Lifetime extension through a member of a temporary in GNU and Clang modes [GH #90] - #389
Fixes GH #90 ([GNATS 29059]): in GNU and Clang modes, binding a reference to a member of a class temporary did not extend the temporary's lifetime ([class.temporary]/6).
int d;
structA { int b; ~A() { ++d; } };

constint &r = A().b;
assert(d == 0); // failed with --g++ / --clang: A() already destroyed
}

unchanged (those versions use the C++11 rule)
Root cause
Core issue 616. In GNU and Clang modes A().b was still a prvalue (the C++11 rule), so the reference bound to a copy of the member. GCC 9 and Clang 4 implement Core issue 616 (A().b is an xvalue), also in -std=c++11. daveed's fix for EDGcpfe/29032 enabled the rule for those versions in cmd_line.c but was backed out because it regressed Clang's SemaCXX/constant-expression-cxx2a.
Why that regressed. That test runs with --clang --clang_version 999999, so with the cmd_line.c change Y(0,0).z1.n takes the xvalue path in the constexpr interpreter. For . and .* on a class prvalue, that path called mark_complete_object_initialized on the prvalue. The shortcut dates from before C++20 (P1331), when a constexpr constructor had to initialize every member; now it need not, so the read of the uninitialized z1.n folded to a garbage value instead of being diagnosed. The same bug was already present in strict --c++20 mode (static_assert(W().n == 0); was accepted for struct W { int n; constexpr W() {} };).
Removing the shortcut exposed one gap. Value initialization of a class without a user-provided default constructor zero-initializes the object, but the interpreter only cleared the storage without recording the members as initialized. Without fixing that first, removing the shortcut rejects B().y in Clang's dcl.init.general/p16-cxx20 (GH69890).
GNU vectors. With Core issue 616, X{...}.v is an xvalue, which exposed two vector bugs in constant evaluation: subscripting a vector xvalue read the wrong bytes, and a vector member initialized from a whole vector value only had its first element marked as initialized.
Commits
Mark the zeroed members of a value-initialized class as initialized (interpret.c): prerequisite for commit 2. Value initialization of a class without a user-provided default constructor now uses init_subobject_to_zero. Classes with a user-provided default constructor are cleared as before but not marked.
Apply Core issue 616 when emulating GCC 9+ and Clang 4+ (cmd_line.c, interpret.c, exprutil.c, il_walk.c): the fix for the issue.
cmd_line.c: daveed's change.
interpret.c: remove the "fully initialized" marking for . and .* on a class prvalue (eok_dot_field, eok_pm_field), which is what made the change regress.
Subscript a GNU vector xvalue in constant evaluation (interpret.c), from review: eok_vector_subscript took the address path only for lvalues, so X{{10, 20, 30, 40}}.v[3] evaluated to 3. Xvalues now take the address path.
Track GNU vector elements and apply Core issue 616 in C++11 modes (cmd_line.c/.h, exprutil.c, il_walk.h, interpret.c), from the second review:
cmd_line.c: the setting moved out of the cpp14_mode block, so GCC 9+ and Clang 4+ also get it in C++11 mode.
exprutil.c: is_address_of_auto_object also sets look_for_temporaries, so return &make().arr[1]; warns for a trivially destructible class (no explicit temporary).
interpret.c, write side: when process_expr_work has stored a whole vector value, each element is marked initialized (one place, after the done: label, instead of finding every store). constexpr_copy_object_init_bits copies the state of each element, and a class constant's vector member gets each element marked.
interpret.c, read side: reading a whole vector (do_glvalue_to_prvalue) or copying an object containing one now requires each element to be initialized, not only the first. Without this, the write side would turn a partly initialized vector into a fully initialized one (e.g., X x; x.v[0] = 1; Z z(x.v); return z.v[3];).
il_walk.h, cmd_line.h: comments only.
Commits 1 and 2 each have a Changes entry in src/pending_changes/ (gh-90-value-init-zeroed-members.txt, gh-90-lifetime-extension-member-of-temporary.txt; commit 4 extends the second; both pass edg-collect-changes --check). Commit 3 fixes a case exposed by commit 2, so it has none. Each commit builds and passes its tests. Based on main at ad4cfc4.
Changes to existing expectations
All are improvements, except that constexpr-delegating3 still fails with a different diagnostic, and a few warnings in C++11 GNU mode now match C++14 mode.

Found while working on this; to be raised separately:
Member function call on a class prvalue (eval_selector_arg): the same "fully initialized" marking remains, so static_assert(W().get() == 0); is still accepted in --c++20.
Delegation to a defaulted constructor in constant evaluation (constexpr-delegating3).
Partly written local vector: v4 a; a[0] = 1; return a[3]; is accepted in constant evaluation (also on main).
No actionable comments were generated in the recent review.

Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The demonstrated impact is on existing compiler invocations processing affected C++ expressions and on the resulting language behavior. The inspected production changes do not demonstrate added service, tenant, credential, or deployment authority; incomplete security coverage prevents a broader safety conclusion.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Selected-member reads retain per-subobject initializedness checks rather than gaining blanket initialized status from their containing temporary. This preserves a control against accepting indeterminate constant-expression reads; it does not establish a host-memory exploit or its absence.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — The separate member-call receiver path still marks class-rvalue storage completely initialized. The relevant block is unchanged between the PR base and head. This is a remaining consistency question, not an established introduced vulnerability or demonstrated increase in exposure.

Explanation
The title "Lifetime extension through a member of a temporary in GNU and Clang modes [GH #90]" matches the main change. The PR objectives say it addresses GH #90 by treating a member selected from a class prvalue as an xvalue, so a reference extends the temporary's lifetime in GNU and Clang modes for emulated GCC 9+ and Clang 4+. The raw summary supports this: it changes the selection_from_prvalue_is_xvalue condition in src/cmd_line.c, updates is_address_of_auto_object in src/exprutil.c, and adds the gh-90 lifetime test. The title is specific and short, with a clear issue reference. The PR also covers secondary changes such as value-initialization tracking, the removal of a constexpr shortcut, and GNU vector per-element initialization. The title does not mention these, which is expected for a title that highlights the primary change.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Requirement [#90]: binding a reference to a member of a class temporary (const int &r = A().b;) must extend the temporary's lifetime in GNU and Clang modes, as GCC and Clang do.
Implementation evidence (PR description and whole-PR summary; head beb3853):
src/cmd_line.c sets selection_from_prvalue_is_xvalue for C++11 and later when rvalue references are enabled. The flag applies in GNU mode when the emulated GCC version is 9.0 or later, and in Clang mode when the Clang version is 4.0 or later. Under Core issue 616, A().b is an xvalue, so the reference extends the temporary.
src/exprutil.c: is_address_of_auto_object follows the xvalue to the class prvalue. Return-to-temporary diagnostics are kept.
src/interpret.c: constant evaluation stays correct after the change.
Test evidence:
regressions/gh-90.sft.cpp checks A().b, A().i[0], A().*pm, and A().i in C++11, C++14, and C++20, in strict mode and in emulated GCC 9/15 and Clang 4/19.
regressions/gh-90-old-modes.sft.cpp checks that emulated GCC 8.3 and Clang 3.9 keep the prvalue behavior.
Strict mode behavior is unchanged, as the PR table states. The version thresholds match the GCC and Clang versions that the issue's cited behavior depends on.
Limitations: No repository read tool was available. This verdict relies on the PR description and whole-PR summary, not on a direct source read. The PR description leaves the full-suite checkbox unchecked for the current head. The C++11 expectation changes from the latest commit are recorded but not confirmed by a full run on this head. The implementation evidence for #90 is not affected by this gap.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
All changed areas connect to [#90] directly or as fallout of its Core issue 616 change.
Lifetime change: src/cmd_line.c, src/exprutil.c, and src/il_walk.c (comments only) implement the xvalue rule and its warning behavior. src/cmd_line.h and src/il_walk.h change comments only.
Prerequisite for removing a constexpr shortcut: value-initialization zeroing in src/interpret.c is required before the mark_complete_object_initialized shortcut can be removed. Without it, B().y is rejected (GH69890). The PR states this dependency.
Vector changes: GNU vector xvalues are now subscripted through the address path. Per-element initialization tracking for vectors is needed because the xvalue rule exposes vector member access. The read-side check prevents the write-side change from marking partly initialized vectors as fully initialized. Tests gh-90-vector and gh-90-vector-diag cover these cases.
Expectation updates in imported and regression fixtures follow from the changed behavior. Each update has a stated reason in the PR tables. These include the cwg6xx, expr.const/p2-0x, constexpr-value-init, constant-expression-cxx2a, decltype72, name-independent-decl6, and n1285 fixtures. The deleted constexpr-delegating3 32-bit recordings are documented as identical to the default output.
New tests and pending-change entries verify these behaviors.
Items listed under "Not in this PR" (Core issue 1213, member calls on class prvalues, defaulted-constructor delegation, and partly written local vectors) are not in the changed code.
No demonstrated unrelated change was found. Limitations: No repository read tool was available, so this verdict relies on the PR description and whole-PR summary. The ignored file tests/expectations/edg_x86_64/imported.log was excluded and is not relied upon.

@daveedvdv-nvidia, could you take a look when you have time? This picks up your cmd_line.c change for EDGcpfe/29032 (Core issue 616 for GCC 9+ / Clang 4+),
which was backed out after it regressed Clang's SemaCXX/constant-expression-cxx2a.
The regression came from mark_complete_object_initialized in the ./.*

value-initialization marking that removing it depends on.

Claude tells me that it requires the opnd1->is_lvalue test for the eok_vector_subscript case in interpret.c to be updated to opnd1->is_lvalue || opnd1->is_xvalue. I haven't tested that, but it makes sense.

Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
Enable the rule in supported C++11 emulation modes.
This condition is inside if (cpp14_mode), so --c++11 --clang --clang_version=190100 still uses the old prvalue rule. The C++11 recording still expects the three CWG 616 redeclaration errors, while Clang tests the same aliases in C++11 mode. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
As a result, binding const int &r = A().b still destroys A() at the end of the full-expression in that mode. Enable the version-gated rule for GNU and Clang C++11 modes too, while retaining the existing behavior for older versions.

Thanks for the vector fix! Unfortunately, it exposes another problem (found with the help of Claude): Taking the address path for an xvalue means the element is now read through its own address, so its own "initialized" bit is checked, and most paths that store a whole vector only set the bit of the first element. The per-element marking in extract_value_from_constant covers aggregate initialization of a class member, but not other stores. For example, this worked before the third commit and now fails with "access to uninitialized object" (--c++20 --gnu=150200):
The lvalue path already had the same problem (e.g., v4 a[2] = {{1, 2, 3, 4}, {5, 6, 7, 8}}; return a[1][3]; or a union member of vector type), so it is not new, but the xvalue change makes it reachable from code that used to work.
Marking the elements in the vector case of extract_value_from_constant (the ck_aggregate branch for tk_vector) and adding a tk_vector case to constexpr_copy_object_init_bits fixes the array and union examples, but not the constructor one above (the mem-initializer path marks only the start of the member). So the vector stores need to be found more systematically. Could you look into that and add the example above to gh-90-vector?
Separately, CodeRabbit's "Enable the rule in supported C++11 emulation modes" comment (cmd_line.c) is relevant: GCC 9 and Clang 4 apply Core issue 616 in C++11 mode as well, but the new condition is inside the cpp14_mode block, so with --c++11 --gnu=150200, A().b is still a prvalue (and const int &r = A().b; still binds to a copy). Please enable it for the GNU and Clang C++11 modes too (with the same version checks), and add a C++11 mode to the tests. Strict C++11 mode is fine as it is.
edgcpp#90]
Value initialization of a class without a user-provided default
constructor zero-initializes the object before calling the constructor.
The interpreter cleared the storage but did not record the subobjects as
initialized, so reading a member that the constructor does not set was
rejected in a constant expression:
struct A { constexpr A() {} int x; };
struct B : A { int y; };
static_assert(B().x == 0); // Previously rejected.
The constructor-call setup in interpret.c now uses init_subobject_to_zero
for such classes. Classes with a user-provided default constructor are
cleared as before, but not marked.
This is needed by the next commit, which stops treating every member of a
class prvalue as initialized; without it, "B().y" above would be rejected
as well (Clang's dcl.init.general/p16-cxx20, GH69890).
Updated expectations: gnu cpp2a/constexpr-init18 now passes; clang
dcl.init.general/p16-cxx20, SemaCXX/constexpr-value-init and
class.inhctor.init/p1 no longer report false errors.
The existing constexpr assertions read initialized members. Add a C++20 test that reads an uninitialized member through .* on a class prvalue and expects a constant-expression diagnostic.

Under Core issue 616, selecting a member of a class prvalue yields an
xvalue, and binding a reference to it extends the lifetime of the whole
temporary. GNU and Clang modes kept the C++11 rule (a prvalue), so
const int &r = A().b;
bound to a copy of the member and destroyed A() at the end of the
full-expression. GCC 9 and Clang 4 implement the issue, so cmd_line.c now
enables selection_from_prvalue_is_xvalue when emulating those versions or
later. This reapplies the change backed out for EDGcpfe/29032.
That change regressed Clang's SemaCXX/constant-expression-cxx2a because,
for "." and ".*" on a class prvalue, the interpreter marked the whole
prvalue as initialized (eok_dot_field and eok_pm_field in interpret.c).
Since C++20 a constexpr constructor can leave members uninitialized, so
"Y(0,0).z1.n" folded to an indeterminate value instead of being diagnosed.
The marking is removed; the previous commit fixed the one case where the
per-subobject state was incomplete. The same bug already affected strict
C++20 mode ("static_assert(W().n == 0);" was accepted).
is_address_of_auto_object (exprutil.c) now looks through such an xvalue to
the class prvalue, so returning a pointer into the temporary (e.g.,
"return &static_cast<const int &>(A().b);") still warns; "return A().b;"
is already diagnosed through is_glvalue_for_auto_object_or_temp_subobject.
The traverse_addressing_subtree comments (il_walk.c) are updated to match.
Tests: regressions/edgcppgh-90 (lifetime, including the GCC 9 and Clang 4
modes), regressions/edgcppgh-90-old-modes ("A().b" is still a prvalue for GCC
8.3 and Clang 3.9), regressions/edgcppgh-90-warn (warnings),
regressions/edgcppgh-90-uninit-member ("W().n" and "W().*pn" read an
uninitialized member), cwg/cwg616. Updated
expectations: gnu init/ref19 now passes; clang drs/cwg6xx no longer
rejects the Core issue 616 cases; clang expr.const/p2-0x now diagnoses a
read of a volatile prvalue's member; clang cxx2c-placeholder-vars loses an
"expression has no effect" warning on "S{}._", as in strict mode; a note
caret moves to the member in SemaCXX/constant-expression-cxx2a; gnu
cpp0x/constexpr-delegating3 (delegation to a defaulted constructor, a
separate bug) still fails, but with "access to uninitialized object"
instead of a garbage value.
With Core issue 616, a GNU vector member of a class prvalue (e.g.,
"X{...}.v") is an xvalue, but eok_vector_subscript took the address path
only for lvalues, so it read the operand's address as the vector value:
"X{{10, 20, 30, 40}}.v[3]" evaluated to 3 instead of 40. Xvalues now take
the address path too.
The element is then read through its address, so it must be marked
initialized. When a class member of vector type was initialized
(extract_value_from_constant), only the bit for its first element was set,
so "X{a * a}.v[3]" (and "X x{a}; x.v[3]") gave "access to uninitialized
object". Each element of such a member is now marked.
Tests: regressions/edgcppgh-90-vector.
…dgcpp#90]
Constant evaluation now marks each element of a GNU vector as initialized
when a whole vector value is stored (at the end of process_expr_work), and
constexpr_copy_object_init_bits copies the state of each element. This
fixes spurious "access to uninitialized object" errors when subscripting a
vector member initialized from a vector value (e.g., Y(a).v[3]).
To keep that sound, reading a whole vector (do_glvalue_to_prvalue) or
copying an object that contains one now requires each element to be
initialized, not only the first.
When emulating GCC 9+ or Clang 4+, selecting a member of a class prvalue
now produces an xvalue in C++11 mode too, as those compilers do.
is_address_of_auto_object now also looks for temporaries on the
addressing path, so returning a pointer into a member of a trivially
destructible class prvalue (e.g., &make().arr[1]) is diagnosed.
The re-recorded imported clang tests improve: cwg6xx loses three bogus
cwg616 errors and expr.const/p2-0x gains its expected volatile error. In
C++11 GNU mode, gnu cpp0x/decltype72 now passes, and gnu
cpp26/name-independent-decl6 and clang C11/n1285 lose a few warnings, as
in C++14 mode.

Summary
Fixes
GH #90([GNATS 29059]): in GNU and Clang modes, binding a reference to a member of a class temporary did not extend the temporary's lifetime ([class.temporary]/6).--g++(GCC 9+),--clang(Clang 4+), C++11 and laterrbound to a copy ofb,A()destroyed at end of full-expression--g++(GCC < 9),--clang(Clang < 4)Root cause
A().bwas still a prvalue (the C++11 rule), so the reference bound to a copy of the member. GCC 9 and Clang 4 implement Core issue 616 (A().bis an xvalue), also in-std=c++11. daveed's fix for EDGcpfe/29032 enabled the rule for those versions incmd_line.cbut was backed out because it regressed Clang'sSemaCXX/constant-expression-cxx2a.--clang --clang_version 999999, so with thecmd_line.cchangeY(0,0).z1.ntakes the xvalue path in the constexpr interpreter. For.and.*on a class prvalue, that path calledmark_complete_object_initializedon the prvalue. The shortcut dates from before C++20 (P1331), when a constexpr constructor had to initialize every member; now it need not, so the read of the uninitializedz1.nfolded to a garbage value instead of being diagnosed. The same bug was already present in strict--c++20mode (static_assert(W().n == 0);was accepted forstruct W { int n; constexpr W() {} };).B().yin Clang'sdcl.init.general/p16-cxx20(GH69890).X{...}.vis an xvalue, which exposed two vector bugs in constant evaluation: subscripting a vector xvalue read the wrong bytes, and a vector member initialized from a whole vector value only had its first element marked as initialized.Commits
interpret.c): prerequisite for commit 2. Value initialization of a class without a user-provided default constructor now usesinit_subobject_to_zero. Classes with a user-provided default constructor are cleared as before but not marked.cmd_line.c,interpret.c,exprutil.c,il_walk.c): the fix for the issue.cmd_line.c: daveed's change.interpret.c: remove the "fully initialized" marking for.and.*on a class prvalue (eok_dot_field,eok_pm_field), which is what made the change regress.exprutil.c:is_address_of_auto_objectlooks through the new xvalue to the class prvalue, so returning a pointer into the temporary (return &static_cast<const int &>(A().b);) still warns.return A().b;is already diagnosed throughis_glvalue_for_auto_object_or_temp_subobject(make returning a reference bound to a temporary an error in C++26 (P2748), fix for [GH #106] #388).il_walk.c: comments only.interpret.c), from review:eok_vector_subscripttook the address path only for lvalues, soX{{10, 20, 30, 40}}.v[3]evaluated to 3. Xvalues now take the address path.cmd_line.c/.h,exprutil.c,il_walk.h,interpret.c), from the second review:cmd_line.c: the setting moved out of thecpp14_modeblock, so GCC 9+ and Clang 4+ also get it in C++11 mode.exprutil.c:is_address_of_auto_objectalso setslook_for_temporaries, soreturn &make().arr[1];warns for a trivially destructible class (no explicit temporary).interpret.c, write side: whenprocess_expr_workhas stored a whole vector value, each element is marked initialized (one place, after thedone:label, instead of finding every store).constexpr_copy_object_init_bitscopies the state of each element, and a class constant's vector member gets each element marked.interpret.c, read side: reading a whole vector (do_glvalue_to_prvalue) or copying an object containing one now requires each element to be initialized, not only the first. Without this, the write side would turn a partly initialized vector into a fully initialized one (e.g.,X x; x.v[0] = 1; Z z(x.v); return z.v[3];).il_walk.h,cmd_line.h: comments only.Commits 1 and 2 each have a Changes entry in
src/pending_changes/(gh-90-value-init-zeroed-members.txt,gh-90-lifetime-extension-member-of-temporary.txt; commit 4 extends the second; both passedg-collect-changes --check).
