What does this PR do?

Type of change: test

Reruns a test once when it fails with a known transient error, using one mechanism for two kinds of flakiness:

  • Blackwell CUDA crashes in gpu_megatron. These tests were skipped on Blackwell; they now run again. This also covers test_dsa_kv_cache_quant, which was failing unrelated PRs.
  • Hugging Face Hub, network and port-collision errors in every test group. Before, only example commands run through run_example_command retried these, with their own loop. GPU tests that call from_pretrained, load_dataset or snapshot_download directly had no retry.

tests/conftest.py adds @pytest.mark.flaky(reruns=1, reruns_delay=10, only_rerun=[...]) from pytest-rerunfailures to every test. It reruns only failures whose exception chain matches one of these:

  • the Hub/network/port patterns, now shared in tests/_test_utils/transient_errors.py;
  • TransientError, which run_example_command now raises when a failed command's output shows one of those patterns, instead of retrying internally;
  • on Blackwell, for gpu_megatron tests that use a worker pool only: illegal memory access, CUBLAS_STATUS_INTERNAL_ERROR, or a worker death where every dead rank exited with -6 (SIGABRT), the same crash surfacing as an abort.

Any other failure fails with no rerun, including assertion errors and a worker killed by OOM (-9). The same error twice in a row also fails.

Why one mechanism. Every retry is visible in the log, where the old in-helper retry only printed a warning: a RERUN line for the attempt, a count in the final line (462 passed, 3 rerun), and, with --rerun-show-tracebacks now in addopts, a "rerun test summary info" section with each rerun attempt's traceback. Without that flag nothing showed why a test was rerun, since -ra and --instafail skip rerun attempts. Each attempt gets its own timeout. The tradeoff: a transient error in one step of a multi-step example test reruns the whole test, not just that command.

Matching fix. For in-process example steps, the old retry searched traceback.format_exc(), which includes the source lines of each frame, so a pattern in code or a comment could trigger a retry. It now matches the exception chain's messages and the step's printed output.

Why a rerun works. A failed job retires its worker pool, and the function-scoped dist_workers* fixtures give the rerun a fresh one. The crash depends on how many jobs a worker has run (see below), so a fresh worker passes the test.

Why all pool tests, not a marked list. The crash lands on whichever test reaches about the 13th job in a worker, so any gpu_megatron test can hit it. A per-test marker would keep missing new victims. Tests that run CUDA in the pytest process are left out: a crash there breaks the process, and the rerun runs in the same one.

Why bother. Both GPU CI lanes run on RTX PRO 6000 (Blackwell), so the 54 skipped test cases had no CI coverage. The skip reason also still named the old nemo:26.06 stack, while CI now runs nemo:26.08.

Tradeoff. A real modelopt bug that causes an intermittent illegal memory access would be hidden by the rerun. A deterministic one still fails, since its rerun crashes too. The rerun count is in the final summary line, with each error in the "rerun test summary info" section; a rising count means a regression or a worse upstream stack.

Changes:

  • tests/conftest.py: the rerun marker, replacing the flaky_cuda_crash_on_blackwell marker and xfail hook from the earlier commits of this PR.
  • tests/_test_utils/transient_errors.py: the shared pattern list (moved from run_command.py) and TransientError.
  • run_example_command: raises TransientError instead of retrying; the hf_max_retries and hf_retry_delay_s parameters are gone.
  • pyproject.toml: adds pytest-rerunfailures to dev-test, and --rerun-show-tracebacks to addopts. uv.lock is left to the weekly relock job.
  • The tests previously behind skip_flaky_on_blackwell, plus test_dsa_kv_cache_quant: no longer skipped.
  • test_regular_state_dict[320]: stays skipped. It runs in the pytest process itself, so a crash would break every later test.
  • test_adapter_gradient_flow_freeze_lora_with_api: stays skipped. Its crash is deterministic, so a rerun would not help.
  • is_blackwell() in tests/_test_utils/torch/misc.py replaces three copies of the same GPU check.

New dependency license. pytest-rerunfailures is MPL-2.0: weak copyleft, applying only to its own files if modified and distributed. It is used unmodified and only in the dev-test extra, and tqdm, a core dependency, is already MPL-2.0 AND MIT. Matching along the exception chain needs 16.7 (exception classes in only_rerun need 16.2); ~=16.7 covers both. Per CONTRIBUTING.md, this still needs a check with the setup codeowners.

Root cause (still open; waiting for nemo:26.10). The crash is not from a recent commit. It happens on the Nth job a worker process runs, whichever test that is:

We will retest on the nemo:26.10 container and drop the rerun if the crash is gone.

Testing

  • tests/unit/test_example_run_command.py, rewritten for TransientError: passes in nemo:26.08. Its raising line has ConnectionError in a comment, so the old traceback matching would fail the non-transient case.

  • Rerun check in nemo:26.08 on Ada, using a throwaway test file (not committed):

    • A Hub error wrapped in another exception was rerun once, then passed.
    • An example step whose output showed "Too Many Requests" was rerun once, then passed.
    • A subprocess that kept printing "503 Server Error" was rerun once, then failed with TransientError.
    • An assertion error was not rerun.
    • With is_blackwell() forced on: a CUDA crash that happens once was rerun on a different worker and passed; one that happens every time was rerun once, then failed.
  • Collection with is_blackwell() forced on: all 502 gpu_megatron tests get the marker, and the 241 worker-pool tests also get the CUDA crash patterns.

  • CI on a temp branch with the Blackwell rerun (before the worker-pool filter and the Hub unification; runs 40588283353, 40588292684), 2 runs of each job on Blackwell, all green:

Job Result per run Reruns per run Time
    gpu_megatron, 1 GPU 416 passed 1 9-11 min
    gpu_megatron, 2 GPUs, --run-manual --run-nightly 462 passed 3 12 min
    test_dsa_kv_cache_quant ×40, 1 GPU 40 passed 0

An earlier round without the -6 pattern had 2 of 6 jobs red from a worker abort (and one from the unrelated test_qkv_slicing_gqa_tp2 race, which also fails on main).

  • Not run locally: the example tests themselves; this PR's CI covers them.

Walkthrough

GPU Megatron tests now use a cached Blackwell check and a pytest collection hook that enables one rerun for specified CUDA and worker failures. Several quantization tests no longer use a shared Blackwell skip marker. The hidden-size-320 quantization case and the PEFT gradient-flow test retain targeted Blackwell skips.

Changes: Blackwell GPU test handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Blackwell detection and rerun dependency
tests/_test_utils/torch/misc.py, pyproject.toml
The cached is_blackwell() helper checks CUDA availability and whether the GPU’s major compute capability is at least 12. The dev-test extra adds pytest-rerunfailures~=16.7.
Failure matching and marking
tests/gpu_megatron/conftest.py
On Blackwell, the collection hook marks tests under tests/gpu_megatron for one rerun when failures match one of three configured CUDA or worker patterns.
Test-specific Blackwell handling

Explanation

The PR adds pytest-rerunfailures~=16.7. PyPI metadata identifies version 16.7 as MPL-2.0, which is not a permissive license such as MIT or Apache-2. The available PR description is truncated before its final testing section, so it does not establish whether the required NVIDIA modelopt-setup-codeowners approval and explicit justification are present. The changed Python files are test files, and no prohibited load, eval, exec, trust_remote_code, allow_pickle, or nosec pattern was added.

Resolution

Provide the complete PR description and approval evidence for the MPL-2.0 dependency, or replace it with a permissively licensed dependency.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title names two changes: rerunning known transient failures (HF/network errors and Blackwell CUDA crashes). The changeset covers only the Blackwell CUDA crash part. It adds a rerun marker in tests/gpu_megatron/conftest.py, adds pytest-rerunfailures to pyproject.toml, removes Blackwell skips, and adds is_blackwell(). Nothing in the provided summaries touches HF or network error reruns. The title therefore describes the change only in part and also refers to something absent from this changeset.

Resolution

Confirm whether the HF/network error rerun is part of this PR. If it is not, retitle to the Blackwell change, for example: "Rerun known Blackwell CUDA crashes in gpu_megatron instead of skipping tests". If it is, add the HF/network rerun changes to the PR summary so the reviewers can check them.

LGTM: the change is two lines and reuses the file's existing skip_flaky_on_blackwell marker, the same way about six other tests in this file already do. The skip is justified because the test fails intermittently on Blackwell, and it still runs on other GPUs.

Needs action:

  • Sign off as a human on skipping an existing test, which drops DSA KV-cache coverage on Blackwell (sm_120) until the suspected regression from #2618, #2981 or #2744 is bisected.
  • Consider opening a tracking issue for that bisect and linking it from the new comment above test_dsa_kv_cache_quant, so the skip doesn't become permanent.

No action needed:

  • skip_flaky_on_blackwell is defined at module scope in the same file, with a TODO that says the marked tests should be re-enabled once the problem is fixed.
  • No licensing, size or design concerns.

Replace the Blackwell skip with a flaky_cuda_crash_on_blackwell marker: on
sm_120, a marked test whose failure is a known CUDA crash (illegal memory
access, CUBLAS_STATUS_INTERNAL_ERROR, dead worker) is reported as xfail, and
any other failure still fails. The worker pool is replaced after a crash, so
it no longer cascades into later tests. test_regular_state_dict[320] stays
skipped since it runs in the pytest process itself.

Review notes (no blockers). The hook is correct, the crash patterns match the code (Worker process(es) died is raised at tests/_test_utils/torch/distributed/utils.py:234), and nothing still references skip_flaky_on_blackwell.

  • Masking a real bug: illegal memory access and Worker process(es) died are broad. A genuine modelopt out-of-bounds bug in a marked test would show as xfail, and this is the only GPU lane. Consider surfacing the xfail count in the job summary so a jump is visible, and note the tradeoff in the description.
  • Duplicated capability check: torch.cuda.is_available() and torch.cuda.get_device_capability()[0] >= 12 now appears in the conftest _IS_BLACKWELL, the inline skipif for test_regular_state_dict[320], and test_megatron_peft.py:43. Reusing one helper would remove it (nit).
  • CUDA init at conftest import: _IS_BLACKWELL initializes CUDA in the pytest process for every gpu_megatron run, including a single selected file. test_megatron.py already did this at import, so I don't expect new breakage; worth a look if workers are forked afterwards.

Not run on Blackwell; the first CI run will show the real runtime and xfail counts.

…l hook

A dead worker (e.g. an OOM kill) is no longer reported as a known Blackwell
crash, and the hook matches the exception message instead of the whole
report, whose traceback source lines can mention these errors. Share one
is_blackwell() check, evaluated lazily in the hook.

Addressed in ef28231:

  • Masking a real bug: the hook now tolerates only illegal memory access and CUBLAS_STATUS_INTERNAL_ERROR, and matches them in the exception message instead of the whole report. A dead worker, such as an OOM kill, now fails. The tradeoff is noted in the PR description. Putting the XFAIL count in the job summary is postponed: it needs a workflow change, and -ra already lists every XFAIL in the log.
  • Duplicated capability check: replaced by is_blackwell() in tests/_test_utils/torch/misc.py.
  • CUDA init at conftest import: the hook calls is_blackwell() only after the other conditions match, so the conftest no longer initializes CUDA at import. The test files already did at collection before this PR, and the worker pool starts its processes with spawn rather than fork.

…g them

On Blackwell, every gpu_megatron test gets one rerun on a fresh worker when it
fails with a known CUDA crash (illegal memory access, CUBLAS_STATUS_INTERNAL_ERROR,
or a worker abort). Any other failure, or the same crash twice, still fails.
This replaces the flaky_cuda_crash_on_blackwell marker and xfail hook, since the
crash depends on how many jobs a worker has run and can hit any test.

Replaced the xfail marker and hook with a rerun in 20f7554. On Blackwell, every gpu_megatron test now gets one rerun on a fresh worker, but only for the known crash messages (illegal memory access, CUBLAS_STATUS_INTERNAL_ERROR, or a worker abort with -6).

The crash depends on how many jobs a worker has run, not on which test it is, so a list of marked tests kept missing new victims. A rerun passes on a fresh worker instead of hiding the test as xfail. Two CI rounds on a temp branch were all green. The description has the numbers and the cuBLAS call that fails. We'll retest on nemo:26.10 and remove the rerun if the crash is gone.

…chanism

Every test now gets one rerun, 10 s later, when it fails with a known transient
error (HF Hub/network/port collision, shared in _test_utils.transient_errors), or
on Blackwell with the known cuBLAS crash in a gpu_megatron worker-pool test.

run_example_command no longer retries internally: on a transient failure it raises
TransientError, which the rerun matches. In-process steps are now matched on the
exception chain's messages and the step's output instead of the formatted
traceback, whose source lines could match a marker.

Bot review (bedrock-claude-opus-5-5) — DM the bot to share feedback.

Nudge: the design is sound and the earlier review threads are closed, but a human has to sign off on the new MPL-2.0 dependency, and I couldn't confirm the plugin API the conftest hook depends on.

Needs action:

  • Get the setup codeowners to sign off on adding pytest-rerunfailures (MPL-2.0) to dev-test. The PR flags this check as still pending under CONTRIBUTING.md.
  • Confirm that pytest-rerunfailures~=16.7 accepts exception classes in only_rerun (here TransientError) and matches against the exception chain, not just the regex reprcrash.message. If it doesn't, raise the lower pin to the release that does. See the inline comment.
  • Remove either the hasplugin("rerunfailures") fallback or the claim about it in the description. With --rerun-show-tracebacks in addopts, pytest exits on an unrecognized argument before the hook runs.
  • Consider narrowing the -6 worker-death regex in tests/conftest.py. NCCL watchdog and TORCH_CHECK aborts also exit with -6, and the pattern still matches when another rank died with -9.

No action needed:

  • ✔️ Resolved since the last review: the match on any worker death, reruns of in-process tests, and the duplicated Blackwell check. The author explained why every rank isn't checked separately, and CodeRabbit accepted that tradeoff.
  • The edits to existing tests are justified. test_example_run_command.py follows the removed in-helper retry, and the removed skips are replaced by the rerun.

- Rerun a worker death only when every dead rank exited with -6 (SIGABRT), so an
abort alongside an OOM kill (-9) on another rank still fails.
- Remove the hasplugin("rerunfailures") guard: --rerun-show-tracebacks in addopts
  already makes the plugin required.
- Explain the pytest-rerunfailures pin and why its MPL-2.0 license is fine.

LGTM: the code-level concerns from the last review are resolved. A human still has to sign off on the new MPL-2.0 test dependency.

Needs action:

  • Get the setup codeowners to sign off on adding pytest-rerunfailures~=16.7 (MPL-2.0) to dev-test in pyproject.toml. The PR marks this CONTRIBUTING.md check as still pending, and the licence call has to be made by a person.

No action needed:

  • ✔️ Resolved since the last review: the ~=16.7 pin (the author traced class support to 16.2 and exception-chain matching to 16.7, and the pin comment now says why), the dead hasplugin fallback (removed), and the greedy -6 regex (it now matches only when every dead rank exited with -6).
  • The -6 regex matches the exact message DistributedWorkerPool._get builds, [(rank, exitcode), ...]. The rerun gets a fresh pool because the dist_workers* fixtures are function-scoped and get_live_pool replaces a broken pool.
  • The test edits are justified. test_example_run_command.py follows the removed in-helper retry, and the reruns replace the removed Blackwell skips.

Bot review (bedrock-claude-opus-5-5) — DM the bot to share feedback.

Nudge: I found no confirmed regression. A person still has to sign off on the new MPL-2.0 test dependency, and I couldn't verify the plugin behaviour that every test's failure path now relies on.

Needs action:

  • Get @NVIDIA/modelopt-setup-codeowners to sign off on adding pytest-rerunfailures~=16.7 (MPL-2.0) to dev-test in pyproject.toml, as CONTRIBUTING.md requires for non-permissive licences.
  • Fix the stale docstring of test_output_layer_extra_state_empty_when_nothing_quantized in tests/gpu_megatron/torch/quantization/plugins/test_megatron.py. It still says test_homogeneous_compressed_sharded_state_dict is skipped on Blackwell, but this PR removes that skip.
  • Confirm that pytest-rerunfailures 16.7 accepts a mix of exception classes and regex strings in the only_rerun marker kwarg (tests/conftest.py rerun loop). I couldn't check this against the plugin source. If it's wrong, every failing test errors in the report hook.
  • Consider noting in the PR description that worker-pool failures embed each rank's traceback.format_exc(). The only_rerun patterns therefore still match frame source lines, which is what the "matching fix" section says it avoids.

No action needed:

  • The test edits are justified. test_example_run_command.py follows the removed in-helper retry, and the removed Blackwell skips are replaced by the rerun.
  • All changed files are under tests/ or are config, so the PR has no size concern.

Pensieve nudge review using chenhany's profile (revision 7).

Nudge: the requested commit differs from the supplied snapshot, and licensing sign-off and integration verification remain outstanding.

Needs action:

  • Supply the requested base-to-ce71e35bf52789206e08839e55f8b739baab7f55 snapshot, or confirm that supplied head 9617ed510e27f827df6c553ddb5a7da8fa1894f0 is the intended review target.
  • Obtain setup-codeowner licensing sign-off for pytest-rerunfailures, continuing review 5679480614; canonical header matching also remains unverified.
  • Add committed pytest integration coverage for retry limits, wrapped exceptions, non-transient failures, and worker eligibility; the supplied unit test checks classification, while integration checks are reported only as throwaway tests.
  • Confirm current-target CI results and repository requirements, utility reuse, and removed retry-parameter callers; navigation and execution are unavailable.

No action needed:

  • ✔️ The supplied snapshot addresses the duplicated GPU check, worker eligibility, fallback removal, mixed-exit-code regex, and removal TODO. The plugin-version reply specifically explains the required API support.
  • Existing test edits are justified by moving retries into pytest; removed skips restore coverage.
  • Reviewer: Codex (GPT-6). Inspected supplied diff 7c3c8680284722d21856ba83baa4cd8b785fe027 → 9617ed510e27f827df6c553ddb5a7da8fa1894f0. Duplicate checking used bounded supplied history. No new concrete defect identified.

If it was me, I would make the transient error checking using log markers + gpu type + possibly other test runtime config, so we can remove the hardcoded blackwell specific stuff. But non-blocking.
