Description

Closes #5970 -- second part. Aligns the objects list to standard with other engines. Fixes shared test.

  • Fabric treats the default warehouse as None so we skip reconnects. get_data_objects therefore returned catalog=None. Other engines return a real warehouse name.
  • Cache still uses schema.table (super().get_data_objects()). The warehouse name is filled in on the returned objects only.
  • Catalog name on the object -> catalog from the requested schema if present, otherwise current target / connected warehouse / configured default.

Also fixes a bug. A lazy restore to None would still have the connection to the last connection (planning). So any list of objects after that with no catalog would actually return objects for planning rather than the default catalog.

Test plan

  • test_get_data_objects on Fabric (query + df)
  • Unit: that list twice with safe_to_cache=True is one fetch
  • Unit: after a lazy restore to None, get_data_objects("dbo") is labeled planning correctly, not the default warehouse. get_data_objects("ci_abc.dbo") is still labeled ci_abc.
  • Unit: drop of a ci_abc object — two-part SQL, execute-time catalog is ci_abc (no reconnect if already default; switch and restore if on planning)

Checklist

  • I have run make style and fixed any issues
  • I have added tests for my changes (if applicable)
  • All existing tests pass (make fast-test)
  • My commits are signed off (git commit -s) per the DCO

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved catalog reporting for Fabric connections, including when no explicit catalog is selected or the connection remains on another warehouse.
    • Catalog restoration now more reliably preserves the active connection state when switching between catalogs.
    • Data object listings show the appropriate catalog, including for objects in the configured default warehouse.
    • Dropping objects in the default catalog now handles connections on other warehouses more reliably.

Thanks for picking up the Fabric CI failure in #5970. I went through the change.

The new get_data_objects path looks like it covers the list test. That test already passes a schema that includes the warehouse name, and the new code copies that name onto each listed object:

def get_data_objects(
self,
schema_name: t.Union[str, exp.Table],
object_names: t.Optional[t.Set[str]] = None,
safe_to_cache: bool = False,
) -> t.List[DataObject]:
# Fabric uses None as "default catalog" so we skip reconnects. Other engines
# return a real warehouse name here.
# Cache on schema.table due to @set_catalog stripping the catalog. Then put a
# warehouse name on the returned objects so listing matches other engines.
objects = super().get_data_objects(schema_name, object_names, safe_to_cache)
catalog = to_schema(schema_name).catalog or self._resolved_catalog()
if not catalog:
return objects
return [
DataObject(
catalog=obj.catalog or catalog,
schema=obj.schema_name,
name=obj.name,
type=obj.type,
clustering_key=obj.clustering_key,
)
for obj in objects

The other failure in the issue looks like it is still there. This is existing behavior on main, not something this PR introduces. test_catalog_operations asks for the current catalog and lowercases it before it lists anything:

current_catalog = ctx.engine_adapter.get_current_catalog().lower()
ctx.engine_adapter.set_current_catalog(catalog_name)
assert ctx.engine_adapter.get_current_catalog().lower() == catalog_name
ctx.engine_adapter.set_current_catalog(current_catalog)
assert ctx.engine_adapter.get_current_catalog().lower() == current_catalog

On the default warehouse for fabric, get_current_catalog() still returns None:

def get_current_catalog(self) -> t.Optional[str]:
"""Return the explicit Fabric catalog target for the current thread."""
return self._normalize_catalog(self._target_catalog)

_normalize_catalog turns an empty value, and the default warehouse name, into None:

def _normalize_catalog(self, catalog_name: t.Optional[str]) -> t.Optional[str]:
if not catalog_name:
return None
default_catalog = self._default_catalog or self._extra_config.get("database")
if default_catalog and catalog_name == default_catalog:
return None

None has no .lower(), so that test crashes. This PR does not change get_current_catalog(), and the unit test still expects None:

def test_get_current_catalog_uses_only_explicit_target_catalog(
make_mocked_engine_adapter: t.Callable,
):
adapter = make_mocked_engine_adapter(
FabricEngineAdapter,
database="default_catalog",
)
assert adapter.get_current_catalog() is None

So #5970 is only partly addressed. The reconnect logic can keep the empty value internally, so Fabric can still skip a reconnect. get_current_catalog() needs to return the configured warehouse name when we are on the default catalog. Then the shared test has a name it can lowercase.

@nicksspirit -- this has been updated -- good call out on the catalog still being None. This should align the normal output of the fabric adapter to the adapter interface while still keep the fabric shenanigans operational under the hood.

Walkthrough

Fabric’s public current catalog now reports the configured default warehouse while its internal catalog target can remain unset. Catalog restoration uses the internal target, and data-object listing normalizes and restores default-warehouse catalog labels.

Changes: Fabric catalog behavior

Layer / File(s) Summary
Default catalog state and restoration
sqlmesh/core/engine_adapter/base.py, sqlmesh/core/engine_adapter/fabric.py, sqlmesh/core/engine_adapter/shared.py, tests/core/engine_adapter/test_fabric.py
The adapter uses an internal catalog getter during restoration and reports the configured default warehouse as the current catalog when no explicit target exists. Tests cover catalog restoration and default-catalog operations, including dropping an object.
Default-catalog object listing
sqlmesh/core/engine_adapter/fabric.py, tests/core/engine_adapter/test_fabric.py
The adapter removes the configured default warehouse from object catalogs before caching results, then restores catalog labels after cache reads. Tests cover default and explicit catalog listings and cache fetch counts.

Priority: Normal

Estimated code review effort: 3 (Moderate) | ~20 minutes

Change: Bug fix · Severity of issue fixed: Medium

Suggested reviewers: erindru, fresioas

Merge Risk: Moderate · up to 6186a

Fabric object listings can return an incorrect object result when the same cache entry is reused across warehouses. Separate those cache entries before merging.

Security architecture risk: Low · up to 6186a

Cached objects can receive a warehouse label that does not reflect where they were fetched. The underlying cache ambiguity already existed, and the review did not establish a newly reachable unauthorized database operation. The remaining risk concerns warehouse identity and downstream trust in metadata.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · architecture · inferred: The new catalog-label contract is not backed by warehouse provenance in the cache. After caching ci_abc.dbo.t, switching to planning, and lazily restoring the logical target to None, an unqualified cached lookup for dbo.t can return the ci_abc object labeled planning. The neutral-key collision predates this PR; the newly introduced behavior is asserting a concrete warehouse identity for an object fetched elsewhere. This weakens the metadata identity contract consumed by database-operation code, although an additional unauthorized operation was not established.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated identity confusion is scoped to warehouse contexts sharing an adapter cache and colliding schema/object names. It requires cached metadata and catalog-state reuse; it does not establish access to warehouses beyond the adapter’s existing connection authority.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — The source supports a newly false warehouse label, not a verified new authorization bypass. The underlying cache collision already affected object presence and type decisions before this PR. In the inspected same-connection type-mismatch DROP sequence, the new label names the warehouse that the old unqualified operation already used; an additional attacker-controlled destructive path was not established.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — An explicit default-warehouse request still checks the physical connected catalog and reconnects when necessary. Restoring None intentionally changes only the logical target. This protects normal explicit routing but does not establish the provenance of a cache hit.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Preserve canonical physical-warehouse provenance in cache identity, including cached absence results, rather than reconstructing it from the reading connection. Validate that identity across warehouse switches, lazy restoration, and interrupted operations.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #5970 (direct) has two coding objectives.

  1. [#5970] Treat an existing Fabric warehouse (HTTP 409, ItemDisplayNameAlreadyInUse) as a no-op in create_warehouse. The commit cc8d8b0 ("fix(fabric): no-op warehouse create when the name already exists (#6041)") appears in head history below this PR's three commits. The PR diff of sqlmesh/core/engine_adapter/fabric.py does not touch create_warehouse. So this behavior is already present at the merge base and at head. Limit: the create_warehouse body was not read directly, because the file output was truncated at 16000 bytes. The conclusion rests on the commit history and the absence of any change to that code in this PR.

  2. [#5970] Make the default warehouse name visible to callers. The PR changes get_current_catalog() to return the explicit target or the configured default (_default_catalog or extra_config database), while the internal None sentinel stays in _target_catalog for reconnect logic. get_data_objects() now labels returned objects with the requested schema catalog, otherwise the resolved catalog. _get_data_objects() blanks the default warehouse before the base cache write, so the cache key stays schema.table. _resolved_catalog() handles the lazy-restore case, where the open connection is on a non-default warehouse. The base and shared set_catalog restore path uses _get_current_catalog_for_set_catalog() to avoid an unnecessary reconnect. test_fabric.py adds unit coverage for normalization, restoration, caching, labels, and drop behavior. The integration tests named in the issue (test_catalog_operations, test_get_data_objects) were not run in this review. The PR test plan reports them as passing on Fabric.

Both objectives are implemented at head. The PR text says "second part" of #5970, which matches this split.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

All changed code maps to #5970 objective 2 or to its supporting tests:

  • fabric.py: get_current_catalog(), _get_current_catalog_for_set_catalog(), set_current_catalog() comparison, _resolved_catalog(), _get_data_objects() and get_data_objects() catalog handling. These implement the default-warehouse labeling and the lazy-restore fix described in the PR.
  • fabric.py: _drop_catalog() uses get_current_catalog() in its in-use check. This follows from the changed return value of get_current_catalog().
  • base.py: new _get_current_catalog_for_set_catalog() hook, with a default that returns get_current_catalog(). It exists so Fabric can override the restore value. Other engines keep their behavior.
  • shared.py: set_catalog restore reads the hook instead of get_current_catalog(). This is required by the Fabric override.
  • tests/core/engine_adapter/test_fabric.py: tests for the changed behavior.
  • Minor edits in fabric.py: the to_schema and DataObject imports and removal of one blank line. These support the new code.
    No change was found that lacks a connection to the linked issue or the PR objectives.

Namespace Fabric’s data-object cache by the effective warehouse.

When the logical target is neutral but _connected_catalog is planning, an unqualified cacheable listing can query planning. The inherited @set_catalog wrapper strips ci_abc from ci_abc.dbo before the base cache lookup, so both calls use dbo.<object>. Fabric relabels the cached result after that lookup. A cached object or cached miss from one warehouse can therefore report incorrect presence or catalog metadata for the other warehouse.

Use the effective warehouse in the Fabric cache namespace. Do not let an unqualified listing on a non-default connection read or write the neutral default-warehouse entry.

@cmgoffena13 CodeRabbit's cache comment looks right. dbo and ci_abc.dbo share the key dbo.<table>, so a listing while the connection is still on planning can come back labeled as ci_abc. The key needs the warehouse that was actually queried.
