Types of changes

What types of changes does your code introduce to OpenZeppelin Midnight Contracts?
Put an x in the boxes that apply

  • Bugfix (non-breaking change which fixes an issue)
  • New feature (non-breaking change which adds functionality)
  • Breaking change (fix or feature that would cause existing functionality to not work as expected)
  • Documentation Update (if none of the other choices apply)

Fixes #1129

The release workflows never touched CHANGELOG.md, so rolling ## Unreleased was a separate PR someone had to remember. Three of the last six tags (v0.4.0-alpha.2, alpha.3, alpha.6) shipped with their entries still under Unreleased. The bump commit now does the roll, the GitHub Release reads that section, and a PR check asks for an entry.

Not visible in the diff:

  • --generate-notes stays next to --notes-file. The releases API prepends the body to the generated notes, so the curated section comes first and the PR list and compare link follow. An empty section degrades to generated notes only.
  • allow_empty_changelog exists because the first rc cut and a clean audit both prepare a release from an empty Unreleased section (see the Common flows in RELEASING.md).
  • The check is its own workflow because adding labeled/unlabeled to checks.yml would re-run lint on every label toggle.
  • contracts/src/**/test/ is excluded from the trigger (193 of 240 files under contracts/src).

Needs a repo admin after merge, both documented under One-time setup in RELEASING.md:

  • create the skip-changelog label
  • require the Changelog entry check in the Main Branch Protection ruleset

PR Checklist

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Release Process

    • Pull requests that change contract code must include a changelog entry, unless marked as not user-facing.
    • Release preparation moves unreleased entries into a dated version section. Releases cannot be created if the required version section is missing.
    • Empty changelog sections are rejected by default, with an option to allow them during release preparation.
  • Documentation

    • Updated contribution and release guidance to explain changelog requirements and release handling.

The release workflows never touched CHANGELOG.md, so a separate
changelog PR had to be remembered each release. Three of the last six
tags (v0.4.0-alpha.2, alpha.3, alpha.6) shipped with their entries
still under Unreleased and no section of their own.

* prepare-release: rename Unreleased to the new version in the bump
commit; fail on an empty section unless allow_empty_changelog is set
* create-release: open the GitHub Release notes with that section and
  fail if it is missing
* changelog.yml: require a CHANGELOG entry on PRs that change
contracts/src outside test dirs, or the skip-changelog label

Closes #1129

Inline node in a run: block is unreachable from a test and unrunnable
locally, the same reason the live workflow calls scripts/live-ci.ts.
The three changelog steps now share one entry point with pure rules in
scripts/ci/changelog.ts and unit tests next to the other CI helpers.
create-release and changelog gain a Node setup since the runner's
default cannot strip types.

Walkthrough

Adds changelog validation for contract-source changes, rolls ## Unreleased into a versioned section during release preparation, and includes the matching changelog section in release notes. Adds contributor guidance, CI workflows, CLI commands, and tests for these rules.

Changes

Changelog and release flow

Layer / File(s) Summary
Changelog rules and commands
scripts/ci/changelog.ts, scripts/release-ci.ts, scripts/ci/test/changelog.test.ts
Adds rules to roll changelog sections, extract version notes, and check contract-source changes. The CLI exposes these operations, and tests cover their success and failure cases.
Pull-request changelog check
.github/workflows/changelog.yml, .github/PULL_REQUEST_TEMPLATE.md, CONTRIBUTING.md, RELEASING.md
Adds a pull-request check that uses the skip-changelog label when present. The template and contributor guidance describe the changelog entry or label requirement.
Release changelog integration
.github/workflows/prepare-release.yml, .github/workflows/create-release.yml, RELEASING.md
Release preparation rolls ## Unreleased into a dated version section, with an option to allow an empty section. Release creation supplies the matching changelog section as notes alongside generated notes. The release guide documents these steps and related failure handling.

The changelog check can be satisfied by editing CHANGELOG.md without adding a real entry. An allowed empty release can show a stray heading in its notes. Neither blocks releases, so the PR is mergeable with owner awareness.

Explanation

Issue #1129 requires the changelog to remain accurate. The PR automates the release path: rollUnreleased moves ## Unreleased into a versioned section, releaseNotes supplies that section to gh release create, and the PR workflow checks changelog entries for contract-source changes. Unit tests cover rolling, note extraction, and entry checks. The linked issue has no additional coding criteria.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The workflow, script, test, and documentation changes support the changelog automation in issue #1129. Node setup enables the new scripts in CI. The skip-changelog path and empty-section option document and implement release and contribution cases described by the PR. No unrelated change is demonstrated.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 91.67% which is sufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff. Analyzed 12 functions across 3 files. (6 skipped: 6 unsupported.)

A rabbit checks the changelog line,
Then rolls the entries neat and fine.
The release notes hop along,
With dated headers in their song.
One last nibble—checks all right!
Then off I bound into the night.

Review follow-ups on the changelog check and the notes extraction:

* changelog-check compares the Unreleased bullets across the PR instead
of accepting any CHANGELOG.md edit, so a historical-section edit no
longer passes. The chore/bump-* PR is exempt since it moves entries.
* a runtime dependency bump in contracts/package.json counts as a
contract change; devDependencies alone do not.
* a heading-only section yields empty notes, so an allowed empty roll
falls back to the generated notes without a stray "### Changed".
* an entry heading written as "##" fails the roll and the notes with a
message naming it instead of silently truncating the section.

Nit: the other errors in this file don't prefix with ::error::. Any reason not to make this consistent?

Done in 38b5935. It was a leftover from the shell version of the check.

The prefix was a leftover from the shell version of the check. The
other failures in release-ci.ts print plain messages, and the step
fails either way.
