Description

This PR:

  • Fixes a couple of thousand ts errors in UI test files by various fixs like pulling in the correct vitest types
  • Makes test TS config not pull in entire clerk-js TS by using a small local shim
  • Main one: Separates src and test TS-configs. A root config with empty files/include now points the src and test ones out as references instead, meaning they rely on each other, but act as separate projects

Compared to Electron, UI is a larger package, so keeping configs separate here makes more sense and merging them is harder.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The UI package now uses separate source and test TypeScript projects. The source project emits declarations and excludes tests. The test project references the source project and includes global declarations. Test shims, Vitest types, fixtures, ESLint resolution, build scripts, tsdown, and Turbo inputs were updated.

Estimated code review effort: 3 (Moderate) | ~20 minutes

Suggested reviewers: alexcarpenter

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 14697

UI tests that pass valid Clerk.load configuration may still fail typechecking because the local shim rejects those options. This should be corrected or explicitly accepted before merging.

Inline comments:
In `@packages/ui/package.json`:
- Line 107: Update the type-check script to avoid combining --noEmit with the
composite tsconfig.src.json configuration; use a compatible composite build
command or a separate non-composite checking configuration while preserving
type-checking behavior.
- Line 107: Update the type-check script in package.json to run the
project-reference build via tsconfig.json, ensuring both source and test
projects are type-checked instead of only tsconfig.src.json.

In `@packages/ui/src/test/core-shims/clerk.ts`:
- Line 3: Update the Clerk shim’s load method to accept the same optional
load-options parameter used by repository callers and explicitly return
Promise<void>, while preserving its no-op behavior.

In `@packages/ui/tsconfig.mosaic.json`:
- Line 4: Update the configuration represented by tsconfig.mosaic.json to avoid
the inherited tsBuildInfoFile conflict: either retain composite support with
incremental enabled, or remove the inherited build-info setting while preserving
the intended non-composite behavior. Ensure the effective configuration is
accepted by TypeScript 6.0.3 when loaded by tsdown.

In `@packages/ui/turbo.json`:
- Around line 14-15: Add tsdown.config.mts to the build task’s explicit inputs
in turbo.json, or include $TURBO_DEFAULT$, so changes to the configuration
invalidate cached outputs while preserving the existing tsconfig inputs.

🔴 Breaking Changes (1)

Changed: Ui
// ... 3 unchanged lines elided ...
    version?: string;
    __appearanceType?: A;
  }, 'ClerkUI'>;

Static analyzer: Breaking change in type alias Ui: Type changed: import("@clerk/ui").~Tagged<{__brand:typeof import("@clerk/ui").UI_BRAND;ClerkUI?:import("@clerk/shared").ClerkUIConstr… → import("@clerk/ui").~Tagged<{__brand:typeof import("@clerk/ui").UI_BRAND;ClerkUI?:!unknown;version?:string;__appearance…

🤖 AI review (confirmed) (70%): The ClerkUI? field in Ui changed its referenced type from ClerkUIConstructor (imported from @clerk/shared) to unknown; if @clerk/shared's export is non-resolvable (e.g. a blocked/chunk specifier), the old reference degraded to any, but the analyzer flagged this as a reference resolution change and the after-type unknown is structurally different from a named constructor type for consumers who read or assign the field.

Migration: Update any code that accessed ClerkUI as a typed ClerkUIConstructor to treat it as unknown and add appropriate runtime type guards.

🟡 Non-breaking Changes (3)

Modified: ComponentControls
// ... 24 unchanged lines elided ...
    prefetch: (component: 'organizationSwitcher') => void;
    mountImpersonationFab: () => void;

Static analyzer: Breaking change in type alias ComponentControls: Type changed: {mountComponent:(params:{appearanceKey:!Uncapitalize:type<import("@clerk/ui").~AppearanceCascade['appearanceKey']>;name… → {mountComponent:(params:{appearanceKey:!Uncapitalize:type<import("@clerk/ui").~AppearanceCascade['appearanceKey']>;name…

🤖 AI review (reclassified as non-breaking) (80%): The before and after snippets for ComponentControls are textually identical; the rule-based analyzer flagged a change but the provided snippets show no structural difference between the two versions.

Modified: ElementsConfig

🤖 AI review (reclassified as non-breaking) (80%): The before and after snippets for ElementsConfig are textually identical; the rule-based analyzer flagged a change but the provided snippets show no structural difference between the two versions.

Modified: WithInternalRouting

Static analyzer: Breaking change in type alias WithInternalRouting: Type changed: (!Omit:type<T,'path'|'routing'>&{path:string|undefined;routing?:!Extract:type<import("@clerk/shared").RoutingStrategy,'… → (!Omit:type<T,'path'|'routing'>&{path:string|undefined;routing?:!Extract:type<!unknown,'path'>;})|(!Omit:type<T,'path'|…

🤖 AI review (reclassified as non-breaking) (80%): The before and after snippets for WithInternalRouting are textually identical; despite the rule-based description mentioning !unknown, both rendered snippets show the same Extract<RoutingStrategy, ...> structure with no structural difference.

Subpath ./entry

🟡 Non-breaking Changes (1)

Modified: ClerkUI.ensureMounted
  ensureMounted(opts?: {
      preloadHint?: string;
    }): Promise<ComponentControls>;

Static analyzer: Breaking change in method ClerkUI.ensureMounted: Return type changed: !Promise:interface<import("@clerk/shared").ComponentControls> → !Promise:interface<!unknown>

🤖 AI review (reclassified as non-breaking) (90%): The before and after snippets are textually identical (Promise<ComponentControls> in both), so no consumer-visible signature change occurred; the rule-based analyzer's internal resolution of the return type changed but the public API surface is unchanged.

Subpath ./themes/experimental

🟡 Non-breaking Changes (1)

Modified: createTheme
// ... 9 unchanged lines elided ...
    captcha?: import("@clerk/ui/internal").CaptchaAppearanceOptions | undefined;
    cssLayerName?: string | undefined;
  }

Static analyzer: Breaking change in function createTheme: Return type changed: {__type:"prebuilt_appearance";name?:string;elements?:((params:{theme:import("@clerk/ui").~InternalTheme;})=>import("@clerk/ui").~Elements)|import("@clerk/ui").~Elements;theme?:(import("@clerk/ui").~BaseTheme|import("@clerk/ui").~BaseTheme[])|undefined;options?:import("@clerk/ui").~Options|undefined;variables?:import("@clerk/ui").~Variables|undefined;captcha?:import("@clerk/ui").~CaptchaAppearanceOptions|undefined;cssLayerName?:string|undefined;} → {__type:"prebuilt_appearance";name?:string;elements?:!unknown|((params:{theme:import("@clerk/ui").~InternalTheme;})=>!unknown);theme?:(!unknown|!unknown[])|undefined;options?:import("@clerk/ui/internal").Options|undefined;variables?:import("@clerk/ui/internal").Variables|undefined;captcha?:import("@clerk/ui/internal").CaptchaAppearanceOptions|undefined;cssLayerName?:string|undefined;}

🤖 AI review (reclassified as non-breaking) (95%): The before and after snippets are structurally identical — both resolve to the same return type with the same fields (Elements, InternalTheme, BaseTheme, Options, Variables, CaptchaAppearanceOptions from @clerk/ui/internal); the ~ vs !unknown notation in the compact description is an artifact of the rule-based analyzer's type resolution, not an actual API surface difference.
