Depends on #179, merge after.

Types of changes

  • Bugfix (non-breaking change which fixes an issue)
  • New feature (non-breaking change which adds functionality)
  • Breaking change (fix or feature that would cause existing functionality to not work as expected)
  • Documentation Update (if none of the other choices apply)

No linked issue. Second PR of the compact-lint stack: the check command. fix and fill-constraints follow and only add tables to the same compact-lint.toml.

Not visible in the diff:

  • examples/compact-contracts.toml is the config seeded from the compact-contracts doc conventions. Run from that repo root it reports 515 findings in 39 files: 231 missing-constraints, 213 forbidden-tag (@return vs @returns), 71 missing-doc. Spot-checked, no false positives. 168 of the 231 are circuits still tagged @circuitInfo; setting [constraints] tag = "@circuitInfo" brings the total to 348.
  • Every test runs with --no-format: CI has no compact binary. The formatter pass was measured against compact 0.5.1, which prints one flush-left <path>: line per unformatted file on stderr.
  • Constraints are required on exported non-pure circuits only, and that is fixed rather than configurable, matching how the library uses the tag today.
  • @module Signer<T> and @module Utils. appear in the corpus, so module-name compares the first word without generics or trailing punctuation.

Start with crates/compact-lint/README.md, then src/rules.rs.

Adds the compact-lint CLI with one subcommand, check, that enforces
per-declaration-kind doc-comment templates from compact-lint.toml and
optionally runs compact format --check. Findings print one per line
as path:line:col: rule: message on stdout; exit 1 on findings, 2 on
any error. fix and fill-constraints come later and only add tables
to the same toml.

* doc: tags parsed into an ordered list with line and column, so a
  finding points at the @ of the offending tag.
* rules: missing-doc, missing-tag, forbidden-tag, module-name,
  missing-constraints, constraints-format, constraints-placeholder
  (--strict), parse, format. Constraints apply to exported non-pure
  circuits only.
* config: every field optional, unknown keys and tags without their @
  rejected; an explicit --config is a preset anchored at the cwd.
* tests: one fixture case per rule through the binary, plus unit
  tests per module.
Discovery matches exclude globs against paths relative to the
config's directory, but an explicit CLI path stayed relative to
the process cwd. Running `check archive` from a subdirectory
produced `archive/X.compact`, which never matched an exclude
written as `contracts/archive/**`, so excluded files were
silently linted. Anchor relative CLI paths at cwd first; the
display step still strips cwd, so the report is unchanged.
A constructor with no side effects; matches the rest of Tag.
The constraints rule ran after the per-kind docs gate, so
kinds.circuit.docs = "none" silently disabled it. The rule is
fixed rather than configurable, so it now runs before the gate;
only the required-tag loop stays behind it.

docs = "none" still turns off the constraints rule for an undocumented circuit.

The README says that the constraints rule is fixed and not configurable. Under docs = "none", missing-doc does not fire, and this early return skips missing-constraints when the circuit has no doc comment. Thus no rule reports the circuit.

Reproduce:

version = 1
[kinds.circuit]
docs = "none"
pragma language_version 0.26;
import CompactStandardLibrary;
export ledger n: Counter;
export circuit bump(): [] { n.increment(1); }

check --no-format --strict reports only the ledger. If you add /** @description x */ above bump, missing-constraints appears. Thus, if you delete the doc comment, the rule stops. the_constraints_rule_survives_docs_none covers only the documented case.

Fix: when the circuit has no doc comment and the docs policy does not require one, report missing-constraints for an exported non-pure circuit. Add the undocumented case to the test.

./dir and ../dir paths bypass exclude.

cwd.join(path) keeps the . and .. components. After strip_prefix(base), the path is contracts/./archive/Old.compact or contracts/live/../archive/Old.compact, and contracts/archive/** does not match it.

Reproduce with the exclude-explicit-dir fixture:

  • From contracts/, check --no-format archive gives 0 findings in 0 files (correct).
  • From contracts/, check --no-format ./archive gives archive/Old.compact:6:3: missing-doc and exit 1.
  • From contracts/live/, check --no-format ../archive gives ../archive/Old.compact:6:3: missing-doc and exit 1.

The same cause makes Normal.compact and contracts/../Normal.compact count as two files.

Fix: normalize each path after the join (remove ., resolve ..), or canonicalize base and each path. Add the ./archive and ../archive forms to the existing test.

fn parse_constraints(value: &str) -> Option<bool> {
let rest = value.strip_prefix("k=")?;
let (k, rest) = rest.split_once(',')?;
let rows = rest.trim_start().strip_prefix("rows=")?;

constraints-format rejects the annotation form that compact-contracts uses now.

The parser accepts only k=<n>, rows=<n> with no text after rows. compact-contracts main writes @constraints k=6, rows=34 (zkir-v3). 30 annotations use this suffix, in Ecdsa, Eip712, EvmAbi, Secp256k1EcdsaMultisig, ShieldedMultiSigV2 and NativeShieldedTokenIssuer.

With examples/compact-contracts.toml on the current compact-contracts main, each of these correct measurements gives a finding such as:

contracts/src/multisig/presets/ShieldedMultiSigV2.compact:142:6: constraints-format: @constraints value `k=13, rows=5898 (zkir-v3)` is not `k=<n>, rows=<n>`

The numbers in the PR description come from an older checkout, before the suffix.

Fix: accept optional text after rows=<n> when whitespace separates it, for example a (...) suffix. Keep k and rows strict. Add a fixture line with (zkir-v3), and update the unit test that expects (approx) to fail.
