Fixes #2242.

Problem

A choice's Which day setting leaked to every later step in the same run. In the issue's macro, a script sets yesterday and tomorrow, then two nested Templates each use one of them for {{DATE}}. Both Templates got yesterday's day, so only one file was created. Repeated quickAddApi.executeChoice() calls showed the same leak.

Root cause

ChoiceExecutor.clocks.date held one day for the whole outermost run. planDateOrigin reads an already-set clocks.date as "inherit". So the first choice that resolved a day, or the first executeChoice(..., { date }), fixed the day for every step after it.

Fix

The day now belongs to the choice that sets it and to whatever that choice runs.

  • Each nested execute() restores the enclosing choice's clocks when it ends. A Macro's own Which day still reaches all its children, and an enclosing day still takes precedence over a child's own setting, as before.
  • executeChoice restores the caller's clocks and pick-a-day flag after its call. options.date (including "ask") applies to that call only.
  • Shift-selecting a choice in a Multi picker sets the pick-a-day flag for that run only. Before, later macro steps inherited the picked day. With only the clocks fix, they would have asked for a date again. Both review models raised this case independently.

clocks.now stays frozen for the whole run, so {{TIME}} is unchanged.

Behavior changes

  • In a Macro without its own day, two children set to Ask each time now each ask. Before, the second silently reused the first answer: one date prompt before, two after, measured with the executor unit harness. To ask once for every child, set the Macro's Which day to Ask each time, which the Macro docs already describe.
  • executeChoice no longer leaves options.date or "ask" set on the caller's executor after it returns. quickAddApi.test.ts asserted the leaked flag, and now asserts the flag during the call and its reset afterwards.

Not changed, and older than this PR: inside a Macro that has its own day, executeChoice(name, {}, { date: "ask" }) does not ask, because the enclosing day wins.

Verification

  • tests/e2e/date-origin-scope.test.ts drives the issue's steps in real Obsidian, and the executeChoice variants too. Before the fix, 3 of 5 tests failed with expected null to be '2026-01-04', meaning the second file was never created. After the fix, 5 of 5 pass.
  • Run by hand on the built plugin, the issue's exact macro creates 2026-10-15.md and 2026-10-17.md, each containing its own date. That holds for both the command and quickadd:run, with dev:errors empty.
  • src/choiceExecutor.dateScope.test.ts covers nested Templates, the Macro's own day, repeated executeChoice with options.date and with variables, and a failing executeChoice. Three of its four tests fail on master. The fourth, Macro day inheritance, guards against over-scoping and passes on both.
  • Full native E2E suite: 460 passed, 24 skipped. pnpm run lint, pnpm run build, and pnpm run test (6897 passed) are green.
  • The Shift-select path has unit coverage only (choiceSuggester.test.ts). It was not driven in Obsidian.

Commits: the failing tests land first, then the fix.

Release and migration

Patch-level fix:. There is no settings or data migration. See Behavior changes for the "Ask each time" difference.

Note

Scope choice dates to the run that sets them in ChoiceExecutor and QuickAddApi

  • Fixes a bug where a nested choice's date stayed active after the choice finished, affecting later steps in the same macro.
  • ChoiceExecutor.beginExecutionContext/endExecutionContext now capture and restore the enclosing run clocks; nested calls restore them while the outermost call still clears them (choiceExecutor.ts).
  • QuickAddApi.executeChoice snapshots executor clocks and pickDate before applying date options, and restores both in a finally block (quickAddApi.ts).
  • ChoiceSuggester.onChooseItem enables pickDate only for Shift-click selections and restores the prior value afterward (choiceSuggester.ts).
  • Adds unit tests (choiceExecutor.dateScope.test.ts) and end-to-end tests (date-origin-scope.test.ts) covering variable-based dates, explicit dates, macro inheritance, and isolation.
  • Behavioral Change: an executeChoice options.date no longer becomes the date for later macro steps; each step now uses its own date or the enclosing macro's.

Macroscope summarized 890a61e.

Note

Medium Risk
Changes core execution date state for macros, nested runs, and executeChoice, with intentional behavior shifts for repeated date prompts; well covered by new unit and E2E tests.

Overview
Fixes Which day leaking across macro steps and API calls by scoping clocks.date and pickDate to the choice (or executeChoice invocation) that sets them.

ChoiceExecutor now saves the enclosing run clocks in beginExecutionContext and restores them in endExecutionContext when a nested execute() finishes, so a macro’s own day still applies to its children but does not stick around for later steps. QuickAddApi.executeChoice snapshots and restores clocks and pickDate in a finally block so options.date (including "ask") applies only to that call. Shift-click in the choice picker sets pick-a-day for the selected run only, then restores the previous flag.

Adds choiceExecutor.dateScope.test.ts and tests/e2e/date-origin-scope.test.ts, and updates API/suggester tests for the new scoping. Behavior change: sibling templates set to Ask each time in a macro without its own day each prompt separately instead of reusing the first answer.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Date settings from nested choices and quick-add executions are now limited to their own runs, preventing them from changing the surrounding choice’s date context.
    • Shift-based date picking is restored to its previous setting after a choice completes, whether it succeeds or fails.
    • Nested templates and repeated executions now use the appropriate configured or inherited dates.

Two nested Templates with different variable days, and repeated
executeChoice calls with different days, all get the first day the run
resolved. These specs fail until the day is scoped to its choice.

Refs #2242
A choice's resolved day was stored for the whole outermost run, and a
set day reads as inherited. So the first nested Template that picked a
day, or the first executeChoice options.date, became the day of every
later step in the run. Each nested execution now restores its
enclosing choice's clocks when it ends. executeChoice restores the
caller's clocks and pick-a-day flag after its call, and a Shift-picked
choice in a Multi picker restores the flag after its run. A Macro's own
day still reaches every choice it runs.

📝 Walkthrough

Choice execution now restores enclosing date state after nested runs. API calls and Shift-triggered choices also restore executor state after execution. Added unit and end-to-end tests cover nested date origins, independent API calls, and state restoration after failures.

Changes: Date Context Scoping

Layer / File(s) Summary
Nested execution clock restoration
src/choiceExecutor.ts, src/choiceExecutor.dateScope.test.ts, tests/e2e/date-origin-scope.test.ts
Nested execution restores the enclosing clocks. Unit and end-to-end tests cover nested Templates with their own variable dates and inherited macro dates.
API choice date context
src/quickAddApi.ts, src/quickAddApi.test.ts, src/choiceExecutor.dateScope.test.ts, tests/e2e/date-origin-scope.test.ts
executeChoice restores saved clocks and pickDate after execution. Tests check independent date inputs and state restoration after a rejected call.
Shift-triggered choice date picking
src/gui/suggesters/choiceSuggester.ts, src/gui/suggesters/choiceSuggester.test.ts
A Shift-triggered choice temporarily enables date picking and restores the prior value after execution settles. Tests cover both initial pickDate values.

The date-scoping fix works for sequential runs. Scripts that call executeChoice concurrently can still leave a stale date that a later step inherits, so owners should be aware of this or serialize such calls.

PASS

Independent shipping verification of head 890a61e against parent f6e4bd6 in a detached verifier worktree, using real vault files and Obsidian 1.13.7 on headless Linux.

  • Lane 1, issue repro. Parent created only 2026-10-15.md containing 2026-10-15. Head created 2026-10-15.md and 2026-10-17.md, each containing its own date.
  • Lane 2, executeChoice with options.date. Parent and head both created 2026-01-02.md and 2026-01-04.md, each containing its own date. This form already worked on the parent.
  • Lane 2, executeChoice with variables. Parent created only 2026-01-02.md containing 2026-01-02. Head created 2026-01-02.md and 2026-01-04.md, each containing its own date.
  • Lane 3, Macro day inheritance. Parent and head both created first/2026-10-15.md and second/2026-10-15.md, both containing 2026-10-15. The Macro used relative -1 days.
  • Lane 4, Shift-select in a nested Multi. A native CDP Shift-click opened the real date dialog. I entered 2026-02-11 and clicked Ok. Parent created first/2026-02-11.md and second/2026-02-11.md, both containing the picked date. Head created first/2026-02-11.md containing 2026-02-11 and second/2026-10-17.md containing 2026-10-17. Both macros completed. Each run opened exactly one date prompt and left no modal open.

Every lane on both builds reported No errors captured. from dev:errors. Before/after file reads, tabs, workspace IDs, and console captures are saved with the evidence.

I read and reused the cancelled verifier's parent evidence for lanes 1 through 3. I rebuilt the parent and ran lane 4 myself. I rebuilt head and ran every head lane myself through registered choice commands. The parent bugs in lane 1 and lane 2 with variables are confirmed by the reused evidence.

env -u DISPLAY .agents/run-e2e tests/e2e/date-origin-scope.test.ts --reporter=verbose passed all five tests on head, with no skipped tests.

  • PASS. gives each nested Template its own variable day
  • PASS. gives each executeChoice call its own options.date
  • PASS. still hands a Macro's own day to its nested Templates
  • PASS. gives each executeChoice call its own variable day
  • PASS. keeps an executeChoice options.date out of later macro steps

Both builds succeeded. The isolated Obsidian instance is stopped. The verifier worktree is detached at 890a61e with an empty git status --porcelain.

New evidence and rerunnable verification scripts are in /data/home/tmp/qa2242/ship-verify-notes/r2/. Reused parent evidence is in its parent directory.
