…ion compatibility (#98) ## Summary We upgrade the status.json contract to schema **2.1** and land the full producer/consumer story for it in one branch. This supersedes #96: its producer code (build_variant / therock_commit emission) is folded in here so the schema bump, the fields that justify it, and the compatibility guards ship atomically. ## What changed **Schema (2.0 -> 2.1)** - Bump `schema_version` to `2.1` and document the two new optional fields in `status_json_reference.jsonc`, README, and tutorial. **Producer (from #96)** - `StatusDocument` gains `build_variant` and `therock_commit`, stamped only from the orchestrator's setup run. `build_variant` comes from dispatch inputs (default `"release"`); `therock_commit` is the 40-hex TheRock commit the release was built from, validated in `derive_therock_commit`. Both default to `""` and are written only when non-empty; a newer owner resets them. **Consumer version guards** - The producer's migration already rejects a *newer minor* (a write-back would silently downgrade). The read-only consumer does the mirror: it accepts any newer minor within the supported major (additive, non-breaking) and gates only on the **major**. - `load_status` now calls `_check_schema_version` and raises `UnsupportedSchemaError` (a `ValueError` subclass) when the major does not match `SUPPORTED_SCHEMA_MAJOR = 2`. The example consumer catches it *before* the transient clause and exits non-zero: a major bump is permanent, so the consumer must be updated rather than retried. ## Testing - Full suite green except the 3 pre-existing `therock_workflow_registry_test.py` failures (they diff external TheRock workflow files; unrelated to this change). - New `SchemaMajorGateTest` exercises the real `load_status` gate on temp files (accept current/newer minor, reject newer/older major, reject missing version). - pre-commit (black, mypy, mdformat, ...) passes on all touched files. ## Note Closes #96 (its producer changes are included here). Fixes the atomic-merge concern tracked in #97.
