so I'd like a little help hoping to get this running

so I've successfully got a server running using your void repository available here as a docker image https://hub.docker.com/r/greghib/void/

however when trying to use one of your pre-built clients here, all I get is the black screen and a "loading please wait" while it checks for updates and freezes at 1%.

Am I doing something wrong here? I've tried building your client from scratch using ./gradlew shadowJar however I get build failed to failure to locate installation on my machine, have I got too many java versions on my machine and need to nuke them all?

I feel like getting the client working is harder then the server, that or the issue is staring me in the face and I'm just stupid. Is it because I have the server running on its own dedicated box? I assume the client is trying to connect to the server on localhost to get "updates" from it.

Hey! Yep your assumption is correct the client points to localhost but docker runs things in an isolated way and doesn't expose anything to the "outside world" i.e. your local computer unless you tell it to.

You'll need to make sure docker is exposing port 43594 by running with a command like docker run -p 43594:43594 void or use the provided dockerfile/compose files which use EXPOSE 43594/tcp

It also seems if you're running with docker desktop you'll have to manually provide the host port in the "Optional settings" as (annoyingly) by default it'll select a random one

I'm actually using Unraid on the dedicated box, Unraid allowed me to install the Docker image and most of the time they usually work, some like this one do require a little bit of tweaking however to get things functioning correctly, like for instance on Unraid unless you set a container path you can't see the file structure or any potential config files.

(this is just an example, I know its wrong because I do not know where the server is saved to)

I've forwarded the port assigned via "container port" however I am not sure if its working at all. I guess I have to figure out a way to point the client to my box if that is at all possible?

Yeah you can pass -ip if you run it with command line i.e. java -jar void-client.jar -ip 127.0.0.1, that'll be fine for testing and ofc longer term you'd want to rebuild the client with your IP in it

I am wondering if I can simply turn this into a bat file in future, and pass this around even to my friends (of course using my open IP) and it should function just the same, thanks!

now the second problem, trying to find where on earth on unraid the server files saved so I can mess around with configuration and then set containerpath so I can see them.

also got the slight issue that while I'm modifying the container on unraid to try and find where the files are saved too it wipes my saves because it deletes the container, oof. Hence finding out where its actually installing the container too (for example, a steamcmd container is usually in something like this)

Building your own jar would be the best bet, the client has to be build with java 8 (cause of an old dep on sun java) which looks like the issue you were running into before.

Yeah you'll want to mount a volume where the player saves are, an example: https://github.com/GregHib/void/blob/543c97d36adb8b786bae78d73f9c6d1557e4652c/docker-compose.yml#L5-L6

i apologize this isn't really a client thing anymore, more of a server issue now. I've found that according to opening a console on the container and typing "pwd" that the files are being stored in "/app" so I tried to setup a mount for that so i could see the files for example this is what I did

however now the server won't start at all. Removing this path makes it so the server can start up again.

The error in the log. I can now see that its looking in "/app/./data/cache/main etc etc etc"

according to unraid, this is what it is in the directory. Two Folders that are simply named "." and ".." a data folder, and the void-server.jar

now I wonder where the game.properties file is so I can modify settings such as potentially xp gain rates and what not?

Hey sorry didn't see these, the issue were were running into is missing the /data/cache folder which should contain the game asset cache.

You can just use the data folder from one of the server release zip, and then add the cache to the designated folder as specified in the quick setup.
