Description

The "Install the isaaccapture pip package" steps in Quick Start and Build from Source said to activate a virtual environment but never showed how to create one. On Ubuntu 24.04 the system Python is externally managed, so a reader without a venv gets:

  • pip install ...: error: externally-managed-environment
  • uv pip install ...: error: No virtual environment found

Both steps now create and activate one with uv before installing:

uv venv --python 3.11 --seed .venv
source .venv/bin/activate
  • --seed puts pip in the venv. A uv venv has none by default, so plain pip falls through to /usr/bin/pip and fails with externally-managed-environment again. Build from Source keeps its pip install command, and isaaccapture's own missing-extra errors suggest pip install.
  • Quick Start: the stable install switches from pip install to uv pip install, matching the pre-release commands. The page links to the existing uv setup in Build from Source. It also notes that conda base does not work as an existing environment, because uv treats it as a system Python and refuses it. Readers are reminded to re-activate the venv in each new terminal.
  • Build from Source step 4: the venv uses the build's Python version (3.11 by default).
  • references/build.rst: both install sections say to use a venv, and the wheel section links to step 4.

Type of change

  • Bug fix (non-breaking change which fixes an issue)
  • New feature (non-breaking change which adds functionality)
  • Breaking change (fix or feature that would cause existing functionality to change)
  • Documentation update

Testing

  • Ubuntu 24.04 x86_64 (externally managed system Python 3.12), uv 0.12.5. Clean shell for each run, with VIRTUAL_ENV and CONDA_PREFIX unset.
    • On main, both errors above reproduce.
    • With this change, the Quick Start commands were run as written. Inside the venv, pip is the venv's own, and the pre-release install resolves against the NVIDIA index.
    • Build from Source step 4 was run as written against a stand-in X.Y+local wheel in ./install/wheels/. Both the pip and uv pip commands install into .venv, not the system Python.
    • The steps also work when done in sequence: Quick Start first, then Build from Source in the same clone.
    • Without --seed, pip inside the activated venv resolves to /usr/bin/pip and fails with externally-managed-environment.
    • In simulated conda environments, uv pip install fails in base and works in a named one.
  • make current-docs in docs/: build succeeded with no warnings.
  • SKIP=check-copyright-year pre-commit run --all-files: passed.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Documentation
    • Updated build and installation guides to clarify that locally built wheels must be installed with the Python version used to build them.
    • Added instructions for creating and activating a seeded Python 3.11 virtual environment with uv before installing packages.
    • Clarified virtual environment requirements for pip on Ubuntu 24.04, including how to use an existing virtual environment or non-base conda environment.
    • Updated stable-package installation steps to use uv pip.

The Quick Start and Build from Source install steps said to activate a
virtual environment but never showed how to create one. On Ubuntu 24.04
the system Python is externally managed, so pip install fails with
externally-managed-environment and uv pip install with "No virtual
environment found".

Both steps now create and activate .venv with uv. --seed puts pip in the
venv; without it, plain pip falls through to the system pip and fails
the same way. The Quick Start installs with uv pip, notes that conda
base is not a valid target for uv, and points to the uv setup in Build
from Source. references/build.rst points its install sections at the
venv step.

The documentation updates explain virtual environment requirements for wheel and source installations. The teleoperation quick start adds uv setup commands, options for existing environments, and a stable-package installation command using uv pip.

Let's do some follow up PR to switch everything to use uv run. It's actually OK to always require uv nowadays.

see Isaac Lab as examples:
https://isaac-sim.github.io/IsaacLab/main/source/isaaclab/quickstart.html

The isaaccapture wheel installs only on the Python it was built for, and
a build can target 3.12 or 3.13 through ISAAC_TELEOP_PYTHON_VERSION.
Say in the code block to replace 3.11 with that version, so a reader who
copies the command does not create a venv the wheel cannot install into.
