fix(smarty): drop mb_regex_encoding()/mb_split() from smarty_mb_str_replace() - #273
Conversation
…eplace() PHP 8.6 deprecates the mb_ereg family (the bundled oniguruma library is no longer maintained), so every |replace and |escape modifier call logged "Function mb_regex_encoding() is deprecated" three times per invocation. The single-string branch now uses str_replace(), which is byte-exact and safe for UTF-8 and any ASCII-superset charset. This matches Smarty 5, which removed the helper in favour of str_replace(). Smarty 4.5.8 is the end of the 4.x line, so the committed vendor copy carries the patch.

🟡 Minor · Preserve character boundaries for non-UTF-8 Smarty charsets. · shared.mb_str_replace.php:47-50
htdocs/xoops_lib/vendor/smarty/smarty/libs/plugins/shared.mb_str_replace.php:47-50
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick winPreserve character boundaries for non-UTF-8 Smarty charsets.
When
Smarty::$_CHARSETisEUC-JP,|replacereaches this scalar branch throughsmarty_modifier_replace(). The newstr_replace()compares raw bytes. A search sequence can therefore span two EUC-JP characters and produce incorrect output and match counts. Keep the charset conversion in this helper, or use an equivalent character-aware implementation that does not use the deprecated regex functions.Suggested fix
- // str_replace() is byte-exact and safe for UTF-8 and any ASCII-superset charset. - $subject = str_replace($search, $replace, $subject ?? '', $count); + $charset = Smarty::$_CHARSET; + if ($charset !== 'UTF-8') { + $search = mb_convert_encoding($search, 'UTF-8', $charset); + $replace = mb_convert_encoding($replace, 'UTF-8', $charset); + $subject = mb_convert_encoding($subject ?? '', 'UTF-8', $charset); + } + $subject = str_replace($search, $replace, $subject ?? '', $count); + if ($charset !== 'UTF-8') { + $subject = mb_convert_encoding($subject, $charset, 'UTF-8'); + }🤖 Prompt for AI Agents

…ty_mb_str_replace() str_replace() is only character-safe on UTF-8, which is self-synchronizing. For any other Smarty charset (EUC-JP, GB2312, ...) the subject, search and replacement are converted to UTF-8 first and the result converted back, as the original mb_regex_encoding() code did, so a search can never match across a character boundary. Also correct the changelog: Smarty 5.8.5 still ships the mb_split() version of this helper; the functions are deprecated in PHP 8.6 and scheduled for removal in PHP 9.0.

Addressed the outside-diff finding in 115a6fa: the scalar branch converts subject, search and replacement to UTF-8 when Smarty::$_CHARSET is not UTF-8, runs str_replace(), and converts back, matching what the original code did via mb_regex_encoding(). Verified with EUC-JP: replacing 本 in 日本語テキスト gives 日X語テキスト (count 1), and a 2-byte search straddling 日 and 本 leaves the subject unchanged (count 0), where a raw byte str_replace() matched it. @coderabbitai review |

PHP 8.6 deprecates the
mb_eregfamily because the bundled oniguruma library is no longer maintained; removal is scheduled for PHP 9.0. Every|replaceand|escapemodifier call went throughsmarty_mb_str_replace()and logged three deprecations per invocation:The single-string branch now uses
str_replace(). On UTF-8, which is self-synchronizing, a byte match is always a character match. For any other Smarty charset the subject, search and replacement are converted to UTF-8 first and the result converted back, as the original code did throughmb_regex_encoding(), so a search can never span a character boundary in EUC-JP, GB2312 or similar. The array-search and array-subject branches are unchanged.Smarty 4.5.8 is the end of the 4.x line and Smarty 5.8.5 still ships the
