Fix: highlight/color cells that contain numbers (is_number condition) - #58
Conversation
Fixes "change all cells with numbers to red" / "highlight cells that contain numbers red" mis-routing to a garbage contains literal (to/red). - shared/toolTypes.ts: add 'is_number' to FormatConditionOperator. - shared/formatContains.ts: drop plural 'numbers' from the filler-skip group and reject stop/type/color words via exported CONTAINS_STOP_WORDS so a "contains numbers" phrase returns null and defers to highlight_numbers. - shared/colorMaps.ts: export shared COLOR_WORD_RE. - shared/toolRegistry.ts: advertise is_number in the condition description. - shared/capabilities.js/.d.ts: new highlight_numbers capability + numeric_format param strategy. - shared/actTemplates.ts: numeric branch (after negative/equals, before contains), plural-only trigger + number-format guard, bgColor red default. - src/lib/formatCellsTool.ts: is_number in validOps, bare-string branch, and evaluator (non-blank display parses to finite number via parseNumericDisplay). - src/sandbox/api.ts: is_number case in findCells (parseNumericDisplay). - src/agent/toolHandlers/queryOps.ts: is_number in count_rows (supported set, value guard, countValueMatches). - src/ai/capabilities/resolveParams.ts: numeric_format case + STOP-word backstop on the contains_value fallback capture. - src/agent/parser.ts: Tier-1 numeric block after negatives, plural-only trigger, !number-format guard, bgColor red default. - server/src/prompt.ts: is_number background-fill example. Verification (run from .worktrees/highlight-numbers; reviewer need not re-run): - Client: npx tsc --noEmit -> clean - Client: npx eslint <changed client/shared files> --max-warnings 0 -> 0 warnings - Client: npx vitest run -> 171 files, 2211 tests passed - Client: npm run build -> built OK - Server: cd server; npx tsc --noEmit -> clean - Server: cd server; npx vitest run -> 44 files, 623 tests passed (server node_modules installed via npm install first) - registry.test.ts.snap autocrlf-only change restored, not committed.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy lift
Preserve explicitly quoted contains values.
If the user asks to highlight cells containing "red", this filter rejects the literal. resolveActTemplates can then apply a red background without a condition, which targets the selection rather than cells containing "red". Retain whether the capture was quoted, and reject color words only when they are unquoted formatting cues.

Require a highlight intent before creating a numeric fill. Both routes treat numeric wording as a request for a red background even when the user requested another operation. “Make numeric cells bold” loses bold; the parser also turns “change numeric values to 0” into a fill.

Map recognized black and white fills instead of defaulting to red. The color matchers accept black and white, but HIGHLIGHT_BG_HEX has neither key. Add their intended background mappings in shared/colorMaps.ts.

Reject symbol-only displays in the shared numeric parser. parseNumericDisplay('$') returns 0 after removing the symbol. Each new is_number predicate consequently treats $ as numeric.

**Sandbox API docs omit numeric matching**
Script authors following the documented `findCells` signature will not know that `is_number` is supported, so they cannot use the new numeric-match condition from the documented API.
Update the sandbox API documentation signature to include `is_number`.
</issue_to_address>Sourcery assessment
Needs a human reviewer. If the new numeric condition targets the wrong cells, applying it writes fill formatting into the workbook. Reverting stops future applications but does not remove fills already saved; the affected formatting is bounded and can be cleared or reapplied.
extractCellContainsValue rejected any captured stop/color word (number, red, etc.) unconditionally, so a deliberate literal search like highlight cells containing "red" was wrongly discarded. The regex now captures whether the value was quoted; the stop-word guard applies ONLY to unquoted captures. An unquoted color/type cue still defers to highlight_numbers (unchanged); a quoted value is kept as a literal contains. The resolveParams contains_value fallback was also re-checking stop-words unconditionally, which would undo the fix on the primary path, so it now trusts extractCellContainsValue's quote-aware result and only guards the looser fallback regex. 3 new tests pin the quoted-literal behavior; all existing cases unchanged. Verified: tsc clean, eslint 0 warnings, 83 related tests pass. Addresses a CodeRabbit review finding on PR #58 (verified valid against current code).
The numeric-cell highlight branch (added with the is_number operator) was too greedy about intent, so phrasings that aren't background-fill requests got swallowed as a highlight: - Client (src/agent/parser.ts): the trigger included bare change/make, so "make numeric cells bold" and "change the numeric values to 0" produced a background fill instead of falling through. The branch now requires a real highlight/fill verb (highlight/color/mark/shade/fill) OR an explicit color word; "make numbers red" still works via the color word. - Server (shared/actTemplates.ts): within resolveFormattingTemplate the numeric branch pre-empted the generic bold / font-color handlers, so "make numeric cells bold" became a highlight. It now requires highlight/fill or a color word AND excludes bold / text/font/writing intent, so those fall through to the bold and font-color handlers. (The formatting RULE's own gate already keeps non-format requests like "sum of the numbers" from reaching this resolver at all.) Both branches only ever emit a background fill, so gating on explicit highlight/color intent is the correct scope. "highlight cells with numbers" and "color numeric cells blue" still route to is_number. Regression tests: client parser (color/highlight numeric still is_number; bold / value-change do NOT); server actTemplates numeric-highlight gating (highlight/color -> is_number; bold -> bold:true not is_number; numeric font color -> not is_number). tsc clean, eslint 0 warnings, 103 related tests pass, build OK. Addresses a CodeRabbit review finding on PR #58 (verified valid against current code).
