Players found the detector too easy: the bar points the way and the source is collected automatically within 20 blocks. Each character's source is now a cache buried in the ground that only they can see, which they dig up and open by hand. Sources also sit further out.

How it plays

  • The cache is buried 3–6 blocks deep (source.burial), 300–600 blocks from the character.
  • While the hunter holds a live detector within 32 blocks of it, their client is sent a chest at the cache block. The server keeps the real ground block, so other players see stone or dirt and cannot open it.
  • Within detection.pinpoint-range (12 blocks, measured in 3D) the bar is retitled "dig close by", and the bar and clicks restart from low and peak on the cache. This shows where to dig.
  • Clicking the chest spends the detector and opens an "Arcane Cache" chest window with the reward. Anything still in the window when it closes, or when the server stops, goes to the player.
  • Drop limits work as before. A limited player's click gives the limit message and leaves the cache where it is.

Placement

  • A cache is placed only where its block and all six neighbours are natural ground (stone, dirt, sand, ores, terracotta and so on). It never shows in a cave and never lands in or under a build. The column is kept one block inside its chunk so these checks stay in the chunk that is already loaded. Tree trunks are followed down to the soil.
  • If another plugin refuses a dig within 3 blocks of the cache (a WorldGuard region or a SimpleFactions installation), the cache is moved somewhere else and the hunter is told.

Upgrade

  • Config v7 changes source.min-distance/max-distance from 150/500 to 300/600 when they are still at the old defaults, and removes detection.collection-distance.
  • Surface sources in sources.yml from earlier versions are dropped on load, and their hunters get a buried cache on their next hold.
  • New messages: player.signal-bar-close, player.cache-title, player.cache-protected. admin.source-located and admin.move-success gain %y% and give block coordinates. Both servers have customised messages.yml, so those two lines need editing by hand.

mvn clean verify passes: 151 tests, 100% line, branch and instruction coverage. These still need an in-game check: the client-side chest, opening it with either click, and the window.

The source is now a cache buried 3-6 blocks deep in natural ground,
300-600 blocks from the character. While holding a live detector within
32 blocks, the hunter's client is sent a chest at the cache block; the
server keeps the real ground, so nobody else sees or opens it. Within
detection.pinpoint-range (12 blocks, in 3D) the bar retitles and the bar
and clicks show closeness to the cache alone, to find where to dig.
Clicking the chest spends the detector and opens a chest window with the
reward; anything left in it goes to the player on close.

Caches are only placed where the block and all six neighbours are natural
ground, so they never show in caves or sit under builds. A dig next to
the cache that another plugin refuses moves the cache elsewhere.

Config v7 raises the old 150/500 default ring to 300/600 and drops
detection.collection-distance. Surface sources saved before this are
dropped on load, so their hunters get a buried cache on the next hold.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added individually visible, buried caches that remain in the world until dug up. A live detector reveals a cache to its hunter, with closer readings as they approach.
    • Opening a cache drains the counter and presents its reward in a cache window.
    • Added configurable burial depth and pinpoint range.
  • Changes
    • Source placement now defaults to 300–600 blocks away, increased from 150–500.
    • Locate and placement messages now show the cache’s block coordinates, including height.
  • Documentation
    • Updated the README with cache visibility, digging guidance and in-game testing notes.

The PR changes sources into naturally sealed buried caches, reveals each cache to its hunter through a client-side chest, and adds close-range detector readings. Opening a cache consumes the source and presents its weighted reward in an inventory. Configuration, persistence, commands, messages and tests are updated for this flow.

Changes: Buried cache flow

Layer / File(s) Summary
Burial and detection configuration
src/main/java/net/tfminecraft/geigercounters/config/*, src/main/resources/config.yml, src/test/java/net/tfminecraft/geigercounters/config/*
Configuration version 7 adds burial-depth and pinpoint-range settings, changes source-distance defaults and migrates older configurations. Tests cover migration and configuration values.
Buried placement and persistence
src/main/java/net/tfminecraft/geigercounters/validators/SpawnLocationFilter.java, src/main/java/net/tfminecraft/geigercounters/handlers/SourceHandler.java, src/test/java/net/tfminecraft/geigercounters/validators/SpawnLocationFilterTest.java, src/test/java/net/tfminecraft/geigercounters/handlers/SourceHandlerTest.java
Placement checks natural-ground burial and spawn filters, adjusts cache locations, and retries when no sealed candidate is available. Saved sources carry a buried marker, and loading skips entries without it.
Cache reveal and close-range readings
src/main/java/net/tfminecraft/geigercounters/handlers/BuriedChest.java, src/main/java/net/tfminecraft/geigercounters/handlers/GeigerClickPlayer.java, src/main/java/net/tfminecraft/geigercounters/handlers/SignalBar.java, src/main/java/net/tfminecraft/geigercounters/managers/GeigerManager.java, src/test/java/net/tfminecraft/geigercounters/handlers/*Test.java, src/test/java/net/tfminecraft/geigercounters/managers/GeigerManagerTest.java
The manager tracks hunters with revealed caches and updates pinpoint feedback. The chest listener sends and restores player-specific displays. Tests cover reveal, display, close-range readings and lifecycle handling.
Cache opening and reward delivery
src/main/java/net/tfminecraft/geigercounters/handlers/CacheMenu.java, src/main/java/net/tfminecraft/geigercounters/handlers/BuriedChest.java, src/main/java/net/tfminecraft/geigercounters/handlers/SourceHandler.java, src/main/java/net/tfminecraft/geigercounters/managers/GeigerManager.java, src/test/java/net/tfminecraft/geigercounters/handlers/CacheMenuTest.java, src/test/java/net/tfminecraft/geigercounters/handlers/SourceHandlerTest.java, src/test/java/net/tfminecraft/geigercounters/managers/GeigerManagerTest.java
Displayed-cache interactions route through the manager to source opening. Collection sends the selected reward to a cache menu. The menu returns contents on close or shutdown and handles them on death.

Locate and move responses report cache block coordinates, including Y. README and messages describe the cache flow and close-range digging guidance.

Repeated refused digs can move a cache more than once. Clear its displayed state when relocation starts; the remaining risk is bounded.

Comment @coderabbitai help to get the list of available commands.

- Every block of cover from the cache up to the ground must be natural,
so a cache never sits under a floor or path; snow layers, moss carpet,
cacti and similar are skipped like trunks when finding the ground.
- Running out of attempts falls back only to a sealed candidate; with
none, the hunter waits a minute rather than getting an exposed cache.
- A refused dig anywhere in the cache's column, up to the surface over a
  deep cache, now moves it.
- Dying with the cache window open adds its contents to the death drops
(or keeps them with keepInventory), and a window another plugin
refuses hands the reward over at once.

- Dying with the cache window open now puts its contents in the
inventory, which RPCharacters graves snapshot before clearing the
drops, and in the drops for a plain death; what does not fit falls
  where the player died.
- A click opens the cache only when the chest clicked is the character's
current cache, and a cache moved off protected ground hides its old
  chest at once.

Paper's default drops are the inventory's own stacks, so cache loot
merged into a stack also grew that stack's drop before the fitted amount
was added again.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Merging into inventory stacks the drops share grew those drops, and
replacing the drop entries with copies lost Paper's own drop handling.
Loot now only fills empty storage slots, a copy is added to the drops
for a plain death, and loot with no free slot falls where the player died.
