Problem

color.ts and log.ts add ANSI escape codes to every styled line. An agent that runs a command without --json gets those codes in stderr. Raised on #520 (run.ts:276).

Fix

writeln() and blank() in lib/log.ts pass stderr output through plain(). Outside human mode, or when NO_COLOR is set, plain() removes SGR codes (\x1b[…m). That covers color.ts, backtick highlighting, tagged loggers and the gutter bar for every command. Human output stays the same.

  • plain() removes only SGR, because that is all our styling emits. A general ANSI strip such as Bun.stripANSI reads C1 bytes in user data (U+0090, U+009B, U+009D) as escape starts and drops the rest of the message.
  • stdout (log.data()) passes through untouched, so JSON and raw API bodies arrive byte for byte. The stdout callers that add color (unlink, init/scan.ts) wrap their lines in plain() themselves.
  • colorDisabled() moves from gradient.ts to color.ts, so log.ts can use it without an import cycle.

log.raw() and log.ui() keep their own paths: raw() carries no styling, and ui() writes cursor control only on a TTY.

Tests

  • log.test.ts:
    • in agent mode, info, warn, tagged and gutter lines capture as plain text, and human mode keeps its codes
    • NO_COLOR gives human mode plain text
    • agent-mode log.data() keeps a JSON payload with \x10\x90\x9b\x9d byte for byte
    • agent-mode log.warn() keeps text after a C1 byte or a lone ESC
  • doctor/index.test.ts: doctor in agent mode without --json writes no \x1b to stderr.

The new tests fail against the old log.ts.

Follow-up

After this merges, the migrate stack drops the printTarget special case from #518.

📝 Walkthrough

The logger preserves styled text in human mode and removes SGR color sequences in other modes. It sanitizes stderr messages before capture, throttling, and output, and sanitizes the gutter prefix in blank. Stdout data remains unchanged. Init scan and unlink messages pass through plain. Tests cover mode-specific output and a failing environment-variable check in doctor(). A changeset documents the output behavior and color controls.

color.ts and log.ts style every line for a terminal, so agents running a
command without --json got raw escape codes in stderr. writeln() and
blank() now strip them outside human mode.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Bun.stripANSI read C1 bytes in user data (U+0090, U+009B, U+009D) as
escape starts and dropped the rest of the output, breaking JSON on
stdout and truncating stderr messages. Strip only SGR codes, which is
all color.ts, highlight(), formatTag() and the gutter emit, and only on
stderr. The few stdout callers that add color now pass through plain().

plain() also honors NO_COLOR, so humans who set it get uncolored status
lines. colorDisabled() moves to color.ts so log.ts can use it without
an import cycle through gradient.ts.

The log tests inherited both, so a developer's own NO_COLOR failed three
of them, and FORCE_COLOR overrides NO_COLOR in colorDisabled. The shared
hooks now clear them and put them back.

🟡 Minor · Strip colon-parameter SGR sequences in plain(). · log.ts:142-152

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Strip colon-parameter SGR sequences in plain().

The current pattern matches only semicolon-form SGR parameters. Valid colon-parameter sequences such as ESC[38:2::1:2:3m can remain in non-human stderr output through the exported Logger methods. Extend the shared pattern to accept : while preserving the existing C1-byte and lone-ESC behavior.

Suggested fix
-const SGR = new RegExp(String.raw`\x1b\[[0-9;]*m`, "g");
+const SGR = new RegExp(String.raw`\x1b\[[0-9:;]*m`, "g");

A truecolor or underline-style SGR can separate its parameters with `:`
(ESC[38:2::255:0:0m), which the pattern missed, so it reached agent and
NO_COLOR output. The pattern still matches SGR only, so user text with C1
bytes or a lone ESC is kept.

@coderabbitai Re the outside-diff comment on log.ts:142-152 (strip colon-parameter SGR sequences in plain()): fixed in b0d31ac, with your pattern, \x1b\[[0-9:;]*m. It still matches SGR only, so the C1-byte and lone-ESC test keeps passing. A new test checks that ESC[38:2::255:0:0m and ESC[4:3m are stripped in agent mode. It fails without the change.

@royanger Thanks. I verified that plain() uses \x1b\[[0-9:;]*m and that the new test covers both colon-parameter SGR sequences. The C1-byte and lone-ESC preservation test remains in place. This addresses the finding. I did not run the tests.
