Description

Follow-up to #10545. Fixes two problems when UserProfileModalReturn removes __clerk_mosaic_modal from the URL.

  • Next.js App Router: with no Suspense boundary above MosaicProvider, the cleanup ran before Next patched history.replaceState. __NA was lost, useSearchParams kept the removed param, and going back reloaded the page. The check, cleanup and open() now run in a microtask, after every effect in that commit. Seen in a scratch Next 16.4.3 app that ran the same timing without Mosaic. Not tried on Next 15: the scratch app failed to build there.
  • History state: array, Date or Map state was flattened into a plain object. State without __NA is now left untouched.

Walkthrough

The modal return effect now performs URL checks and matching modal-return work in a queued microtask. The history-state helper leaves states without the Next.js __NA marker unchanged and preserves array shape when it removes that marker. Feature tests check parent history.replaceState patches and array-valued history state. A patch changeset documents the update.

Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

Cancel the queued work on unmount.

If the provider unmounts after this effect runs but before the microtask executes, the callback still removes the parameter and calls open on the unmounted modal host. A later provider cannot reopen the modal because the parameter is gone. Invalidate the callback in the effect cleanup. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

As per coding guidelines: “Implement proper cleanup in useEffect.”

Cancel the queued modal-return task during effect cleanup.

If UserProfileModalReturn unmounts before the microtask runs, the callback still calls window.history.replaceState and open({ page: 'account' }). This can update the URL and request a modal after MosaicProvider has unmounted. Add a cancellation flag and return cleanup from React.useEffect. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

As per path instructions, this is a concurrency and lifecycle issue.
