fix(desktop): make narrow panes and narrow windows readable - #9226
Fixes overlapping text in the Changes pane header when the pane is narrow (the reported bug), then sweeps every v2 pane at narrow widths and fixes four more breakages.
Header pieces now drop in a set order by pane width instead of overflowing onto each other.
In windows too narrow for the sidebar, center and right area together (~800px), the app sidebar folds to its rail so the right area no longer covers the main pane.
Why / Context
The right pane area sits at ~261px by default, and the main area gets squeezed in small windows. In those widths several panes broke: text painted over other text, the file tree shrank to ~90px, the URL field to a few letters, and the active tab's title was cut off on the left.
How It Works
Changes header (DiffPaneScope, ChangesScopeControl, CommitFilterDropdown): the commit chip and "vs base" clip their own content. Container queries on pane-header hide "vs base" below 420px and the totals below 360px; "Commits" truncates and the count stays.
Tab bar (packages/panesTabBar, scrollLeftToRevealTab): a tab wider than the strip aligns its left edge, so the title shows. The reveal also re-runs when the strip resizes. On reload it ran while the right area was still wide and never ran again.
Files / File panes (FileViewLayout): one panel group at every width, so the editor never remounts. Below 420px a Files pane shows the tree full width; a file pane hides the tree by default; shown by hand, it stays beside the file across files, panes and resizes for the session (narrowVisible, a session setting next to the existing wide-pane visible), and the split can be dragged as far as tree-only. useElementWidth moves up to usePaneRegistry/hooks since two panes use it now.
Browser toolbar: reload hides below a 300px toolbar (the existing, unused @container/browser-toolbar); back and forward always stay. ⌘R and Hard reload in the menu cover reload.
Page header: Share is icon-only below a 360px pane, keeping its aria-label and tooltip. PageShareButton takes a labelClassName; the desktop pane header passes the container query.
App sidebar in narrow windows (WorkspaceSidebarPanel, workspace-sidebar-state): folds to the 52px rail when the window is narrower than the expanded sidebar + 260 + 262 (802px at the default 280px), and unfolds when it widens again. Same rule as the Codex app (checked over CDP): once the user toggles or resizes the sidebar it stays where they put it for the rest of the session; a relaunch turns auto-fold back on. autoCollapsed is persisted in the existing workspace-sidebar-store key so a fold made by the app is undone on a wide relaunch.
Manual QA Checklist
Done over CDP on this branch's dev app, with the viewport set by Emulation.setDeviceMetricsOverride and panes opened through the real "+" menus:
Changes at 261 / 367 / 920px: no overlap; full header at 920px unchanged
Files at 261px shows the full tree; opening a file shows the file with breadcrumb, Open in and the tree toggle; the toggle shows the tree beside the file; it stays open after picking another file, widening and narrowing again; hiding it returns to the file alone (filmed, see the page)
Editor DOM node is the same across toggles and across 420px (right area expanded and restored), so undo history and cursor survive
Browser at 261px: back, forward, URL readable, reload hidden; at 367px and 920px all controls back
Tab strip: active tab title readable after adding a tab and after a full reload
Page header at 261px: title gets room, Share is icon-only
Terminal and Pages list at 261px: already fine, unchanged
Window 1200 → 760 → 1200px: sidebar 280 → rail → 280; at 760px the main pane shows in full with its close button
After a manual expand at 760px: stays open through 1200 → 760; after a manual collapse: stays collapsed at 1200
Not reachable in this dev setup: Chat, DevTools (disabled on a blank page), Pull request, Comment, Review, Changes list, Mobile
Testing
bun test in packages/panes: 144 pass. The new scrollLeftToRevealTab test fails without the fix.
bun test on the touched desktop folders (DiffPane, FileViewLayout, BrowserPane, useChangesTab): 108 pass
bun test on WorkspaceSidebarPanel + stores: all pass; the three new auto-collapse tests fail with the hook disabled. Persisted-key registry test passes.
bunx biome check on changed files: clean
bun run typecheck: panes and ui clean. Desktop shows only 10 TS1149 file-name-casing errors, caused by this worktree being reachable as both Superset and superset on disk; none in changed files.
No user-facing strings changed, so check:i18n was not run.
Known Limitations
At the 540px window minimum, even the rail (52 + 260 + 262 = 574px) does not quite fit with the right area open, so 540–573px windows still overlap by up to 34px.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
File views adapt to narrow panes, with a floating toggle for the file tree.
Workspace sidebars automatically fold in narrow windows and expand when space allows, while respecting manual changes.
Browser reload controls, diff controls, and share-button text adapt to available space.
Active tabs reposition when the tab bar is resized.
Bug Fixes
Improved scrolling for tabs wider than the visible area.
Workspace controls clip content that exceeds available space.
… narrow
The commit chip and the "vs <base>" selector shrank below the width of
their own count, label and chevrons, which then painted over the diff
totals. Both now clip their content, the base selector hides below a
420px pane and the totals below 360px, so the scope chip keeps its room.
When the tab strip is narrower than one tab, revealing the active tab
aligned its right edge and pushed the title out on the left. Align the
left edge instead, and reveal again when the strip resizes: the first
reveal can run while the right pane area is still wider than it ends up.
The tree took 35% of the pane, about 90px in the right pane area, with
names cut to "...ts". Below 420px a Files pane shows only the tree and
a file pane shows only the file, its breadcrumb and actions. Moves
useElementWidth up to usePaneRegistry/hooks now that two panes use it.

Walkthrough
Workspace panes and controls adapt to available width. Tab scrolling adjusts to scroller changes and oversized tabs. The workspace sidebar automatically folds in narrow windows and can expand when the window widens.
Below 420px, FileViewLayout selects tree-only, split, or file-only sizing. Narrow tree visibility has separate state. Floating actions pass that visibility and its toggle action to FileTreeToggle.
Pane controls use width thresholds to show or hide content. The Changes scope and commit-filter trigger clip overflow. PageShareButton accepts a class for its label, and DiffPane imports useElementWidth from an updated relative path.
Tab scrolling and oversized tabs packages/panes/.../TabBar/TabBar.tsx, packages/panes/.../TabBar/utils/utils.ts, packages/panes/.../TabBar/utils/utils.test.ts
TabBar repositions the active tab when the scroller width changes. Oversized tabs align at their left edge, with tests for two inset values.

Automatic collapse state and width check apps/desktop/.../WorkspaceSidebarPanel/utils/isWindowTooNarrowForSidebar/*, apps/desktop/src/renderer/stores/workspace-sidebar-state.ts
The sidebar store tracks automatic collapse and session adjustments. Its width check compares window width with the expanded sidebar width and minimum pane widths.
The panel invokes a hook that checks width on mount and resize. Tests cover automatic folding and expansion, manual folding, and constrained opening in a narrow window.

### Issue 1
apps/desktop/src/renderer/routes/_authenticated/_dashboard/v2-workspace/$workspaceId/hooks/usePaneRegistry/components/FileViewLayout/FileViewLayout.tsx:99-103
Resizing a right-side file pane across 420px unmounts `FilePane`, because `children` moves between `ResizablePanelGroup` and the narrow branch. `CodeEditor` then creates a new `EditorState` with empty history and no saved selection. The file text survives, but the user's undo history and cursor position disappear just from resizing the pane.
Keep the editor mounted in the same place and change only the surrounding layout.

Summary
This PR makes narrow panes easier to read by hiding lower-priority controls, showing one file surface at a time, and adjusting active-tab scrolling.
The Changes header hides details as its pane gets narrower.
File panes switch to one view when their width drops below 420px.
The tab bar brings the active tab’s left edge into view when it cannot fit.
The browser toolbar hides navigation buttons as its width shrinks.
The compact Page header hides the Share label when space runs short.

Review verdict: minor issues. The approach is sound, and the Changes, Files, Browser, tab strip and Page headers all behaved as described when driven in the dev app at 263/369/922px. Two things to fix:
MediumBrowserToolbar.tsx:197: forward hides below 300px, and the default right area is ~261px. The overflow menu has no Forward, and NAVIGATE_FORWARD drives app routing, so forward can't be reached at all. Add Back/Forward to BrowserOverflowMenu, or hide reload first (it has ⌘R).
MediumFileViewLayout.tsx:92: the narrow and split branches put children at different tree positions, so crossing 420px remounts the editor. Unsaved text survives, but focus, cursor and undo history are lost (verified). Keep one tree and collapse or hide the tree panel instead.
Low FileViewLayout.tsx:87: after opening a file from a narrow Files pane, the tree toggle is hidden, so there's no way back to the tree in that pane.
Low PageShareButton.tsx:76: the packages/ui component hard-codes the desktop pane-header container. Consider a labelClassName prop.
Note TabBar.tsx:146: re-reveal on every resize overrides a manual scroll of the strip. Probably fine.
Tests: packages/panes 144 pass; DiffPane/FileViewLayout/BrowserPane 101 pass; CI green at 11d0eb39.
With the sidebar, the center pane (260px minimum) and the right pane
area (262px minimum) all open, a window under ~800px cannot fit them,
and the right area covered the main pane and its close button. The
sidebar now folds to its rail when the window is narrower than the
expanded sidebar plus both minimums, and unfolds when it widens again.
It acts only when the window crosses that width, and only unfolds a
sidebar it folded itself, so opening or closing it by hand still wins.
The flag lives in the existing workspace-sidebar-store key.

The narrow branch hid the tree toggle, so a file opened from a narrow
Files pane had no way back to the tree, and it rendered the editor in a
different tree position, so crossing 420px remounted it and lost undo
history, cursor and focus.
One panel group now serves both widths. Below 420px the tree collapses
by default and the toggle swaps between the file and a full-width tree;
picking a file swaps back. Narrow toggles leave the saved tree
preference alone.
Forward was hidden below 300px, which is the default right pane width,
and no menu offers it. Hide reload there instead; Cmd+R and Hard reload
in the menu cover it.
The first ResizeObserver callback was skipped unconditionally, so a
resize landing in that batch left the title clipped. Compare against
the width of the last reveal instead.
Matches the Codex app: the sidebar folds and unfolds with the window
until the user toggles or resizes it, and then stays where they put it
for the rest of the session. Also uses the center pane's real 260px
minimum, and ignores a drag on the rail that leaves it unchanged so
the window can still unfold it.

Keep the narrow-mode resize handle inert, including keyboard resizing.
pointer-events-none only blocks pointer input on the element. Keyboard input on the separator is not affected. In narrow mode, the handle stays focusable and can resize the panels with arrow keys. narrowLayout does not change during that resize, so the layout effect does not restore the one-panel layout.
Pass disabled to the handle, and take it out of the tab order in narrow mode. The ResizableHandle wrapper forwards both props to PanelResizeHandle.

could not. Narrow panes now have their own session setting, next to the
existing one for wide panes: the tree starts hidden, and once shown by
hand it stays beside the file across files and panes until hidden
again. In a narrow pane the split can be dragged as far as tree-only.

Restore the file panel when selecting another file.
If the user drags the split to tree-only, selecting another file can update the existing preview pane without changing narrowLayout. The layout effect does not run, so the selected file remains hidden. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
When filePath changes, restore the file panel if it is collapsed.

Do not treat initial panel expansion as a user toggle.
If a separate Files pane is added and later removed while this file view remains mounted, the group mounts again with its wide-mode defaultSize. When that size is nonzero, the panel calls onExpand during initialization and sets narrowVisible to true, even if the user hid the narrow tree. This also changes the shared setting for other narrow file views. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
Initialize the group from the narrow setting and prevent initialization callbacks from changing that setting.

The right pane area sits at ~261px by default, and the main area gets squeezed in small windows. In those widths several panes broke: text painted over other text, the file tree shrank to ~90px, the URL field to a few letters, and the active tab's title was cut off on the left.
How It Works
DiffPaneScope,ChangesScopeControl,CommitFilterDropdown): the commit chip and "vs base" clip their own content. Container queries onpane-headerhide "vs base" below 420px and the totals below 360px; "Commits" truncates and the count stays.packages/panesTabBar,scrollLeftToRevealTab): a tab wider than the strip aligns its left edge, so the title shows. The reveal also re-runs when the strip resizes. On reload it ran while the right area was still wide and never ran again.FileViewLayout): one panel group at every width, so the editor never remounts. Below 420px a Files pane shows the tree full width; a file pane hides the tree by default; shown by hand, it stays beside the file across files, panes and resizes for the session (narrowVisible, a session setting next to the existing wide-panevisible), and the split can be dragged as far as tree-only.useElementWidthmoves up tousePaneRegistry/hookssince two panes use it now.@container/browser-toolbar); back and forward always stay. ⌘R and Hard reload in the menu cover reload.PageShareButtontakes alabelClassName; the desktop pane header passes the container query.WorkspaceSidebarPanel,workspace-sidebar-state): folds to the 52px rail when the window is narrower than the expanded sidebar + 260 + 262 (802px at the default 280px), and unfolds when it widens again. Same rule as the Codex app (checked over CDP): once the user toggles or resizes the sidebar it stays where they put it for the rest of the session; a relaunch turns auto-fold back on.autoCollapsedis persisted in the existingworkspace-sidebar-storekey so a fold made by the app is undone on a wide relaunch.Manual QA Checklist
