Feature Summary:

Replaces YouTube's native 2x press-and-hold boost gesture with a horizontal drag gesture for variable playback speed
control.

How it Works

  • Gesture: Left-click and drag horizontally across the player surface to temporarily adjust playback speed in discrete
    configurable segments (default 0.25x per 10px).
  • Bidirectional: Dragging right increases speed; dragging left decreases speed back towards the origin.
  • Release: Releasing the mouse button restores original playback speed.

Testing

  1. Verified horizontal dragging boosts and lowers speed in real-time with OSD feedback.
  2. Verified standard video play/pause clicks and right-click context menus work normally.
  3. Reset of playback speed to original speed after mouse release
feature_speed_boost.mp4

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Adjust playback speed by dragging horizontally across the player. The speed changes with the drag distance and returns to its starting value when the gesture ends.
    • Configure the gesture and its speed increment in settings. It is off by default.

Then back to where the start was loosed.

@aniTech-addict Sorry I got busy with personal stuff, overall this is a solid contribution. The generation counter design for cancelling stale speed writes was a nice touch. Below is everything worth addressing, ordered by priority. all line refs in src/features/playbackSpeedBoostGesture/index.ts unless noted.

Maybe support for shorts could be added but for now it seems good

Bugs

  1. preventNextClick can get stuck on — index.ts:133. It's only reset when the click lands inside the player, but there are paths where that click never happens: drag ends outside the player, window loses focus mid-drag (the blur listener at index.ts:39), or the feature gets disabled mid-drag (index.ts:127 removes the click listener and then calls handleMouseUp, so nothing is left to clear the flag). In all three cases the next normal click on the video gets swallowed. Fix is to reset the flag before the target check:
function stopGestureClick(event: MouseEvent) {
	if (!preventNextClick) return;
	preventNextClick = false;
	if (!getPlayerTarget(event)) return;
	event.preventDefault();
	event.stopImmediatePropagation();
}
  1. Normal clicks queue a pointless speed write — index.ts:111. handleMouseUp always queues the revert, even when hasMoved is false — so every click-to-pause on the player runs a full setPlayerSpeed round-trip (awaits getVideoData, writes the same rate back). setPlayerSpeed also calls noteUserInput(), which touches the manual-override timestamps Forced Playback Speed relies on. Just guard it:
if (!hasMoved) {
	preventNextClick = false;
	return;
}
preventNextClick = true;
queueSpeedUpdate(initialSpeed, gestureGeneration);
  1. Edge case, low priority: if you press again while the revert from the previous drag is still sitting in speedUpdateQueue (each queued write awaits a getVideoData() round-trip, so a fast drag can leave a few pending), the gestureGeneration++ at index.ts:60 invalidates the revert and it silently never runs. The next gesture then reads the still-boosted video.playbackRate at index.ts:59 as its baseline, so from then on it reverts to the boosted speed instead of the original. Only reachable when the queue is backed up, so not a blocker — if you want to close it, keep a pendingRevertSpeed when queuing the revert and use that as the baseline in handleMouseDown when it's still pending.

Confirm with maintainers

  1. Reverting to initialSpeed on mouseup (index.ts:111) makes this a temporary hold-to-boost, same as the YouTube gesture it replaces. Pretty sure that's the intent given the i18n title, but the README's "horizontal dragging to adjust playback speed" reads like the speed should stick after release. Worth a quick confirmation. If temporary is right, maybe flash the OSD once on the revert so the snap-back isn't invisible.

Worth considering

  1. The suppression at index.ts:57 is broader than it needs to be. getPlayerTarget at index.ts:45 only excludes .ytp-chrome-bottom and .ytp-ce-element, so mousedown gets killed on the settings menu, title bar, pause overlay etc. Most of YouTube's UI acts on click so it survives, but things like "click outside closes the settings menu" may break — menu stays open while a boost drag starts on the video underneath. Might be worth excluding the menu/chrome classes too.

  2. showOSD at index.ts:93 gets called every 10px of drag, and each call constructs a whole OnScreenDisplayManager — fresh canvas plus forced layout reads in its setupCanvas. Fast drags will do this dozens of times a second. The DOM canvas does get reused so it's not fatal, but throttling the OSD updates would keep fast drags smooth. (playbackSpeedButtons and scrollWheelSpeedControl also call it per step — you'd just be the first at mousemove frequency.)

@aniTech-addict The testing code is very near completion, once that's done I'll have you go over this and implement tests. I still need to merge it to dev once all is good. Last run 869 passed / 2 failed / 5 flaky / 3 skipped (1.2h) of 879 tests

  1. I did notice it after a while, but wasn't sure about what was causing this behavior.
    thankyou for pointing out the exact cause, i'll fix it

Normal clicks queue a pointless speed write — index.ts:111.

  1. possible fix
  • Update handleMouseUp so the existing cleanup and generation invalidation always run.
  • Only call queueSpeedUpdate(initialSpeed, ...) when hasMoved is true.
  • Preserve preventNextClick behavior for drag gestures and leave ordinary click-to-pause behavior unchanged.
  1. Understood, if you dont mind could u also explain how were u able to detect the edge case bcz i dont think i would have been able to (i m still a newbie)

  2. Yes, the feature is supposed to be a Temporary Hold-to-boost feature, the reason for disabling the native YT gesture was to avoid conflict.

maybe flash the OSD once on the revert so the snap-back isn't invisible.

Will Do

mousedown gets killed on the settings menu, title bar, pause overlay etc.

I'll look into it, would take some time as i aint sure about how i should tackle these for now.

I just think the actual locale text may be a bit confusing, maybe a reference to the adjustment being temporary is needed

I'll update the locale string to make it clear that it's temporary
Maybe changing it something like:
"Hold to temporarily boost playback speed" or "Hold/Drag for temporary playback speed boost")

  1. No worries, it's one of those bugs that's easy to spot in code but hard to hit in real use, since it needs a pretty unusual click sequence. When you fix it, you might also want to reset preventNextClick at the top of handleMouseDown. Belt and suspenders, even if some future path leaks the flag again, the next press clears it before anything else runs.

  2. That's exactly right, cleanup and the generation bump always run, only the revert write is gated on hasMoved. One small thing: set preventNextClick = false in the !hasMoved branch instead of leaving it alone, so a plain click can never leave the flag set and the function's intent is clear at a glance.

  3. Sure, happy to walk through it. Two timelines are running at once: your event handlers are synchronous, but anything queued through queueSpeedUpdate runs later on the promise chain. The generation guard inside the .then is the giveaway, it's there because you already expected queued work to go stale. So the question is just: what can bump the generation between enqueue and execution? Only handleMouseDown and handleMouseUp. Write the interleaving out:

  • drag ends, mouseup: generation goes to N+1, revert enqueued with N+1
  • before the revert's .then runs, a new mousedown arrives: generation goes to N+2
  • the revert's .then finally runs: N+1 ≠ N+2, silently dropped
  • the new gesture reads video.playbackRate as its baseline, still the boosted value, because the revert never applied

The general habit: whenever you see a "still current?" check inside an async continuation, assume it'll fail sometimes, then ask who can invalidate it and what state is left behind when it does. Most cancellation and race bugs live exactly in that gap between "enqueued" and "executed."

  1. Good, that clears things up, thanks for confirming. For the OSD flash on revert you don't need any new plumbing: just reuse the same showOSD call from handleMouseMove, fired from handleMouseUp with the reverted value.

  2. No rush on this one, it's a "worth considering," not a blocker. If it helps, you don't need to catalogue every overlay up front. Extend the exclusion selector in getPlayerTarget with the classes you can confidently identify (the settings/popup surface and the title/chrome-top area are the main ones), test that clicking the video still closes an open menu, and iterate from there. Shipping without it and following up later is a perfectly fine call too.

Thanks for the detailed review and guidance.
Refencing 3rd point, this methodology was something that I did learn in theory in college and now I am actually able to learn the practical implementation of it. 😃

…storation speed and improved event management
… and enhance OSD management for video elements
…tizing target selection for shorts and fallback elements
Clear the pending trailing-click suppression when any subsequent click
lands outside the player surface, such as the timestamp container or
player controls. This prevents the next legitimate click on the video
from being incorrectly blocked after interacting with timestamp markers.
