Summary

  • Use the shared release-asset collector, signature reporter and serialized snapshot updater with repository parameters in .github/release-assets.json.
  • Preserve signed Maven outputs before classifier fat-JAR assembly; obtain expected classifier assets from configuration.
  • Check completeness/signatures, preserve snapshot metadata after partial uploads, and reject stale snapshot updates.
  • Track shared scripts/tests/workflow blocks with checksums; disable persisted checkout credentials in release-upload jobs.
  • Add the repository-specific CodeRabbit reviews badge supplied by the maintainer.

Validation already performed

  • Buildcheck suite: 103 tests pass.
  • Shared-file checksums and workflow validation pass.
  • README change inspected: one repository-specific badge line.
  • GitHub CI on the PR head.

Cross-repository scope

Companion changes are on refactor/shared-release-checks in workspace, java-llama.cpp, BitcoinAddressFinder, and streambuffer. The canonical shared-script contract and credential policy are documented in the workspace change. No release or deployment is requested.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Release Improvements
    • Release downloads now include configured fat JAR variants for supported platforms and technologies.
    • Artifact collection reports missing or empty files and detached signatures while preserving available artifacts when collection is incomplete.
    • Snapshot releases advance and remove outdated assets only after collection is complete and signed; versioned releases retain their assets.
  • New Features
    • CLI packages now include third-party license information for included dependencies.
  • Documentation
    • Updated release guidance and added dependency license review and third-party notices.

Review in Change Stack →

Walkthrough

The change adds configured release-asset collection, detached-signature checks, and snapshot publication tools. It updates snapshot and versioned-release workflows, adds dependency-license collection and packaging, and adds a README badge.

Changes: Release asset collection and publishing

Layer / File(s) Summary
Configure and collect release assets
.github/release-assets.json, .github/release-assets.json.license, .github/buildcheck/releaseassets.py, .github/collect-release-assets.py, .github/report-asset-signatures.py, .github/buildcheck/tests/test_releaseassets.py
A schema-1 manifest defines fat-jar rules. The collector discovers Maven projects, validates configuration and paths, stages assets and signatures, and reports signature gaps. The CLI supports collection and classifier listing. Tests cover collection, configuration, signatures, and CLI behavior.
Publish and maintain snapshot releases
.github/buildcheck/snapshot.py, .github/update-snapshot.py, .github/buildcheck/tests/test_snapshot.py
The snapshot publisher validates assets and run metadata, checks publication order, and uploads available files. It updates release metadata and prunes obsolete assets only when the collection is complete.
Wire asset collection into publish workflows
.github/workflows/publish.yml, .github/shared-files.sha256, CLAUDE.md
Snapshot and release jobs use shared scripts to stage and collect assets and report signature gaps. Snapshot runs are serialized, and the collection result is passed to the snapshot publisher. The shared-file hashes and workflow documentation are updated.

Third-party license collection and packaging

Layer / File(s) Summary
Collect and document dependency licenses
.github/collect-third-party-licenses.py, .fossa.yml, THIRD_PARTY.md, docs/dependency-license-review.md, .github/shared-files.sha256
The collector copies recognized legal files from runtime JARs and writes a hash-based inventory. New configuration and documentation describe license review and release checks.
Package legal files in Maven artifacts
srcmorph-cli/pom.xml, srcmorph-maven-plugin/pom.xml, srcmorph/pom.xml
The CLI build runs the dependency-license collector during packaging. The three Maven artifacts include project resources and legal files.

Merge Risk: Moderate · up to 2f915

Resolve incomplete snapshot publication before merging: a partial run can leave a visible incomplete release or replace assets while its metadata remains unchanged. The legal-file omission, badge destination, and test gap also need correction.

Security architecture risk: Low · up to 2f915

The change adds useful completeness and stale-run protections without a demonstrated new privilege-escalation path. Publication remains non-atomic, and deployed permissions and coordination with companion repositories were not verified.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • observed — The publication code can create or move the repository's rolling snapshot tag, change release metadata, replace assets, and delete obsolete snapshot assets. Its explicit repository argument comes from the workflow environment. Legal collection writes build resources consumed by the CLI artifact rather than addressing a remote service.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Dependency-controlled archive names are sanitized for per-JAR directories. Archive entry validation rejects absolute paths, parent traversal, backslashes, and colon-bearing components. Selected bytes are copied as resources, not executed by the collector; output symlinks and existing unmarked output directories are rejected.
  • observed — Publication still requires the existing ref gates and explicit publish-to-Central input, with producer jobs using the maven-central environment. Ordinary pull-request execution does not satisfy those publication gates. The new attachment-job checkouts disable credential persistence, while snapshot mutation receives its token in the publication step.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — For an existing release, incomplete collection and upload failure stop later metadata promotion and pruning. Cleanup reads all asset pages before deletion and continues after individual deletion failures. These controls improve failure containment but do not restore overwritten assets or make the overall publication atomic.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — If consumers require an intact last-complete snapshot during failures, consider separating candidate uploads from the published asset set and defining explicit bootstrap and interrupted-promotion recovery. This would strengthen the continuing non-atomic publication model, not remediate a newly established attacker path.

Keep the ordinary signature valid in the orphan subtest.

The first subtest leaves new.json.asc empty. The orphan subtest can then pass because the ordinary signature remains invalid. It does not test whether publish() rejects a nonempty orphan signature.

Do not overwrite published assets from an incomplete collection.

gh release upload ... --clobber runs before the if not complete: gate. It sends every file in assets_dir. For each file whose name already exists on the release, the upload replaces the published asset. The gate then raises, but the replacement has already happened. The tag and release notes are not updated before the gate, so they still describe the previous snapshot. The asset set does not stay unchanged.

This can pair new bytes with an old signature. If a partial run uploads X.jar without X.jar.asc, the new X.jar replaces the old one. The old X.jar.asc remains, because pruning runs after the gate. The error message "existing snapshot metadata and assets were retained" is also false for these names.

Upload only the files whose names are not yet published when the collection is incomplete:

The link parameter creates an anchor inside the SVG, but the README embeds that SVG as a bare image. GitHub does not make that internal SVG anchor clickable. Changing only the parameter is not sufficient.

🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Reject an incomplete first publish before creating the snapshot release.

When no snapshot release exists and complete is false, the function creates the tag and release before it raises. This leaves incomplete assets attached to a persistent snapshot release. A later complete run can repair it, but the incomplete snapshot remains visible until then.

Reject only when not complete and not release. Keep the existing-release path unchanged so partial uploads continue to work.

Before the `if not release` block that creates the tag and release, reject when
`complete` is false and `release` is absent. Leave the existing-release path
unchanged so incomplete collections can still upload to an existing snapshot
release.

Include copyright files in the legal-file selector.

If a runtime JAR contains META-INF/COPYRIGHT, legal_file() returns false. The collector then omits the file from the packaged output and inventory.json. Add copyright to the recognized filenames so the package preserves the files that THIRD_PARTY.md tells maintainers to retain.
