generate client --language python: buf/validate unresolved, and a failed run deletes the library's python tree #1163

Closed

Description

@antoinetoussaint-byte

What happens

In codefly-dev/authority (branch feat/installation-scoped-role-grants, PR codefly-dev/authority#7), this command:

codefly generate client --from authority/local/grpc --language python --no-facade --name authority-client --force

fails in the Python step:

host/authority/v1/work_context.proto:11:1:imported file does not exist (buf/validate/validate.proto)
runBuf: cannot update buf: process exited with code 100

Two problems:

  1. The Python staging tree cannot resolve buf.build/bufbuild/protovalidate, which the service's proto/buf.yaml declares. The Go and TypeScript steps of the same command succeed against the same contract.
  2. On failure, the command deletes libraries/authority-client/python/ entirely, including the hand-written authority_client/work_context.py and its tests. A failed generation should leave the outputs untouched, the way codefly generate proto already does.

The Python bindings were last generated with companion ghcr.io/codefly-dev/proto:0.0.17. The installed CLI (development build, 2026-10-25) selects 0.0.16.

Expected

The Python bindings generate, or the command fails without touching the library tree.
