Lets Claude Code (or any MCP client) work with the SSH servers saved in noxed. Credentials never leave the main process, and nothing runs until the user approves it.

What's in it

  • MCP server (src/main/ipc/mcp/): Streamable HTTP JSON-RPC on 127.0.0.1 only, tools only, no SSE. Requests need a bearer token kept in the OS keychain (saveAppSecret/getAppSecret), compared with timingSafeEqual. Requests with a non-loopback Host or a web Origin are refused (DNS rebinding).
  • Tools: list_connections, run_command, list_directory, read_file. Commands and reads open their own SSH connection through connectSessionClient and are closed afterwards.
  • Approvals: each command or read shows a prompt in noxed: Deny (focused by default), Allow for this session, or Allow once. An unanswered prompt is denied after 2 minutes. While noxed is locked, every tool call is refused, and approvals other than Deny are rejected.
  • Hard refusals: blockedShellCommandReason in security.ts always refuses a short list of destructive commands (rm -rf /, mkfs, shutdown, …). execCapture moved into sshClients.ts and is now shared with Docker.
  • Settings: a Claude Code section shows a toggle, the status, a copyable claude mcp add command and a "New token" button. mcpEnabled and mcpPort can only be changed through their own lock-checked handlers; generic settings:set refuses them.
  • lib/requestQueue.ts: shared queue helpers, now used by both the host-key prompt and the MCP prompt.

Also

  • fix: writeChunks (DB export) now waits for the write stream to close before removing its temp file. Under load, a size-cap failure could leave a .partial file behind (seen as a flaky database.test.ts).

Testing

  • Unit tests cover the server (auth, Host/Origin checks, batches, notifications, body limit), approvals (timeout, ownership, lock, session grants), the tools (validation, blocked commands), the IPC handlers, the Settings section and the approval prompt.
  • tsc passes for the node and web projects, and all 1634 tests pass.

…emp file

createWriteStream opens its file asynchronously, so when the size cap
tripped before the open finished, the .partial file appeared after rm
had already run and was left beside the export.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The change adds a Claude Code MCP integration that exposes saved SSH connections, command execution, and remote file access through a loopback server. It adds approval prompts, Security settings controls, and supporting documentation. A separate change adjusts temporary-file cleanup after database write failures.

Changes

Claude Code MCP integration

Layer / File(s) Summary
MCP settings and secret storage
src/main/ipc/settings.ts, src/main/ipc/keychain.ts, src/main/ipc/__tests__/settings.handlers.test.ts
MCP settings default to disabled and use main-process storage. Application secrets use keychain entries prefixed with app:. Generic settings updates reject MCP keys, and reset preserves them.
Loopback MCP protocol and HTTP server
src/main/ipc/mcp/mcpServer.ts, src/main/ipc/mcp/__tests__/mcpServer.test.ts
The server handles MCP JSON-RPC requests over loopback HTTP. It checks bearer tokens, host and origin, routes, methods, and request body size.
Approval requests and decisions
src/main/ipc/mcp/mcpApprovals.ts, src/main/ipc/mcp/__tests__/mcpApprovals.test.ts
Approval requests require an unlocked app and an available window. Decisions can apply once or to a session. Requests time out after two minutes.
SSH tools and command execution
src/main/ipc/mcp/mcpTools.ts, src/main/ipc/security.ts, src/main/ipc/sshClients.ts, src/main/ipc/sftp.ts, src/main/ipc/docker.ts, src/main/ipc/__tests__/security.test.ts, src/main/ipc/__tests__/docker.test.ts, src/main/ipc/mcp/__tests__/mcpTools.test.ts
The MCP tools list connections, run approved commands, and list or read remote files over SFTP. Command checks block selected destructive patterns. Shared SSH execution and SFTP functions support these operations; Docker command collection also uses the shared SSH execution function.
MCP lifecycle and application bridge
src/main/ipc/mcp/mcp.ts, src/main/index.ts, src/preload/index.ts, src/preload/index.d.ts, src/main/ipc/mcp/__tests__/mcp.test.ts
The main process registers MCP handlers and starts the server when the saved setting enables it. The preload API exposes status, settings, connection details, token regeneration, and approval events.
Security settings and approval prompts
src/renderer/src/components/Settings/McpSection.tsx, src/renderer/src/components/Settings/Settings.tsx, src/renderer/src/components/Settings/Toggle.tsx, src/renderer/src/components/Mcp/McpApprovalPrompt.tsx, src/renderer/src/App.tsx, src/renderer/src/lib/requestQueue.ts, src/renderer/src/components/HostKeys/HostKeyPrompt.tsx, src/renderer/src/__tests__/harness.tsx, src/renderer/src/components/Settings/__tests__/*, src/renderer/src/components/Mcp/__tests__/*, src/renderer/src/lib/__tests__/requestQueue.test.ts, docs/features.html, docs/security.html
Security settings show MCP status and the setup command, with controls to enable access and regenerate its token. The app queues and displays approval requests. Documentation describes MCP setup and security behavior.

Database temporary-file cleanup

Layer / File(s) Summary
Write failure cleanup
src/main/ipc/database.ts
After a write failure, cleanup waits for the stream to close before removing the temporary file and rethrowing the original error.

MCP access can remain difficult to stop, and a command or file read may run after access is disabled. The destructive-command safeguard also misses nested commands. Resolve these issues before merging.

site:nodejs.org/docs/latest-v20.x/api/http.html server.close closes idle connections closeAllConnections active connections

💡 Result:

For **Node.js v20**, `server.close()` stops accepting new connections and closes idle connections; active connections are allowed to finish. The v20 docs note idle connections are closed automatically by `server.close()` starting in **v19.0.0**. ([nodejs.org](https://nodejs.org/download/v8-canary/v20.0.0-v8-canary20230121d7063b9dab/docs/api/http.html?utm_source=openai))

`server.closeAllConnections()` is the forceful option: it closes active as well as idle HTTP(S) connections. Use it after `server.close()` to avoid a race with newly accepted connections. ([nodejs.org](https://nodejs.org/download/v8-canary/v20.0.0-v8-canary20230121d7063b9dab/docs/api/http.html?utm_source=openai))

Force-close active MCP connections during shutdown.

Node 20 closes idle keep-alive connections when server.close() runs. An active connection can still delay the callback. readBody() has no timeout, so a client can keep an in-flight request open indefinitely. The old server also retains its old token until that connection closes.

Cancel pending approvals when MCP stops.

stop() clears only session grants. A request waiting in requestApproval() remains in pending. If the MCP client closes its socket, server.close() can complete while respond() continues. A later renderer approval can then start an SSH command or file read after mcp:setEnabled(false) has completed.

Cancel every pending approval before awaiting server.close(). Closing the HTTP connection and clearing future session grants do not cancel existing tool requests.

…ck inside command substitutions

- Turning MCP off or locking noxed denies every waiting approval and
forgets session grants, so a late answer can't act afterwards.
keychain gains onLock() so manual and auto-lock both notify.
- A prompt whose window closes or reloads is denied instead of hanging
  until the timeout.
- stop() ends open connections so close() can't be held by a request.
- The destructive-command guard now checks the insides of $(...),
backticks and subshells, and looks past exec/nohup/time/{ prefixes.
