None. Found while pushing a branch for the CI path-classes work: every lint-matrix leg fails since pyrefly 1.4.0 landed on PyPI on 2026-10-15 at 16:53 UTC. Main's last run (13:41 UTC) was green; its next run will not be.

Why is this change necessary?

The template pins pyrefly>=1.3.2 with no ceiling and lint-matrix resolves fresh, so pyrefly 1.4.0's new checks apply to every rendered project at once. Two of them hit template code:

  • method-assign on app.openapi = partial(custom_openapi, app)
  • unknown-attribute-access on the four pywin32 calls in win_service.py (projects with install_as_windows_service)

How does this change address the issue?

  • The app.openapi assignment is FastAPI's documented way to install a custom schema generator. The app comes from FastAPIOffline, which is a factory returning a plain FastAPI, so there is no class to subclass and override openapi() on; a subclass attempt fails at import. The precomputed-schema alternative (app.openapi_schema = ...) would change when the schema is built and tie it to route registration order. Suppressed with an explanatory comment.
  • win_service.py gets real types through the types-pywin32 stubs, added to the dev group under the same install_as_windows_service condition as pywin32 itself. With the base class typed, the unknown-attribute-access errors disappear, the import suppressions gain missing-source (the stubs exist on Linux while the package does not), and SvcRun takes @override.

Deliberately no pyrefly ceiling.

What side effects does this change have?

Projects that take this update must move to pyrefly 1.4.0 at the same time: under 1.3.x the new method-assign suppression is reported as unused, and @override on SvcRun is a bad-override without the stubs. A project's own code may need its own 1.4.0 fixes on top.

How do we know this works?

Projects rendered from this commit with data4.yaml (Windows service on) and data5.yaml (executable, no service) were dependency-resolved from scratch, picked up pyrefly 1.4.0, and type-check with 0 errors. The same edits were also tried on a downstream project's identical copies under both 1.3.2 and 1.4.0 with the stubs present: clean on both, and the @override alone (without stubs) is the bad-override the side-effects section describes. The lint-matrix job repeats the rendered-project check for all five data files.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Chores
    • Improved development-time type support for projects configured to run as Windows services.
    • Updated internal maintenance and test setup. These changes do not alter application behavior or the existing error-handling scenarios.

pyrefly 1.4.0 (released today) adds method-assign and unknown-attribute-access checks, and the template pins pyrefly with no ceiling, so every project rendered by CI now fails.

- app.openapi = partial(custom_openapi, app) is FastAPI's documented way of installing a custom schema generator; the app comes from FastAPIOffline, a factory that returns a plain FastAPI, so there is no class to subclass. Suppressed with a comment.
- win_service.py subclasses pywin32's untyped ServiceFramework. The types-pywin32 stubs now type it on every platform: unknown-attribute-access goes away, the import suppressions gain missing-source (the stubs exist on Linux, the package does not), and SvcRun carries @OverRide because the base class is now known. The stubs ship in the dev group only when install_as_windows_service is set, like pywin32 itself.

📝 Walkthrough

The backend template adds a Windows service typing dependency, updates type-checking annotations and a FastAPI comment, and changes how exception-handler tests pass a mocking fixture to a helper.

Changes: Backend updates

Layer / File(s) Summary
Windows service typing and FastAPI comment
template/{% if has_backend %}backend{% endif %}/pyproject.toml.jinja, template/{% if has_backend %}backend{% endif %}/src/backend_api/entrypoint/{% if install_as_windows_service %}win_service.py{% endif %}, template/{% if has_backend %}backend{% endif %}/src/backend_api/fast_api_exception_handlers.py
The dev dependency group adds types-pywin32 when Windows service installation is enabled. The service imports add Pyrefly ignores, and AppService.SvcRun gains @override. A FastAPI comment changes; its assignment remains unchanged.
Exception test helper fixture
template/{% if has_backend %}backend{% endif %}/tests/unit/{% if backend_uses_graphql %}test_strawberry_exception_handler.py{% endif %}
The helper takes mocker as a keyword-only argument. Test calls pass the fixture explicitly. The tested scenarios and assertions remain unchanged.

ruff exempts @OverRide methods from N802, so the directive became an RUF100 error.

…ubclass fixture set it

pyrefly 1.4.0 reports the class-level `mocker: MockerFixture` declaration as never initialized, which is accurate: only the subclasses' autouse fixtures assign it. The helper now takes the fixture it needs.

Raise the generated Pyrefly minimum to 1.4.0.

pyrefly_version still defaults to >=1.3.2, so generated projects can resolve Pyrefly 1.3.x. That version reports ignore[method-assign] as unused, which makes the generated pyrefly check fail. Encode the stated 1.4.0 migration requirement in the generated dependency.

Suggested fix
-    context["pyrefly_version"] = ">=1.3.2"
+    context["pyrefly_version"] = ">=1.4.0"

If Pyrefly 1.3.x must remain supported, use a suppression compatible with that version instead.
