Pull in upstream changes

Tested in downstream repo

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Improvements
    • Development environments now support flexible workspace mounting and updated tools.
    • Dependency setup better handles package directories, lockfile-only generation, and Task availability.
    • SSM plugin setup checks the installed version and updates it when it falls below the required minimum.
    • CI summaries identify which jobs failed, and Docker image tagging is limited to the default branch.
  • Bug Fixes
    • YAML validation now accepts multi-document files, and XML formatting skips Windows installer files.
    • Dependency installation no longer skips Playwright.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The pull request updates Claude instructions, devcontainer initialization and tool installation, package workflows, and CI configuration. It applies corresponding changes to the Copier template and updates several tool and action versions.

Changes

Repository and template maintenance

Layer / File(s) Summary
Claude instructions and permissions
.claude/*, .config/.copier-answers.yml, .config/.copier-managed-files.json, template/.claude/*
Permission rules now use Edit patterns. The PR-comment skill specifies Skill calls for issue creation and TDD phases when behavior can be tested. The Claude instruction files are deleted, and Copier tracking is updated.
Devcontainer mount configuration
.devcontainer/initialize-command.sh, .devcontainer/docker-compose.yml, .devcontainer/devcontainer.json, .gitignore, template/.devcontainer/initialize-command.sh, template/.devcontainer/docker-compose.yml.jinja, template/.devcontainer/devcontainer.json.jinja, template/.gitignore
Initialization writes WORKSPACE_MOUNT_TARGET=/workspaces when the container’s /workspaces mount is a volume. Compose uses that target with a default path. Devcontainer extension versions change, and generated environment and lock files are ignored.
Devcontainer tool installation
.devcontainer/install-ci-tooling.py, template/.devcontainer/install-ci-tooling.py.jinja
The scripts install Task through uv and install uv independently of the Python setup option. They detect the SSM plugin version, install it if missing or below the minimum, and verify the resulting version.
Package installation and lock generation
.devcontainer/manual-setup-deps.py, .github/actions/install_deps/action.yml, .github/workflows/ci.yaml, .github/workflows/pre-commit.yaml, README.md, template/.devcontainer/manual-setup-deps.py, template/.github/actions/install_deps/action.yml, template/.github/workflows/pre-commit.yaml, template/README.md.jinja
The dependency action selects the pnpm project directory for version resolution and lockfile caching. Lock generation uses pnpm’s --lockfile-only option. The listed package-installation commands no longer set SKIP_PLAYWRIGHT_INSTALL.
CI workflows and tool configuration
.github/reusable_workflows/build-docker-image.yaml, .github/workflows/ci.yaml, .github/actions/install_deps/action.yml, .github/actions/pulumi_ephemeral_deploy/action.yml, .pre-commit-config.yaml, .config/pyrefly.toml, extensions/context.py, pyproject.toml, template/.github/workflows/ci.yaml.jinja, template/.github/actions/pulumi_ephemeral_deploy/action.yml, template/.pre-commit-config.yaml, template/.config/pyrefly.toml
The CI summary checks all job results, and Docker image SHA tagging runs only on the default branch. Action, dependency, and tool versions change. Pre-commit and Pyrefly configuration also changes.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to f497a

The changes affect developer-tooling trust and workspace startup rather than establishing a production service redesign. The existing mutable-action-reference finding remains, but inspected workflow permissions and cloud role-selection controls are not expanded. Cloud trust policies and downstream caller exposure remain unverified.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — A compromised Task distribution could execute with the installing developer or CI runner's authority and affect subsequent steps. Adoption can propagate through generated projects, but exposure is per adopting environment and its granted credentials, not an established fleet-wide or tenant-wide compromise. The known CI configuration includes OIDC-enabled jobs and repository-write jobs, making job-specific authority relevant.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • observed — The retained low-severity finding concerns mutable third-party action tags in the image-build workflow. Base-to-head inspection shows the same tag-based trust condition and upstream owners already existed, with no evidenced expansion of workflow inputs, permissions, or publication authority. Git-SHA publication is instead restricted to the default branch. The finding remains relevant, but is not classified as a newly introduced PR architecture concern.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The Pulumi workflow crosses from GitHub OIDC authority to caller-selected AWS roles and grants id-token, contents, and pull-request write permissions. Repository source exposes the role-assumption path but does not establish authorized triggering callers, AWS OIDC subject restrictions, or attached role privileges. The credential update does not itself change the visible role/account boundary; its maximum AWS exposure remains unresolved.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — The existing final Pulumi destroy is a normal subsequent step rather than unconditional cleanup. Failure or cancellation after partial deployment can therefore leave resources and their associated exposure active despite ordinary-run mutex serialization. This lifecycle gap predates the PR; backend ownership, interrupted-operation recovery, and resulting resource exposure remain unverified.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Pin the privileged image-build action dependencies to reviewed immutable commits to reduce the existing mutable-reference trust exposure.
  • proposed — Before broad template adoption, establish an explicit provenance policy for the new Task distributor. An exact package version and a recorded downloaded hash should not be treated as proof that the executable matches an independently approved upstream release.

Do not treat Docker inspection failure as a non-volume workspace.

In both initialization scripts, a failed docker inspect is suppressed. The empty result then truncates .devcontainer/.env, so Compose uses its default bind-mount target instead of /workspaces. This can make the container-volume workflow use the wrong workspace.

Make Docker inspection available in the bootstrap container, or use a reliable bootstrap-provided mount signal. Do not clear the override after an inspection error.

Feels like overkill. If it fails we likely have other issues with running the devcontainer than this right?

@zendern If Docker is unavailable, yes—the devcontainer will likely fail for other reasons.

But docker inspect "$HOSTNAME" can also fail when Docker works, because $HOSTNAME is not guaranteed to identify the container to the Docker daemon. In that case, the script silently treats an unknown mount type as a non-volume mount.

I overstated the severity and the scope of the suggested fix. A bootstrap redesign is not justified by the evidence here. At most, I would suggest a warning on inspection failure so the fallback is visible. I would not block this PR on that change.
