Keep unsent letters safe through death, logout and storage failures - #37
Conversation
Letters returned during a death that empties the inventory now drop at the player's feet, using that death's keepInventory choice. Players who log out or are online at shutdown keep the letter if there is room; otherwise it is queued for the outgoing character. Queued returns are marked as returned and arrive with their own message instead of "a letter for <account name>". A failed send while the character is still played hands the letter straight back; only letters for characters no longer played are held in memory, and the log now names the item. Book edits without a character say why they were dropped. Pending mail drains save once per drain, takePending/hasPending are gone, and the three session checks share SendSession.isCurrent. A letter taken from the pending queue was lost if handing it over threw. It now goes back to the head of its queue. Delivery notices run after the hand-over and can no longer throw, so a restored letter was never given. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Addressed; CodeRabbit confirmed or accepted the reply in the thread, and all checks pass.
Review follow-up to #36 (v1.2.0). An unsent letter returned during a death went into an inventory that Paper empties straight afterwards: RPCharacters' permadeath ends the session inside PlayerDeathEvent, and an ordinary death closes the recipient picker before the inventory is cleared. Returned letters that waited in pending mail also arrived as "a letter for ", failed returns lived only in memory with a log line that did not name the letter, and a book edit made without a character was dropped silently.
BirdMessenger now records each death at LOWEST and, when that death empties the inventory (its keepInventory choice, or the gamerule if no event was seen), drops the returned letter at the player's feet. On logout, a QUIT/SHUTDOWN session end or plugin shutdown, the letter goes into the inventory if it fits and is otherwise queued for the outgoing character. Queued returns carry
returned: trueand arrive with the newunsent-returnedmessage. A failed send while the character is still played hands the letter straight back; only letters for characters no longer in play are held in memory, and both log lines name the item type, amount, display name, character and owner. Book edits and signatures without a character send the newletter-needs-charactermessage; the edit still has to be cancelled, because letting it through would let ItemsAdder turn the letter into a plain book. A pending-mail drain now saves once at the end, still taking one letter at a time and checking the character before each.takePendingandhasPendingare gone, and the three "is this session current" checks now shareSendSession.isCurrent.Verified with
mvn clean verify: 214 tests pass (202 before) and the 100% line coverage gate holds. New tests cover the permadeath and picker-close death paths, keepInventory from the event and the gamerule, logout with a full inventory, immediate hand-back after a failed send, the returned-letter message, and the batched drain save, including a failed hand-over.Docs: TF-Minecraft/Docs#173
