What does this PR do?

Three fixes for the workspace NetworkPolicy configuration:

  1. Preserve empty ingress/egress lists (apis/controller/v1alpha1/devworkspaceoperatorconfig_types.go)
    Removes omitempty from the Ingress and Egress JSON tags of NetworkPolicyConfig. An empty list means "deny all traffic", and an unset field means "use the default rules". With omitempty, an empty list is dropped when a client marshals the config, so a deny-all config written by another operator (such as che-operator) falls back to the default allow rules. The CRD schema is unchanged; make generate_all produces no schema diff.

  2. Do not mutate defaultConfig in GetDefaultNetworkPolicy (pkg/config/defaults.go)
    GetDefaultNetworkPolicy is a public getter, but it also overwrote the package-level defaultConfig.Workspace.NetworkPolicy. setDefaultNetworkPolicy already initializes that field, so the assignment is removed.

  3. Return copies of the default rules from GetDefaultNetworkPolicy (pkg/config/defaults.go)
    The function returned the package-level default rule slices directly. On OpenShift, the elements also shared LabelSelector pointers and MatchLabels maps with the defaults. A caller that extends the returned rules could corrupt the operator's defaults for the rest of the process. The rules are now deep-copied before they are returned. slices.Clone is not enough here because it copies only the top level.

What issues does this PR fix or reference?

Follow-up to #1719. Replaces #1720, which covered only the second fix.

Is it tested? How?

  • pkg/config/sync_test.go: TestResolveConfigForWorkspaceWithNetworkPolicy resolves an external DevWorkspaceOperatorConfig with empty ingress and egress and checks that both stay non-nil and empty. Note: this test fails without the omitempty change only because the controller-runtime fake client round-trips objects through JSON. Against a real API server, DWO reads ingress: [] back as an empty slice either way; the change matters on the marshal side, when a client writes the config.
  • pkg/config/defaults_test.go:
    • checks the exact default rules on Kubernetes and OpenShift, including that the extra OpenShift rule targets the given operator namespace;
    • checks that GetDefaultNetworkPolicy leaves defaultConfig.Workspace.NetworkPolicy unchanged;
    • checks that changing the returned rules (label maps, From/To slices) leaves the package-level defaults unchanged. This test fails without fix 3.
  • Ran go test ./pkg/config/..., go vet, make generate_all, and make fmt.

Remove the assignment to defaultConfig.Workspace.NetworkPolicy from
GetDefaultNetworkPolicy.

GetDefaultNetworkPolicy is a public helper intended to return the
default ingress/egress rules for network policies, and modifying the
package-level defaultConfig was an unintended side effect. The default
network policy configuration on defaultConfig is already initialized by
setDefaultNetworkPolicy.

Drop `omitempty` from the Ingress and Egress JSON tags of
NetworkPolicyConfig.

An empty list has a distinct meaning for these fields: it denies all
ingress/egress traffic, while an unset field falls back to the default
rules. With `omitempty`, an empty list was dropped during serialization,
so a deny-all configuration silently turned into the default
allow rules.

Add a test that resolves an external DevWorkspaceOperatorConfig with
empty ingress and egress lists and verifies they stay empty.

Network policy configuration

Layer / File(s) Summary
Copy default network policy rules
pkg/config/defaults.go
GetDefaultNetworkPolicy returns deep copies of ingress and egress rules. The copy helpers preserve nil slices.
Preserve explicitly empty rule lists
apis/controller/v1alpha1/devworkspaceoperatorconfig_types.go, pkg/config/sync_test.go
The ingress and egress JSON fields no longer use omitempty. A configuration resolution test checks that explicitly empty rules remain non-nil and empty.

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 28b68

Explicitly empty rules remain distinct from unset rules, and the inspected paths show no API rejection or other actionable merge risk.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 28b68

The change preserves explicit deny-all settings and prevents callers from corrupting network-policy defaults. The inspected configuration and policy-generation paths retain the intended restrictions. External-client integration and deployed-cluster behavior were not validated.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — Default corruption could previously affect later default-derived configurations within the same operator process. The head removes that getter-mediated mutation path. Each generated policy remains scoped to the workspace namespace and workspace-ID pod selector; shared configurations can still affect multiple consuming workspaces.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — The inspected path does not establish a new control bypass: explicit empty rules survive configuration merging and reach the managed policy without acquiring default allow rules. This conclusion is bounded to policy construction, not a validation of deployed network enforcement or other additive NetworkPolicies.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The existing resolution path fetches a workspace-selected configuration through the operator client. Configuration supplies traffic rules, while the operator determines policy identity, namespace, pod selector and policy types and sets the workspace owner reference. The serialization and getter changes do not introduce a new privileged entrypoint.

Declare ingress and egress nullable in the CRD.

The JSON tags serialize nil slices as null. The generated CRD defines both fields as arrays without nullable: true, so a client that applies marshaled DevWorkspaceOperatorConfig output can be rejected by CRD validation. The merge code correctly ignores nil slices, but it runs only after API admission.

Add nullable markers to both fields and regenerate the CRDs. This preserves nil as unset and [] as deny-all.

Does the CodeRabbit review make sense?

Short answer: no. CodeRabbit posted exactly one actionable finding, and it is incorrect — the Kubernetes behaviour it warns about is the opposite of what actually happens. It also missed a real issue in this PR. Details and verification below.

1. The one finding is wrong

Declare ingress and egress nullable in the CRD. The JSON tags serialize nil slices as null. The generated CRD defines both fields as arrays without nullable: true, so a client that applies marshaled DevWorkspaceOperatorConfig output can be rejected by CRD validation.

Three independent reasons this doesn't hold:

a) The apiserver prunes non-nullable nulls before validation — it does not reject them.

apiextensions-apiserver, pkg/apiserver/schema/defaulting/prunenulls.go:

func isNonNullableNonDefaultableNull(x interface{}, s *structuralschema.Structural) bool {
	return x == nil && s != nil && s.Generic.Nullable == false && s.Default.Object == nil
}

// PruneNonNullableNullsWithoutDefaults removes non-nullable
// non-defaultable null values from object.
func PruneNonNullableNullsWithoutDefaults(x interface{}, s *structuralschema.Structural) {
	case map[string]interface{}:
		for k, v := range x {
			schema := getSchemaForField(k, s)
			if isNonNullableNonDefaultableNull(v, schema) {
				delete(x, k)        // <-- dropped, not rejected

ingress/egress match that predicate exactly: the generated CRD has zero nullable: markers and no default: on either field. This runs at customresource_handler.go:1359, inside the decode path, which executes before customResourceStrategy.Validate. So "ingress": null on the wire is silently dropped and the field is simply absent — which decodes back to a nil slice, i.e. precisely the "unset → use default rules" semantics this PR wants. The premise of the finding is inverted.

b) The suggested fix is a functional no-op that costs a schema change. With nullable: true the null is stored rather than pruned; either way the Go side ends up with a nil slice. Identical behaviour, in exchange for modifying a shipped v1alpha1 CRD schema — and it would void this PR's "make generate_all produces no schema diff" property. The repo currently has nullable in 0 places across all CRDs, so it would also be inconsistent with every other optional slice field here.

c) Nothing in this repo marshals-and-applies a DWOC anyway. The only DWOC write is controllers/backupcronjob/backupcronjob_controller.go:271, a client.MergeFrom status patch. Since origConfig is a DeepCopy taken before only Status is mutated, "ingress": null appears identically on both sides of the merge-patch diff and cancels out. The patch body contains only status.

Also worth noting: CodeRabbit burned the account's single hourly included review on this, and self-labelled it 🟡 Minor / "Quick win" — so even on its own terms it was never going to be the comment that mattered.

2. What the review should have caught

🔴 The PR half-fixes the very defect it set out to fix. It correctly removes the write to defaultConfig, but GetDefaultNetworkPolicy still returns direct aliases to package-level globals:

  • pkg/config/defaults.go:269 — ingressPolicyRules = defaultKubernetesIngressPolicyRules hands back the global slice itself.
  • pkg/config/defaults.go:272 — return ingressPolicyRules, defaultEgressPolicyRules, nil returns the global defaultEgressPolicyRules unchanged in both branches.
  • On OpenShift the appended slice has a fresh backing array, but its elements are shallow copies sharing *metav1.LabelSelector pointers and their MatchLabels maps with defaultOpenShiftIngressPolicyRules.

The doc comment directly above the function says it "is exposed publicly for other operators (such as che-operator) that need to read and extend the default rules." A consumer doing rules[0].From = ..., or mutating a returned MatchLabels map, corrupts the operator's defaults process-wide for the remainder of its lifetime. That is the same class of shared-mutable-global bug the PR is fixing, left in place one line below the deletion. Returning DeepCopy()d slices closes it.

🟡 The new test proves a fake-client artifact, not the production bug. TestResolveConfigForWorkspaceWithNetworkPolicy fails without the omitempty change only because controller-runtime's fake client Get round-trips through json.Marshal/Unmarshal (pkg/client/fake/client.go:551), which honours omitempty and drops the []. Against a real apiserver, ingress: [] is stored as an empty array (pruning removes nulls, not empty arrays) and the typed client decodes it into a non-nil empty slice with or without the tag — omitempty is a marshal-side concern only, and DWO only ever reads this CR.

To be clear, this does not make the change wrong: removing omitempty is still correct and valuable for the external write path — che-operator does create/update DevWorkspaceOperatorConfig CRs, and with omitempty a deny-all Ingress: [] it set would be silently dropped on marshal. That's a genuine bug worth fixing. The issue is narrower: the PR description's claim that "the test fails without the omitempty change" is presented as evidence of the fix, when the test is actually green for a different reason than the one that matters. Worth either rewording the description or adding a test that exercises the marshal direction.

🟡 Minor test-quality nits in defaults_test.go:

  • The Kubernetes case asserts assert.Equal(t, defaultKubernetesIngressPolicyRules, ingress) — comparing the return value against the exact global it returns. Tautological; it passes regardless of whether the rules are right.
  • The OpenShift case asserts only assert.Len(t, ingress, len(defaultOpenShiftIngressPolicyRules)+1). The magic +1 never checks the one interesting thing: that the extra rule actually targets operatorNamespace. operatorNamespace is the function's only parameter and no assertion covers its effect — pass "test-namespace" or "" and the test is equally green.

✅ Checked and fine: TestGetDefaultNetworkPolicyDoesNotMutateDefaultConfig sets the package-level defaultConfig.Workspace.NetworkPolicy = nil, but setupForTest (pkg/config/common_test.go:52) registers a t.Cleanup that restores defaultConfig from a deep copy, so there's no cross-test pollution.

The review doesn't make sense as a signal for this PR. The underlying change is sound and worth merging; the gap worth addressing before merge is the aliasing in GetDefaultNetworkPolicy, which is squarely in scope given the PR's stated goal.

GetDefaultNetworkPolicy returned the package-level default rule slices
directly. On OpenShift the appended slice had a fresh backing array, but
its elements still shared LabelSelector pointers and MatchLabels maps
with the defaults. A caller extending the returned rules (the function
is public for operators such as che-operator) could therefore corrupt
the operator's defaults for the rest of the process lifetime.

Deep-copy the default ingress and egress rules before returning them.

Tighten the tests: assert literal expected rules on Kubernetes instead
of comparing against the returned global, check that the OpenShift rule
targets the given operator namespace, and verify that mutating the
returned rules leaves the defaults unchanged.
