fix(theme): keep one session store for the selected theme - #278
Conversation
xos_opal_ThemeFactory remembered a theme chosen with ?xoops_theme_select= under its own session key and read that key before anything else. The kernel's theme selector and login store the choice in $_SESSION['xoopsUserTheme'], so after one GET selection every later choice made in the theme selector block was overridden on the next page. The factory now reads and writes $_SESSION['xoopsUserTheme'] as well. The folder resolution moves into resolveFolderName() so it can be covered by unit tests without bootstrapping a theme.

**Remembered themes are lost**
When a returning session has its selected theme only under the pre-upgrade factory key, `resolveFolderName()` checks only `xoopsUserTheme` and falls back to `defaultTheme`, so returning users lose their remembered selection after upgrade.
When `xoopsUserTheme` is absent, read and validate the legacy factory `defaultTheme` session value before falling back to the configured default.

**Selector choice is overridden by stale URL**
When a user selects a theme from the block while viewing a URL containing `?xoops_theme_select=alpha`, the theme block submits the current URL as its redirect target, including any `xoops_theme_select` query parameter. After the kernel stores the selector’s POST choice and redirects back, `resolveFolderName()` reads that old GET value first and replaces the stored choice, so the user sees the URL-selected theme again.
Remove `xoops_theme_select` from the selector’s return URL, or otherwise ensure the POST choice takes precedence on the redirected request.

**Concurrent theme choices are lost**
When two requests for the same session select different themes concurrently, a page request selecting alpha and a selector request selecting beta can both read the same session snapshot. The custom session handler writes the entire serialized session without locking, so whichever request saves last overwrites the other choice; later pages can show the losing theme. Add per-session locking or conflict-safe updates for the shared theme value.
Serialize session reads and writes with a per-session lock, or merge theme updates without overwriting newer session state.

The change to one shared $_SESSION['xoopsUserTheme'] is the right direction. Extracting resolveFolderName() keeps the old precedence, and the final else is equivalent to the old elseif. Two follow-ups are needed before merge, plus a few notes.
1. The selector choice is still lost while the page URL carries ?xoops_theme_select= (P2)
- The selector block's
onchangepostsxoops_theme_redirect = location.pathname + location.search + location.hash(modules/system/blocks/system_blocks.php). XoopsKernel::themeSelect()stores the POSTedbetaand 303-redirects back to/index.php?xoops_theme_select=alpha.- On that GET,
resolveFolderName()applies GETalphaand writes it back to the session.
This is the original bug again, reached through the redirect. selectorChoiceAfterAGetSelectionIsNotOverridden misses it because it clears $_GET. The no-JS path is not affected: the stock form posts with an empty redirect field.
Suggested fix: strip the parameter once, in getThemeRedirectUrl(), after the same-site validation. Leave the other pairs and the fragment as they are. Key matching has to follow PHP's request-name normalisation, so it also catches xoops.theme.select, xoops+theme+select, percent-encoded and [] forms:
protected function getThemeRedirectUrl(): string
{
$url = $this->validateThemeRedirectUrl(
\Xmf\Request::getString('xoops_theme_redirect', '', 'POST'),
XOOPS_URL
);
// The page URL may still carry ?xoops_theme_select=; on the redirected
// GET it would override the theme just chosen in the selector.
$parts = explode('#', $url, 2);
$pq = explode('?', $parts[0], 2);
if (isset($pq[1])) {
$kept = array_filter(explode('&', $pq[1]), static function (string $pair): bool {
$key = strtr(urldecode(explode('=', $pair, 2)[0]), ' .', '__');
return preg_replace('/\[.*\z/s', '', $key) !== 'xoops_theme_select';
});
$parts[0] = $pq[0] . ($kept === [] ? '' : '?' . implode('&', $kept));
}
return implode('#', $parts);
}The fix needs a kernel test: /x.php?a=1&xoops_theme_select=alpha#top → /x.php?a=1#top, /x.php?xoops.theme.select=alpha → /x.php, and /x.php?a=1 unchanged. parse_str/http_build_query would rewrite unrelated parameters, so they are avoided on purpose.
2. The admin redirect_header() now renders the user's theme with default asset URLs (P2)
In include/functions.php, redirect_header() sets $theme = 'default' when XOOPS_CPFUNC_LOADED is defined. It passes that only as $xoopsThemeFactory->defaultTheme, then assigns xoops_theme / xoops_imageurl / xoops_themecss for default. The factory now reads $_SESSION['xoopsUserTheme'] before defaultTheme, and login and the selector fill that key for every user with a non-default theme. The admin redirect page therefore renders that user's theme with default template variables. Before this PR, only a GET-selected theme could do that.
Fix: name the folder explicitly on that path:
$xoTheme = $xoopsThemeFactory->createInstance([
'folderName' => $theme,
'plugins' => [],
'renderBanner' => false,
]);On the front end $theme is already theme_set, which themeSelect() has set from the session, so passing it there too changes nothing.
Notes (no change needed for this PR)
- Checking theme files before saving to the session: old
theme.php,themeSelect()and login all save after a name/allow-list check only. Adding a disk check in just one of the three writers would make them disagree. If it is wanted, it belongs in a follow-up that covers all of them. - Remembered themes lost after upgrade / concurrent requests: the first loses only a GET choice in a session open during the upgrade, once. The second is the normal last-write-wins behaviour of whole-session writes. Neither is a blocker.
allowUserSelection = false: the flag guards only the session write. GET/POST and the session theme still apply, and the session key is now filled by login. No core caller disables it. A docblock line, or a follow-up, would make that explicit.- Nit: the
createInstance()comment still says "skipping the empty()-branch" and "bypass resolveFolderName()". Every call now goes throughresolveFolderName(), which tests=== ''. Reword it as "callers that passfolderNameor setdefaultThemedirectly".

Why
After a theme was chosen once with
?xoops_theme_select=in a URL, the theme selector block stopped working: every theme picked in the selector was replaced by the URL-chosen one on the next page.xos_opal_ThemeFactory::createInstance()remembered the GET choice under its own session key ($_SESSION['xos_opal_ThemeFactory']['defaultTheme']) and read that key before the configured theme. The kernel's selector (POST) and login store the user's theme in$_SESSION['xoopsUserTheme'], so the two stores disagreed and the factory's copy always won.What
class/theme.php: the factory reads and writes$_SESSION['xoopsUserTheme'], the same key the kernel selector and login use, so there is one store.createInstance()intoprotected resolveFolderName(array $options): array, with unchanged order (explicit folderName, POST, GET, remembered theme, default) and unchanged validation. This makes it testable without bootstrapping a theme.tests/unit/htdocs/class/XoopsThemeFactoryTest.php: 13 tests covering every branch: explicit folder name (including"0"), POST over GET, GET remembered in the shared key, a selector choice after a GET selection (the regression), disallowed and invalid names, stale and poisoned session values, no selection,allowUserSelection = false, no session, empty allowed list.docs/changelog.270.txt: entry under a new 2.7.5 NOT RELEASED section (2.7.4 is tagged).Verification
phpunit --filter XoopsThemeFactoryTest: 13 tests, 21 assertions, green.resolveFolderName(), 4 tests fail (includingselectorChoiceAfterAGetSelectionIsNotOverridden); with the fix, all pass.LanguageManagerSmokeTest, which fail identically onmasterwithout this change.Checklist
