reject statement expressions whose own result type is variably modified. That does not exclude an ordinary int statement expression nested inside a variably modified comma expression. Separately, the reparse error-count gate, pending-bit clearing and typedef traversal stop constrain the normal evaluation lifecycle.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — The expression-copy implementation documents why evaluated statement expressions need more than tree copying: associated statements, scopes, variables and initializers must also be preserved. Its unevaluated-copy fallback creates a dummy expression and therefore is not a semantics-preserving substitute for the new runtime evaluations.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Define per-declarator ownership for runtime typeof evaluations, including a semantics-preserving replication contract for statement scopes and fresh VLA-bound evaluation state, rather than relying on generic expression-tree copying.

Bump the IL version for the changed typeref layout.
The IL writer stores typeref entries as raw bytes, and the reader loads those bytes into the current a_type layout. The new typeof_operand_pending bit changes the positions of the following packed flags, but IL_VERSION_NUMBER remains "7.0". A standalone consumer can therefore accept an IL file from an older 7.0 producer and interpret those flags with the wrong meanings.
If producer and consumer builds must match exactly, document and enforce that requirement instead. Otherwise, update IL_VERSION_NUMBER or preserve the existing bit layout.

Review comment at @src/il_def.h at line 10778:
Update the layout around a_type’s typeof_operand_pending bit and
IL_VERSION_NUMBER so older 7.0 IL files cannot be silently read with shifted
flag meanings: either bump IL_VERSION_NUMBER or preserve the existing packed-bit
layout. If compatibility instead requires producer and consumer builds to match
exactly, document and enforce that requirement.

The operand of a C typeof operator must be evaluated when it has a
variably modified type, but it was treated as unevaluated, so its side
effects were lost. When the IL is lowered, keep the operand (scanned as
an unevaluated operand, as for sizeof) and evaluate it once: in a
block-scope declaration, before the declarators; in an expression, where
the cast that uses the type is evaluated. A use of a typedef does not
repeat the evaluation, and nothing is evaluated in a parameter
declaration.
The dimension expressions of the resulting type are evaluated wherever
that type is used, so the operand is evaluated only if it has side
effects of its own and those dimensions have none. A source-generating
back end reproduces the typeof, so nothing is added for it.
Add regression tests. gnu/c/pr114831-2 now passes, and
gnu/c/gnu99-const-expr-3 gets the error its source expects.
