Addresses part A of #187, reported by @toomingos. The issue stays open for its separate default-content and DOM-write work.

Move custom tooltip target state into a tooltip-owned component and retain its chart child between target updates. Parent prop changes still update the host. This avoids repeated adapter updates without an external store, new dependency, type assertion, or public API change.

Verification:

  • The new ordinary and Strict Mode regressions pass. Both fail against current main with three adapter updates during three target changes.
  • Existing React lifecycle tests pass, including custom body composition and pinned dismissal.
  • pnpm validate passes all 19 targets (run), including 2,251 DOM tests across 290 files. Generated previews preserve all 188 SVGs.
  • Chromium, Firefox and WebKit pass all three wrappers with client mounting and hydration, 18 cases covering target values, pinning, dismissal, parent changes, disable/enable, surface identity and teardown.
  • Retained installed tarballs pass the same 18 lifecycle cases on each of React 18.0.0, 18.3.1 and 19.2.3, 54 cases total. The bundle resolves 116 packed Charts inputs with no workspace sources. Host render counts are measured only in source instrumentation, not the packed check.
  • All 146 existing production consumer bundles are byte-identical and their limits pass. Those cases exclude the custom React bridge. A separate all-exports tooltip entry adds 0.052 minified / 0.007 gzip decimal kB and decreases Brotli by 0.023 kB. No budgets or benchmark records change.

The scene already avoided redraws before this fix. The removed work is the React host render and adapter update, not an asserted scene-render speedup.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Custom tooltip target changes, including keyboard navigation, now update tooltip content without rerendering the chart.
    • Parent prop changes continue to update the chart and tooltip. Tooltip content is removed when disabled and returns when re-enabled.

📝 Walkthrough

The React chart wrappers now use a shared TooltipBody component. Tooltip target changes update the tooltip body without updating the chart host, while parent prop changes still update the chart.

Changes: React tooltip state isolation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Shared tooltip state handling
packages/react-charts/src/tooltip.tsx
Chart, RendererChart, and CanvasChart use TooltipBody to provide tooltip target updates and render custom tooltip content. The chart child is memoized, and tooltip content renders only when a renderer and target are present.
Tooltip tests and supporting records
packages/react-charts/src/tooltip.test.tsx, .changeset/react-tooltip-state.md, API-FRICTION.md, benchmarks/conformance/previews/manifest.json
Tests cover keyboard target changes, parent prop updates, tooltip body removal and restoration, and cleanup in both Strict Mode configurations. The changeset, follow-up note, and manifest hash are updated.

The tooltip change itself looks sound. The new test imports act from react, which may not work on some older React 18 versions, but this affects only the test setup and not shipped behavior.
