fix(better-ccusage): stream JSONL files to handle transcripts over 512 MB - #54

…2 MB Reading each Claude Code transcript with readFile(file, 'utf-8') throws "RangeError: Invalid string length" once a file is larger than V8's maximum string length (about 512 MB), so daily, weekly, monthly, session and blocks all crashed on a single oversized transcript. Add processJSONLFileByLine(), which streams the file and splits it on LF only, and use it in getEarliestTimestamp, loadDailyUsageData, loadSessionData, loadSessionUsageById and loadSessionBlockData. node:readline is not used because it also splits on U+2028/U+2029, which JSON.stringify leaves unescaped, so such lines would be dropped. A leading UTF-8 BOM is still ignored, as the previous trim() did. Fixes cobra91#53 Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
📝 WalkthroughWalkthroughThe JSONL loaders now stream files line by line instead of reading entire files into memory. The helper handles line-ending, BOM, blank-line, ordering, and callback behavior. Tests cover edge cases and files larger than V8’s maximum string length. ChangesJSONL streaming ingestion

Code Review Roast 🔥 — CLEAN | Recommendation: Merge
Body🏆 Best part: The author didn't reach for 💀 Worst part: There is no worst part. I went looking for a body to roast and found a well-documented, module-private helper with a JSDoc that explains why it exists (V8's 512 MiB string limit), why it doesn't use readline, and why it still strips a leading BOM. The 📊 Overall: This is the kind of PR that makes a reviewer's job miserable in the best way — there's nothing to destroy. The streaming approach is correct, the edge cases are covered by tests, the performance is better than before (29.6s → 26.3s on 📁 Files Reviewed (1)

beforeAllwrites about 512 MiB to the temp directory on every test run, including local runs and every CI job. The suite also allows up to 120 s per test. This adds large disk and time cost to a unit-test file that otherwise runs in milliseconds, and it can fail on runners with a small or memory-backedos.tmpdir().Gate the suite behind an environment flag so the regression coverage stays available but does not run by default.

Summary
Fixes #53.
daily, weekly, monthly, sessionandblockscrash withRangeError: Invalid string lengthwhen a single Claude Code transcript is larger than V8's maximum string length (536,870,888 UTF-16 code units, about 512 MB). The loaders read each.jsonlfile into one string withreadFile(file, 'utf-8')and then split it, so one oversized file stops the whole report. This PR adds a module-private
processJSONLFileByLine()helper indata-loader.tsthat streams the file and splits it into lines. The five functions that loaded whole transcripts now use it:getEarliestTimestamp()sortFilesByTimestamp()(report loaders, blocks --live)loadDailyUsageData()daily,weekly,monthlyloadSessionData()sessionloadSessionUsageById()session --idloadSessionBlockData()blocksPer-line parsing is unchanged. The only edit inside each loop is that
continuebecamereturn, because the loop body is now a callback. This follows the same idea as ccusage/ccusage#706, with one difference: the helper does not use
node:readline. readline also treats U+2028 and U+2029 (and a lone CR) as line breaks.JSON.stringifyleaves U+2028/U+2029 unescaped, so real transcripts can contain them, and readline would split such a line into invalid fragments that are silently dropped. I found this by comparing old and new output on real data (see Validation). The helper splits on LF only, like the oldsplit('\n'), and still ignores a leading UTF-8 BOM, as the oldtrim()did.Validation
pnpm typecheck✓ andpnpm lint✓.pnpm test: 385 passed, including 15 new tests. On my Windows machine the 5_jq-processor.tstests fail becausejqisn't installed; they fail the same way onmain.processJSONLFileByLine: line order, empty and whitespace-only lines, CRLF, a leading BOM, U+2028/U+2029 inside a line, a lone CR, async callbacks awaited in order, a missing file, and an empty file.loadDailyUsageDatacounts an entry whose text contains U+2028.buffer.constants.MAX_STRING_LENGTH(a usage entry, then filler lines, then another entry) is run throughgetEarliestTimestamp, loadDailyUsageData, loadSessionData, loadSessionBlockDataandloadSessionUsageById. Onmain, the four loaders throwRangeError: Invalid string lengthandgetEarliestTimestampreturnsnull. With this change all five pass. This block writes a temporary ~537 MB file and adds about 6 s to the test run.session --idworks on the 780 MB session. That session's usage in the report matches an independent count of the file (505,174 output tokens).--jsonoutput of all five commands with 1.8.0. Token counts and prompt counts are identical, and costs match up to floating-point rounding (relative difference ≤ 1e-15). The one exception is explained in the notes below.split('\n').dailywent from 29.6 s to 26.3 s andsessionfrom 22.3 s to 18.7 s.Notes
Unrelated nondeterminism. In the
sessioncomparison, two pairs of sessions swap a few deduplicated entries. This also happens between two runs of 1.8.0 itself. Both files in each pair have the same earliest timestamp, sosortFilesByTimestamp()leaves their order to glob order, and whichever file is read first keeps the shared entries. It isn't caused by this PR; I can open a separate issue if useful.calculateContextTokens()still usesreadFile. It reads the transcript from the end on the statusline hot path, and streaming it forward would mean parsing every line on every statusline refresh. With a transcript over 512 MB it returnsnull(the statusline shows no context usage); it doesn't crash. Reading only the tail of the file could be a follow-up.Other whole-file reads are left as they are to keep this PR focused:
debug.ts(detectMismatches(), only used with--debug) has no error handling around the read, sodaily --debugcan still crash on an oversized transcript._live-monitor.tsand_statusline-loader.tsread throughPromise.allSettled, anddevin-adapter.ts/pi-adapter.tscatch per-file errors, so an oversized file there is skipped rather than crashing.Happy to follow up on any of these.
