The Main restart dialog asked staff for a "Backup for this restart" text that nothing checked: any three characters passed, and the text was only stored on the job.

What changes

  • Helper (host.py): a small AMP API client acts as the TFWeb service account. The website sends the login (SERVER_CONTROL_AMP_USERNAME / SERVER_CONTROL_AMP_PASSWORD in its .env) with every control request except status; the helper keeps it in memory only and never writes it to its state files. With a login, console commands go through Core/SendConsoleMessage, and a Main countdown starts an AMP backup (Before restart <id>) when accepted. At the end of the countdown the helper waits up to 20 minutes for AMP to finish ("Finishing a backup before the restart."); a failed or overdue backup calls the restart off before maintenance. Dev restarts and Main's emergency override take no backup. Expired sessions log in again once; a connection failure makes the next call look the instance up again.
  • No login: behaviour is as before: console through the sudo wrapper, no backup.
  • Socket: backup_ref is no longer required (older sites that still send it are accepted); plans carry backup: bool; requests may carry amp: {username, password}.
  • Site: the text box is gone. The dialog says a fresh backup is taken during the countdown, that the emergency option skips it, or that this site has no AMP login set, with the last AMP backup time. The countdown card shows "AMP backup running" / "done".

No root step: the earlier /etc/tfmc-server-control/amp-login.json design was dropped because the host administrator can't run anything. #235 (files through AMP) was closed for the same reason.

Rollout

  1. Merge; once main's Build passes, ssh tf-hetzner sudo -n /usr/local/sbin/tfmc-server-control-update <sha> (helper modules only; ryan can run it). Dev's site deploys itself and stops sending backup_ref, so run the updater promptly.
  2. Add the two SERVER_CONTROL_AMP_* lines to www's .env, then deploy www via Actions (it restarts the backend).

Tested against the live AMP API from the host earlier (status, backup list, Dev list, session expiry); a Dev TakeBackup took 4 min 40 s for 20 GB without stopping Paper.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Main-server restarts can now take a fresh backup automatically during the countdown, with progress shown in the restart status. The restart waits for the backup to finish.
    • Emergency and development restarts skip the automatic backup.
    • Console commands can use AMP when credentials are available.
  • Bug Fixes

    • If a backup fails or takes longer than 20 minutes, the restart is called off before maintenance begins.
    • AMP sessions are refreshed after expiry, and connection or action failures are reported.

The change adds AMP authentication and console support, and creates automatic backups for eligible main-server countdown restarts. The admin API and interface no longer require staff to provide a backup reference. They expose and display backup availability and progress.

Changes: Server restart backup flow

Layer / File(s) Summary
AMP client and console access
backend/src/servers/host.py, backend/src/servers/test_control.py
Adds AMP authentication, instance discovery, session retry and console-command support. Console commands continue to use the sudo wrapper when AMP is unavailable.
Main-server countdown backup lifecycle
backend/src/servers/host.py, backend/src/api/admin_routes.py, backend/src/servers/test_control.py
Creates and awaits an AMP backup for eligible main-server countdown restarts. Records the completed backup and handles cancellation and backup failures. The dispatch path accepts a legacy backup_ref field but does not pass it to the start operation.
Admin backup status and request contract
frontend/lib/admin/serverControl.ts, frontend/app/components/admin/ServerControls.tsx, frontend/app/components/admin/ServerControls.test.tsx
Removes backup_ref from the start request. Adds plan and job backup status, displays backup availability and progress, and updates the admin control tests.

If an AMP instance changes ports, server-control operations can keep failing until the helper or its credentials are refreshed. Correct that recovery path before merging; also restore the previous backup time in the Main restart dialog.

The restart dialog asked staff to type a backup reference that nothing
checked. With an AMP login file the helper now asks AMP for a backup as
Main's countdown starts and waits for it before maintenance; a failed
backup calls the restart off. Console commands go through the AMP API
too. Without the file the helper keeps the sudo wrapper and takes no
backup. The dialog explains which applies instead of asking for text.

…file

The host administrator can't create /etc/tfmc-server-control/amp-login.json,
so the website sends SERVER_CONTROL_AMP_USERNAME/PASSWORD from its .env
with every request except status. The helper keeps the login in memory
only, never in its state files, and falls back to the sudo wrapper when
none has arrived.

Sol's review of #234:
- A login now only counts for the server its request is for (which the
socket already allows), so the Dev site can't replace the client a Main
restart uses; an accepted job keeps the client it started with, and
status requests can't carry a login.
- A cancel during the backup wait is no longer overwritten as failed.
- The site sends an empty backup_ref again so the helper on the host keeps
accepting starts until it is updated.
- The normal Main dialog shows the last AMP backup time too.

Sol's second review of #234 (no blockers):
- A restart drops its pinned login when its worker ends or its start
fails, so reopening uses the fresh login from its own request.
- The cancel check, the cancelled broadcast and the failure now happen
under one lock, so a cancel can't turn into failed.
