Summary

First step of the management API v2 rework: configuration changes now take effect through the API itself instead of requiring the external node agent to restart or rebuild containers.

  • PUT /v1/config — partial merge against the persisted desired configuration, validated against the schema. Entries marked "dynamic": true in the schema are applied immediately through a service-registered applier; restart-required entries are persisted and reported as pending_restart with current/pending values. The response reports both applied and pending_restart entries.
  • Live GET /v1/config — returns the effective running values plus the pending restart diff instead of a startup snapshot.
  • Schema v2 mutability — every schema entry now carries an explicit dynamic flag:
    • hbbr applies downgrade-threshold, downgrade-start-check, limit-speed, total-bandwidth, single-bandwidth live (the built-in console already proved these are runtime-mutable via atomics; total-bandwidth additionally retunes the active shared limiter)
    • hbbs applies always-use-relay live and relay-servers through the existing Data::RelayServers0 hot-update channel
  • Durability contract — config updates follow the established bans contract: the merged desired state is persisted atomically (tmp + rename) first, and running state changes only after the write succeeds; a write failure leaves the active configuration intact.
  • GET /v1/logs?tail=N — bounded in-memory ring buffer (2000 lines) of recent log lines captured from the standard log format in both binaries, so management clients no longer need container log access.

Compatibility

  • API version stays 1; all existing endpoints and the bans contract are unchanged.
  • Deployment-time settings (ports, bind, key paths) remain restart-required by design; they belong to compose/systemd.
  • Existing deployments that do not enable management are unaffected.

Test plan

  • cargo test --lib — 18 passed, including 5 new tests covering: dynamic apply + pending reporting, write-failure non-activation, unknown/invalid value rejection, secret redaction and placeholder semantics, log ring buffer tail/truncation
  • cargo check --locked --all-features --all-targets (CI parity)
  • cargo build --bin hbbs --bin hbbr
  • CI managed-image build

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added management API support for updating configuration, including partial updates and saved settings that load at startup.
    • Supported settings can now take effect without a restart; other changes are reported as pending restart.
    • Configuration responses redact secret values while preserving existing secrets when updates use placeholders.
    • Added management API access to recent log entries.

…ng and in-memory logs

Promote the management API so configuration changes no longer require the
external node agent to restart or rebuild containers.

- PUT /v1/config: partial merge against the persisted desired config,
validated against the schema; dynamic entries are applied live via a
service-registered applier while restart-required entries are reported
  as pending_restart with current/pending values
- GET /v1/config now returns live effective values plus the pending
restart diff instead of a startup snapshot
- schema version 2 marks every entry with an explicit dynamic flag;
  hbbr applies downgrade-threshold, downgrade-start-check, limit-speed,
total-bandwidth and single-bandwidth live, hbbs applies
always-use-relay and relay-servers live through the existing
  Data::RelayServers0 channel
- config persistence follows the bans contract: atomically persist the
merged desired state first, activate only after the write succeeds
- GET /v1/logs: bounded in-memory ring buffer of recent log lines,
captured from the standard log format in both binaries
- secrets remain redacted in every API view; resubmitting the
placeholder keeps the stored secret unchanged

📝 Walkthrough

The management API adds configuration updates with persistence, dynamic application, and restart-pending reporting. It also adds an endpoint for recent logs and connects both server loggers to the in-memory log buffer.

Changes: Management API

Layer / File(s) Summary
Configuration schema and managed state
management-schema.json, src/management.rs
The schema marks settings as dynamic or non-dynamic. Management state tracks effective values, saved overrides, and changes pending restart. Startup loads saved overrides.
Configuration update and dynamic application
src/management.rs, src/relay_server/*, src/rendezvous_server/server.rs, docs/management.md, Cargo.toml
PUT /v1/config validates updates, persists overrides before activation, and reports applied and pending values. Registered handlers apply supported dynamic settings. Documentation describes update and secret-handling behavior. Tests cover updates and persistence; Hyper is added as a development dependency.
Log capture and retrieval
src/common.rs, src/main.rs, src/hbbr.rs, src/management.rs, docs/management.md
Both server loggers use the shared formatter, which copies formatted lines to the management log buffer. GET /v1/logs returns a bounded tail of stored lines.

A configuration update made during hbbr startup can be saved but incorrectly reported as requiring a restart instead of taking effect. Register the applier before starting the listener.

- Line 54: In the hbbr startup path, register `command::apply_dynamic` with
`set_dynamic_apply` before calling `management::start("hbbr", port)`, so the
listener cannot accept configuration updates before the applier is available.
Keep the existing startup guard and state update unchanged.

A PUT /v1/config request arriving between management::start and
set_dynamic_apply persisted dynamic entries but reported them as
pending_restart instead of applying them immediately. Register the
applier first, matching the hbbs startup order.
