Pull in upstream template changes

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Developer Experience
    • The development container supports workspace mounts at either the standard location or /workspaces, depending on how the workspace is mounted.
    • Workspace mount settings are detected when the container starts, with a fallback to the standard location when volume mounting is unavailable.
    • Development container extensions and CI tooling now use updated, pinned versions.
    • XML formatting checks now skip .wxs files.

Retarget the devcontainer workspace bind mount via WORKSPACE_MOUNT_TARGET
so it works when VS Code clones the repo into a Docker volume.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The devcontainer setup now detects whether /workspaces is a volume and configures the workspace mount target. Tooling and extension versions are updated, and the xml-formatter hook excludes .wxs files. These changes are reflected in the generated template.

Changes

Development environment and template

Layer / File(s) Summary
Detect and configure workspace mounts
.devcontainer/initialize-command.sh, template/.devcontainer/initialize-command.sh, .devcontainer/docker-compose.yml, template/.devcontainer/docker-compose.yml.jinja, .gitignore, template/.gitignore, .devcontainer/devcontainer.json, .config/.copier-answers.yml
The startup scripts set WORKSPACE_MOUNT_TARGET=/workspaces when inspection reports a volume. Otherwise, they clear .devcontainer/.env. The Compose files use the variable when set and otherwise use their default workspace paths. Both ignore files exclude .devcontainer/.env. The devcontainer context hash and recorded Copier commit are updated.
Pin tooling and update extensions
.devcontainer/install-ci-tooling.py, extensions/context.py, template/.devcontainer/install-ci-tooling.py.jinja, .devcontainer/devcontainer.json, template/.devcontainer/devcontainer.json.jinja
The installer and context hook specify pinned versions for pre-commit, identify, and Task. The CodeRabbit, Claude Code, and Ruff extension pins are updated in the repository and template.
Exclude Windows Installer files from XML formatting
.pre-commit-config.yaml, template/.pre-commit-config.yaml
The xml-formatter hook excludes .wxs files.

Priority: ⬇️ Low

Change: Feature

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 1ff6a

Clone Repository in Container Volume can mount the repository at the wrong target. Correct the mount detection before merging.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 1ff6a

No new security exposure is demonstrated. The proposed clone-in-volume startup path may not select the intended mount, and behavior after an interrupted or repeated startup remains uncertain.

Retained concerns

  • Low · reliability · inferred: The new clone-in-volume mount mode depends on HOSTNAME identifying a container with a volume at /workspaces. If initialization runs on the host without that identity, inspection silently fails and Compose retains the old mount destination, so the intended volume-startup transition is not established.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The changed mount selection affects development workspaces produced by this repository and its template. The inspected changes do not establish wider service, tenant, or production-data exposure.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • inferred — The mount decision trusts Docker inspection of HOSTNAME to characterize the workspace. The evidence does not establish that this identity denotes the cloned-volume container when initialization executes.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Installer subprocess failures stop later installation steps, but the source does not define cleanup or reconciliation for a partially installed or previously installed pre-commit tool environment.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Validate clone-in-volume startup against the actual initialization identity and Compose destination, including failed inspection and repeated startup; verify that a reused pre-commit installation acquires the newly pinned identify dependency.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy lift

Use the clone workflow’s container identity instead of host HOSTNAME.

initializeCommand runs on the host before the dev container is created. The Clone Repository in Container Volume workflow does not run this command inside its bootstrap container, so $HOSTNAME does not identify the container that owns /workspaces. If docker inspect finds no matching container, the script leaves WORKSPACE_MOUNT_TARGET unset. Compose then uses /workspaces/copier-python-package-template instead of /workspaces, which can break the documented clone-in-volume workflow. Use a host-side identifier or signal provided by the clone workflow.
