Link to Issue or Message thread

None. It came up while annotating a PR in a downstream repo.

Why is this change necessary?

The address-pr-comments skill can reply in an existing review thread (post-reply.py), but nothing posts a new inline comment on a PR's diff, for example to explain a hunk that reviewers would otherwise misread. Doing that with a raw gh api .../pulls/<n>/comments -f body='...' call is awkward: a body containing backticks or quotes needs careful shell quoting, and the call isn't covered by the skills allow-list, so it needs manual approval (or gets denied outright in auto mode).

How does this change address the issue?

  • Adds post-review-comment.py to the skill. It posts a new review comment on one line (--line) or a range (--start-line + --line) of a file in the PR's diff, on the new (--side RIGHT, default) or old (--side LEFT) side. The body is read from --body-file, and the commit defaults to the PR's current head, so line numbers match what GitHub shows rather than the local checkout. Owner and repo come from the git remote, as in post-reply.py.
  • Moves the steps both posting scripts share into utils.py, since pylint's duplicate-code check flagged the copies. post_via_gh_api(*, endpoint, body_file, string_fields=None, int_fields=None, timeout_msg) reads the body file, builds and runs the gh api <endpoint> --method POST call itself (string fields as --raw-field, integer fields such as line numbers as --field, so they go as JSON numbers), prints the new comment's URL and deletes the body file. Callers pass only the endpoint and fields, so the helper can only ever POST through gh api. post-reply.py and post-review-comment.py both call it.
  • post_via_gh_api treats a successful gh api call whose output is empty or not JSON as posted: it prints Posted: (unparsable response) and still deletes the body file. Before, json.loads raised first, leaving the body file behind for a retry that would post the comment twice (from review).
  • Adds the script to the copier tasks in copier.yaml and template/copier.yml.jinja-base that set the executable bit on the skill's scripts. The copier.yaml list also gains commit-link.py and verify-env.py: Make /address-pr-comment skill use the URL of the PR context #176 added those two to the template/copier.yml.jinja-base list only, so templates generated from this repo could lose their executable bit. Both lists now name the same scripts.
  • SKILL.md is deliberately unchanged for now, to see whether agents reach for the script on their own when they need it.

What side effects does this change have?

  • Downstream repos get one more script in .claude/skills/address-pr-comments/.
  • post-reply.py is restructured onto the shared helpers. Its arguments, messages and exit codes are unchanged, except that an unparsable success response now prints the placeholder URL and deletes the body file instead of exiting with a traceback.

Test plan

  • Manual, in a downstream repo: posted a multi-line review comment on an open PR with post-review-comment.py, without a permission prompt, and checked it on GitHub. That confirmed the head-commit default and the range (GitHub only accepts a range inside a single diff hunk). --side LEFT and --commit-id were not exercised.
  • post_via_gh_api was run locally from a scratch script with gh api output stubbed as non-JSON, empty, and a JSON body: the first two print the placeholder URL, the third the real one, and all three delete the body file.

Other

  • Generated templates now get the executable bit on commit-link.py and verify-env.py.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added support for posting inline pull request comments, including multi-line ranges and automatic use of the pull request’s latest commit when no commit is specified.
    • Reports errors when comment details are invalid, pull request information cannot be retrieved, or a comment cannot be posted.
  • Documentation
    • Updated the pull request template to ask what each verification establishes, whether it was checked against broken or reverted code, and what remains unverified.
    • Clarified that rerunning CI suites only counts as verification when CI cannot cover the relevant environment.

post-review-comment.py posts a new review comment on one line or a range of lines in a PR's diff, with the body read from a file and the commit defaulting to the PR's head. Like post-reply.py, it runs gh api from a skills script so the call is covered by the skills allow-list instead of needing approval each time. Also adds it to the copier tasks that set the executable bit on the skill's scripts.

📝 Walkthrough

Adds a shared helper for posting pull-request comments, a command for inline review comments, and executable-permission setup for the command. The reply command uses the shared helper. The pull request template now asks for verification evidence and uncovered cases.

Changes: Comment posting

Layer / File(s) Summary
Shared comment posting
.claude/skills/address-pr-comments/utils.py, .claude/skills/address-pr-comments/post-reply.py
utils.py reads the body file and posts through gh api, reports failures, prints a response URL or fallback, and attempts to delete the body file after a successful post. post-reply.py uses this helper for inline replies and top-level comments.
Inline comment command
.claude/skills/address-pr-comments/post-review-comment.py, copier.yaml, template/copier.yml.jinja-base
The command parses comment arguments, validates ranged comments, resolves the PR head SHA when no commit ID is supplied, and posts through the shared helper. The executable-permission setup includes the new script.

Verification prompt

Layer / File(s) Summary
Verification questions
.github/pull_request_template.md
Replaces “Test plan” with “How do we know this works?” and asks what verification establishes, whether tests were observed failing with broken or reverted code, and what remains uncovered.

A closed output pipe could leave a posted comment’s body file behind and lead to a duplicate on retry. The PR template also overstates which checks run. Both are bounded issues to address or explicitly accept before merging.

Comment thread .claude/skills/address-pr-comments/post-review-comment.py Outdated
…ent scripts

post-reply.py and post-review-comment.py both read the comment body from a file, post it with gh api, print the new comment's URL and delete the body file. pylint's duplicate-code check flagged the copies, so both now call read_body_file and post_via_gh_api in utils.py. post-reply.py's output and exit codes are unchanged.
…nerated templates

The copier task in copier.yaml listed only check-footer.py, fetch-pr-comments.py and post-reply.py. When commit-link.py and verify-env.py were added (#176), only the list in template/copier.yml.jinja-base was updated, so templates generated from this repo could lose the executable bit on those two. Both lists now name the same scripts.
…the body file

Once gh api exits successfully the comment exists. If its output was empty or not JSON, json.loads raised before the body file was deleted, and a retry would post the comment again. post_via_gh_api now prints a placeholder URL in that case and carries on with the cleanup, for both post-reply.py and post-review-comment.py.
post_via_gh_api took a ready-made command, so each caller repeated gh api <endpoint> --method POST and the helper could have been handed any command at all. It now takes the endpoint and the fields to send, reads the body file itself, and builds the POST, so it can only post through gh api. String fields go as --raw-field and integer fields (line numbers) as --field, which sends them as JSON numbers.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Delete the body file before writing to stdout.

If the stdout pipe closes after a successful POST, sys.stdout.write can raise BrokenPipeError. The body file then remains, so a retry can post the comment again. Attempt deletion before printing the result. (docs.python.org)

Do not state that CI reruns every suite on every push.

CI starts on most pushes, but unit-test and lint-matrix depend on pre-commit and can be skipped when that job fails. Update the prompt to distinguish workflow triggering from suite execution.
