🎯 Goal

Fix three e2e flakes on CI, and cover the reaction authors sheet:

  1. Video seeding (iOS 26.2). The test runner saves a video to the simulator's photo library, which shows a permission prompt on iOS 26.2. When the prompt isn't answered in time, the save times out, the prompt is dismissed as "Don't Allow", and every retry fails with PHPhotosErrorDomain Code=3311 (access denied). This hit UIKit's test_userUploadsVideo (#4337), and SwiftUI uses the same helper and CI matrix.
  2. Empty media picker. The media picker asks the app for full photo library access. When that alert isn't answered in time, XCTest dismisses it with "Don't Allow". The denial sticks for the rest of the job, so every later picker test sees an empty library (There are not enough photos in the picker, No matches … label BEGINSWITH "Video"), e.g. cron runs 38196670594 and 38611495935.
  3. Reactions sheet instead of message actions (iOS 17.5). test_userRemovesReactionUsingExtendedReactionsPicker fails every run on the 17.5 job (38839981091). openContextMenu long-presses the centre of the full-width message row, which for a short incoming message lands next to the top reactions badge. Before iOS 18 the message's long press isn't high priority (MessageActionsGestureModifier), so the badge takes presses within ~10–15pt of it and opens the reactions sheet. The moreReactions button never appears.
  4. Reaction authors coverage. The sheet is now checked for the user's own reaction and the participant's: it shows up after it's added and is gone after it's removed.

📝 Summary

  • Grant photo library access to the UI-test runner and the test app with simctl before the e2e tests run on CI
  • Fail fast with a clear message when photo library access is denied
  • Answer the media picker's "Allow Full Access" alert in the interruption monitor
  • Long-press messages away from their top reactions when opening the message actions
  • Extend the reaction tests to check the reaction authors sheet after adding and after removing a reaction

🛠 Implementation

  • New private lane allow_photo_library_access, called from test_e2e_mock. It finds the simulator for the device option, boots it (simctl privacy needs a booted simulator), and grants photos-add to io.getstream.iOS.StreamChatSwiftUITestsAppTests.xctrunner and photos to io.getstream.iOS.StreamChatSwiftUITestsApp. The grants work before the apps are installed and override an earlier denial.
    • A versioned device is matched with Gem::Version, like scan does. A device without a version gets the same pick scan makes.
    • The lane fails when the requested simulator doesn't exist, instead of letting scan fall back to another simulator without the grants. With no device it logs a warning and skips the grants (local runs).
  • PhotoLibrary.seedVideo only requests authorization when it's not determined yet, waits up to 15s for the prompt on local runs, and stops with a reset hint when access is denied instead of waiting for the save to time out.
  • StreamTestCase's interruption monitor taps "Allow Full Access" as well as "Allow", so a late prompt in a local run gets allowed instead of falling through to XCTest's default "Don't Allow".
  • New UserRobot.longPressMessageBubble(in:), used by both openContextMenu variants. When the message has top reactions, it presses at least 30pt below them; otherwise it keeps the centre press.
  • Reactions:
    • test_deletesReaction: the participant reacts first, so the sheet stays available. The user adds a reaction and sees "You" and the participant, then removes it and sees only the participant. This needs mock #88: the mock never filled own_reactions, so the sheet dropped the user's own row.
    • test_reactionAuthorsSheetIsShown_whenUserTapsOnReaction: mirrored, with the participant's reaction. The removal check is skipped for IOS-2191: the LLC keeps another user's removed reaction in the database, so the sheet still lists the participant.
    • UserRobot: closeReactionAuthors() (drags the sheet grabber down) and assertReactionAuthor(_:isPresent:).

🎨 Showcase

test_userRemovesReactionUsingExtendedReactionsPicker on iOS 17.5, iPhone 15 Pro:

Before After
The second long-press opens the "1 Reaction" sheet and the test fails The second long-press opens the message actions and the test passes

🧪 Manual Testing Notes

Verified locally against the mock server.

Photo library (iPhone 16 Pro, iOS 18.5):

  • Runner and app access granted with simctl: test_userUploadsVideo, test_deleteFile, test_deleteImage and test_uploadMultipleImages pass without a prompt.
  • Runner access revoked: test_userUploadsVideo fails in ~5s with the "Photo library access is denied" message.
  • App access revoked: test_uploadMultipleImages and test_userUploadsVideo fail exactly like CI (0 photos, no video tile).
  • App access reset and the robot's own alert handling disabled: the interruption monitor answers the prompt and the app ends up with full access.

Reactions long press:

  • Probe on iOS 17.5 after adding a reaction: presses on the badge and within ~10–15pt of it (including the top of the bubble) open the reactions sheet; presses ~25pt away open the message actions. On iOS 18.5 every point opens the message actions.
  • Reactions_Tests: 11/11 pass on iOS 17.5 (iPhone 15 Pro) and iOS 18.5 (iPhone 16 Pro). test_userRemovesReactionUsingExtendedReactionsPicker fails on 17.5 without this change.

Reaction authors sheet:

  • test_deletesReaction fails on the mock's main ("Reaction author You is not shown") and passes on mock Mixed media attachments have incorrect bubble  #88, on iOS 17.5 and 18.5.
  • test_reactionAuthorsSheetIsShown_whenUserTapsOnReaction passes its add checks and is skipped at the IOS-2191 removal check.

📝 Walkthrough

The mock E2E lane configures photo-library access for a selected simulator. UI tests handle permission prompts, verify add-only authorization before saving a video, target message long presses, and check reaction authors.

Changes: Photo-Library Access for UI Tests

Layer / File(s) Summary
Set up simulator photo access
fastlane/Fastfile, StreamChatSwiftUITestsAppTests/Tests/BaseTestCase/StreamTestCase.swift
The mock test lane selects and boots a compatible simulator, then grants photo-add access to the test runner and photo-library access to the app. The interruption monitor accepts either Allow or Allow Full Access.
Check photo-library authorization
StreamChatSwiftUITestsAppTests/Pages/PhotoLibrary.swift
The authorization helper returns the current status and requests access only when the status is .notDetermined. Video seeding fails and returns unless add-only access is .authorized.

Message and Reaction UI Tests

Layer / File(s) Summary
Target message bubble for long press
StreamChatSwiftUITestsAppTests/Robots/UserRobot+MessageActions.swift, StreamChatSwiftUITestsAppTests/Robots/UserRobot.swift
The context-menu action waits for the message bubble’s hit point and uses a helper to press the bubble. When reaction buttons are present, the helper targets a point below them, clamped within the bubble.
Verify reaction authors
StreamChatSwiftUITestsAppTests/Robots/UserRobot+Reactions.swift, StreamChatSwiftUITestsAppTests/Tests/Reactions+Extended_Tests.swift, StreamChatSwiftUITestsAppTests/Tests/Reactions_Tests.swift
The robot can close the reaction-author sheet and check whether an author is present or absent. Reaction tests check authors for reactions from two users. An added removal scenario is skipped.

The media picker's full-access prompt could be dismissed with "Don't Allow", leaving every later picker test with an empty library.

Fail the e2e lane when the requested simulator is unavailable.

allow_photo_library_access returns after logging when the requested simulator is missing. test_e2e_mock then continues to Scan, which can select a fallback simulator. test_userUploadsVideo can therefore run without the required photo-library grant.

@coderabbitai Fixed the outside-diff comment in 2e97e63: allow_photo_library_access now raises UI.user_error! when the requested simulator is missing, instead of letting scan fall back to another one. It also compares versions with Gem::Version (as scan does), so a runtime reported as 17.5.0 still matches 17.5.

@testableapple Verified in 2e97e635. allow_photo_library_access now stops with UI.user_error! when the requested simulator is missing. The Gem::Version comparison treats 17.5.0 and 17.5 as equal. This addresses the outside-diff finding. Thanks for the fix.

Learning: In GetStream/stream-chat-swiftui, `device:` is intentionally optional for the `test_e2e_mock` lane in `fastlane/Fastfile`. Both CI workflows supply it. Local runs without it skip the simulator photo-library grant and rely on `PhotoLibrary.seedVideo` in `StreamChatSwiftUITestsAppTests/Pages/PhotoLibrary.swift` to handle authorization or fail with a reset hint. Do not require `device:` solely to enforce the pre-test grant.

Before iOS 18 the message's long press isn't high priority, so a press near the top reactions opened the reactions sheet instead of the message actions.
