Adds the @openzeppelin/compact-lint npm package, a Node bin that fetches the prebuilt compact-lint binary for the host from the GitHub release of the same version, verifies it against checksums.txt, caches it inside the package, and passes arguments and exit codes through. COMPACT_LINT_BINARY skips the download for source builds and air-gapped CI. * release.yml: compact-lint bumps package.json and the crate version together and refreshes Cargo.lock. * release-publish.yml: detection becomes its own job; a four-runner matrix builds the Linux and macOS binaries and the publish job creates the GitHub release with the assets before npm publish, so the package never points at a release that is not there yet. * Cargo.toml: stripped, thin-LTO release profile (3.3 MiB binary). * tests: target mapping, checksum verification, the download path against a local server, pass-through, and a guard that the npm and crate versions agree.

The published packages are compact-builder, compact-cli, compact-deployer and compact-simulator, so the wrapper follows the same shape as @openzeppelin/compact-linter under packages/linter, with a compact-linter bin and a compact-linter/v<version> release tag. The crate, its binary and the release asset names stay compact-lint.
Carries the content half of the rename: manifest name and bin, release tag path, stderr prefix, workflows, docs and the lockfile. The previous commit only moved the directory.

Keep release credentials out of dependency installation and build steps.
actions/checkout persists its token by default. In release.yml and the publish job, checkout writes the write-capable GitHub App token to .git/config before dependency installation and build. Project or dependency code can read and use that token. The binaries job is separate and has only contents: read, so it does not expose publishing credentials. Its checkout still persists a read token before Cargo runs.
id-token: write does not mint an npm credential by itself. It lets any step request an OIDC token. The publish job grants this permission while installation and build code run, before the explicit yarn npm publish consumer.
Build packages in a job without write or OIDC permissions, then upload an artifact. Run npm publishing in a separate job that consumes the artifact. Set persist-credentials: false on all cited checkouts. Create the GitHub App token only for trusted release operations, and authenticate the tag push explicitly instead of relying on checkout persistence. Keep the existing explicit GH_TOKEN and verified-bot-commit consumers.

Reject an existing tag that points to another commit.
A manual dispatch checks out github.ref, which can be any branch. If that ref has the same package version as an existing tag but points to a different commit, the workflow accepts the tag and publishes the package from the checked-out HEAD. For compact-linter, gh release upload "$TAG" ... --clobber can also replace assets attached to that tag.
Fail when the existing tag does not resolve to HEAD. The workflow creates lightweight tags, but an existing tag can be annotated. Compare the peeled commit for annotated tags and the direct object for lightweight tags:

The --clobber path at line 293 has a second effect: checksums.txt is uploaded to the same release, so the launcher accepts the replaced binaries. Immutable releases are off for this repository, and the npm package does not hold the digests.
Failure scenario: version 0.2.0 is published from commit X. Later commits change crates/compact-lint without a version bump. A maintainer runs the documented workflow_dispatch recovery from main. The binaries job builds the later commit, the tag stays at X, and gh release upload --clobber replaces all binaries and checksums.txt before yarn npm publish rejects the version. New installs of compact-linter@0.2.0 then run a binary that was not built from compact-linter/v0.2.0, and the checksum check passes.
Fix: when the tag exists, build from the tag commit (or fail when HEAD differs). Remove --clobber and fail if an existing asset has a different digest. Put checksums.txt in the npm package and read the expected digest from the installed package, not from the release.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
@pepebndc Thanks for the clarification. You are correct: replacing both the binaries and checksums.txt makes the checksum check pass. npm rejecting the existing version does not undo those replacements.
My earlier tag check addresses only part of the problem. Its git ls-remote command also needs to request "refs/tags/$TAG^{}" explicitly to retrieve an annotated tag’s peeled commit.
- Validate the existing tag before building release binaries.
- Preserve existing release assets and reject digest mismatches.
- Include
checksums.txtin the npm package and use it as the expected-digest source. - Add regression tests and update recovery documentation.

Learning: For the Compact linter npm distribution, expected binary digests must come from `checksums.txt` bundled with the installed npm package, not from the same mutable GitHub release that supplies the binaries. Release recovery must preserve existing assets and reject digest mismatches; replacing both binaries and their release-hosted checksum manifest does not provide integrity for an already published npm version.

Learning: In .github/workflows/release-publish.yml, the workflow_dispatch checkout should use github.ref intentionally so releases can be published from hotfix or release-prep branches (not only main). Do not require a main-branch-only checkout/rate-limiting change for this flow; the intended security control is the compact-npm-prod GitHub Actions environment approval gate.

Do not map all Linux hosts to GNU binaries.
process.platform reports linux on musl systems such as Alpine Linux. These mappings download a glibc-linked binary, which cannot run without the GNU dynamic loader.
Detect the libc implementation before selecting the target. Alternatively, reject musl hosts with a specific error until musl release assets exist. Also document the GNU libc requirement.

Store the runtime cache outside the installed package.
A global installation or a container can make packageDir read-only for the runtime user. The first execution then fails at mkdirSync or writeFileSync with EACCES.
Use a user-writable cache directory such as $XDG_CACHE_HOME, the platform cache directory, or an explicit cache environment variable.

This also fails in the default install mode of Yarn 4 (Plug'n'Play), not only for global or container installs. Under PnP the package stays inside a read-only zip archive, and package.json has no preferUnplugged. Every run downloads the binary again and then fails before it starts:
compact-linter: downloading compact-lint-aarch64-apple-darwin (v0.1.0)
compact-linter: EROFS: read-only filesystem, mkdir '/node_modules/@openzeppelin/compact-linter/.cache'
exit=2
Reproduced with the packed tarball in a Yarn 4.10.3 project with nodeLinker: pnp. The package README tells users to install with yarn add --dev. Adding "preferUnplugged": true makes the same project work. A per-user cache directory fixes both this case and the read-only case above.

@pepebndc Thanks for the reproduction and guidance. This confirms that the cache location also breaks Yarn 4 Plug’n’Play installs, not just read-only global or container installs.
"preferUnplugged": true addresses the PnP case. A per-user cache is the broader fix because it also supports read-only package directories. The cache should remain scoped by linter, version, and target.
