Problem

A PostHog AI turn in Slack can finish with an empty reply: the reader gets an @-mention, a footer, and thumbs to rate, but no answer.

  • A tool call moves the turn's prose into a 💭 plan step, so a turn ending on a tool call has no final answer left to stream.
  • The reply was closed out anyway. The thumbs were gated on the footer existing, never on the reply carrying an answer.
  • The same empty reply follows an idle timeout, a parent cancel, and a rejected final append.

Changes

A reply with no answer now says so, and carries no thumbs.

I finished without an answer. Ask again in this thread and I'll try again.

  • The relay reports whether prose reached the reply. final_markdown alone cannot say: an answer sent as the opening chunk arrives at the final flush carrying nothing.
  • A rejected final append counts as answerless, because the answer rode in that request.
  • An answerless reply logs slack_app_status_stream_finished_answerless with its run and trace ids.
  • The thumbs come off rather than stay on, because the run already knows it produced nothing. That makes the rate ours to measure instead of a reader's to report.
  • _final_stream_chunks extracts the closing append's chunk assembly. Mechanical, and keeps stop_status_stream under the complexity threshold.

Nothing else a person sees changes. The fork menu still attaches to every reply.

Note

#100257 refactors this same finally block into a _stop_stream helper and will conflict. It does not fix this case.

How did you test this code?

TestAnswerlessReply in products/slack_app/backend/tests/test_slack_thread.py, 4 cases.

  • Three parameterized cases cover the answered/answerless matrix: a final answer, an answer streamed as the opening chunk, and neither. No existing test asserted what a reply does when it has no answer.
  • One case covers a rejected final append, which no existing test reached on the streaming path.
  • Each new case was confirmed to fail against the unfixed code before the fix was restored.

Not covered: the relay's own streamed_answer flag. Asserting it needs a Temporal environment, and no relay workflow test exists on master to extend. A test of the flag's initial state would pass against the unfixed code, so none was added.

🤖 Agent context

Autonomy: Human-driven (agent-assisted)

Agent: Claude Code, Opus 5 (1M context)

The work started from a turn-feedback report and traced the empty reply back through stop_status_stream to the relay's narrative draining. Skills invoked: /writing-tests, /writing-user-facing-copy, /writing-pr-descriptions, /reviewing-with-coderabbit.

A relay-level test was scoped and then dropped: the cheap version would have passed against the unfixed code, and the honest version needs a Temporal harness that does not exist yet.

CodeRabbit CLI pass: none. The CLI is installed but signed out, and signing in opens a browser, so the review was skipped by choice. This PR opens without a local pass.

Duplicate check: gh pr list --state open --search over the slack_app streaming and feedback paths found no PR fixing this.

Public artifact: the investigation drew on an internal feedback report. Nothing from it reaches the diff or this description. The fallback string is invented.

A tool call drains the turn's narrative into a plan step, so a turn ending
on one leaves no final answer to stream. The reply was still closed out
with a mention, a footer and the thumbs, which pinged the reader with an
empty message and asked them to rate an answer that was never there.

The relay now reports whether prose reached the reply, since final_markdown
alone cannot say so: an answer sent as the opening chunk arrives at the
final flush carrying nothing. A reply with no answer says why it is empty,
withholds the thumbs, and logs itself so the rate is ours to measure rather
than a reader's to report.

A rejected final append takes the answer with it, so it is treated the
same way.

P1 Failed delivery counts as streamed

append_slack_agent_design_steps catches Slack failures and returns normally, so this assignment marks prose as streamed even when Slack rejected it. The subsequent stop suppresses the answerless fallback and retains feedback controls on an empty reply. Propagate or return the append outcome and set _streamed_answer only after confirmed delivery.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The relay now tracks whether it streamed narrative text and passes that state to the Slack handler. The handler uses the state and final Markdown to determine whether the reply contains an answer. If not, it adds an answerless message and omits feedback controls. Tests cover answered and unanswered streams, including a failed final append.

Priority: ⬇️ Low

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to b75a8

A rejected Slack append can remove feedback from an answered reply or leave an answerless reply without its notice. These are narrow failure cases, so the change is mergeable with owner awareness, though correcting the failed-close paths and annotations is recommended.

Preserve an already streamed answer after a failed close append.

If streamed_answer is True, the reply already contains prose. This assignment changes it to unanswered when the closing append fails. The handler then logs an answerless completion and removes feedback from an answered reply. Use streamed_answer as the fallback state. Add a rejected-close test with streamed_answer=True.

Annotate the new test helper and patched parameters.

The helper can use tuple[str, list[dict[str, object]]]; its callers only iterate over the returned blocks and compare block["type"]. Annotate each injected mock parameter to satisfy the explicit signature-annotation requirement. This is a localized code-quality correction, not a demonstrated test or build failure.

Add a guarded threaded fallback for answerless failed appends.

When chat_appendStream fails, stop_status_stream only logs the answerless state. It does not post ANSWERLESS_REPLY_MESSAGE. Add the fallback only when streamed_answer is False and final_markdown is absent. Catch fallback errors so trailing controls and chat_stopStream still execute.

Replace the new Slack chunk Any annotations.

The new trailing annotation and _final_stream_chunks footer and return types use dict[str, Any]. This does not constrain Slack chunk or block shapes. Use the pinned SDK chunk types where applicable, and define or reuse narrow TypedDict schemas for the local payloads.
