Part of FLU-825. Stacked on #3023 (FLU-826); review only the commits on top of it.

Message bubble width

  • StreamMessageItem defaulted maxWidth to 264 while StreamMessageItemProps defaulted it to 272. The list builds props directly, so it used 272, while anything built with the StreamMessageItem constructor, such as the long-press actions preview, was 8 pixels narrower. Both now default to 272.
  • 272 is Figma's bubble for an attachment: a 256 attachment with 8 of padding each side. Figma's text-only bubble is 264 (240 text + 12 + 12), but the bubble has one cap for both, and a 264 cap squeezes attachments to 248, which is what Compose does today.

Media grids

  • StreamMediaGallery (channel media, the viewer's "Photos & videos" sheet) and StreamPhotoGallery (the picker's gallery tab) always showed 3 tiles per row. On a wide screen the tiles grew to 300+ pt, and on iPhone Duo's inner display the middle column sat on the fold.
  • They now show 3 tiles per row below 600 wide, 4 below 840 and 6 from 840, with tiles filling the width. Phones keep the design's 3. The counts from 600 up are even, following Apple's iPhone Duo guidance: "In a grid-style layout, prefer an even number of columns so content divides cleanly."
  • Figma specifies a column count with tiles that fill the width (3 at 402 and at 412), not a tile size. The breakpoints are Material's width classes, and 3/4/6 matches the Android Compose SDK's ChannelMediaAttachmentsGrid.
  • StreamMediaGallery gains gridDelegate to change the layout, and crossAxisCount is deprecated, since one count no longer describes the grid. It still works.
  • defaultStreamPhotoGalleryDelegate now holds the adaptive grid and is declared as a SliverGridDelegate, so its type no longer follows the class behind it. The style guide now asks the same of every public default. Code that reads its crossAxisCount no longer compiles; the changelog points to SliverGridDelegateWithFixedCrossAxisCount for a fixed count.

Verified

  • On the iPhone Duo simulator: 3 tiles on the outer display, 4 on the inner display in portrait, and 6 in landscape, in channel media and the picker.
  • Tests cover the counts on each side of 600 and 840, the deprecated crossAxisCount, a custom gridDelegate, the assert against passing both, StreamPhotoGallery's default, and the two maxWidth defaults agreeing. Each fails when its behaviour is reverted.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Media galleries now adapt to available width, showing 3, 4, or 6 tiles per row on wider screens.
    • Gallery layouts can be customized with a grid delegate, while fixed tile counts remain available.
  • Updates
    • The default message content width increases from 264 to 272 logical pixels.
    • The gallery’s crossAxisCount option is deprecated in favor of gridDelegate; existing fixed-count layouts remain supported.

StreamMessageItem defaulted maxWidth to 264 while StreamMessageItemProps
defaulted it to 272. The message list builds props directly, so it used
272, while anything built with the StreamMessageItem constructor, such as
the long-press actions preview, was 8 pixels narrower.

272 is the width the design gives a bubble holding an attachment: a 256
attachment with 8 of padding on each side. A lower cap squeezes it.

StreamMediaGallery and StreamPhotoGallery always showed 3 tiles per row,
so a wide screen got huge tiles and, on a foldable's inner display, a
column straddling the fold. They now show 3 tiles per row when narrower
than 600, 4 when narrower than 840 and 6 otherwise. The counts from 600
up are even, so the tiles split evenly at a fold.

StreamMediaGallery gains a gridDelegate to change the layout, and its
crossAxisCount is deprecated, since one count no longer describes the
grid. defaultStreamPhotoGalleryDelegate keeps its 3-column layout but
is deprecated, as it is no longer the default.

📝 Walkthrough

The media galleries now support width-responsive tile counts and custom grid delegates. The message item default maxWidth changes from 264 to 272 logical pixels.

Changes: Gallery layout and message width

Layer / File(s) Summary
Gallery delegate selection
packages/stream_chat_flutter/lib/src/media_gallery/stream_media_gallery.dart, packages/stream_chat_flutter/test/src/media_gallery/stream_media_gallery_test.dart, packages/stream_chat_flutter/CHANGELOG.md
StreamMediaGallery accepts a custom gridDelegate or a deprecated fixed crossAxisCount, but not both. With neither option, it selects the adaptive delegate. Tests check responsive counts, fixed counts, a supplied delegate, and the assertion. The changelog records gallery options and related upcoming changes.
Adaptive grid layout
packages/stream_chat_flutter/lib/src/media_gallery/stream_media_grid_delegate.dart, packages/stream_chat_flutter/lib/src/scroll_view/photo_gallery/stream_photo_gallery.dart, packages/stream_chat_flutter/test/src/scroll_view/photo_gallery/stream_photo_gallery_test.dart, STYLE_GUIDE.md
The new delegate selects 3, 4, or 6 columns based on cross-axis extent. StreamPhotoGallery uses it by default, and a test checks the four-column layout at width 669. The style guide clarifies type annotations for public defaults.
Message width default
packages/stream_chat_flutter/lib/src/message_widget/stream_message_item.dart, packages/stream_chat_flutter/test/src/message_widget/stream_message_item_test.dart, migrations/redesign/message_widget.md, packages/stream_chat_flutter/CHANGELOG.md
StreamMessageItem now defaults to a maxWidth of 272 logical pixels. The test compares the widget and props defaults, and the migration entry and changelog document the new default.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — Within the reviewed media-gallery path, adaptive layout can change how many tiles are visible but does not expand the supplied attachment collection or confer additional media-loading authority. Custom delegates control geometry rather than replace the attachment item builder.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • inferred — Attachment content remains on the existing downstream rendering path rather than becoming an input to the new layout policy. This supports an unchanged boundary for the reviewed path; it does not establish that downstream loaders enforce channel authorization.

defaultStreamPhotoGalleryDelegate now holds the grid that shows more tiles
per row as it gets wider, instead of staying a deprecated three-column
delegate beside a new default. The grid docs describe that behaviour
rather than the breakpoints behind it.

Reviewed this layer on its own. The crossAxisCount deprecation is done well (behaviour preserved, assert against gridDelegate, changelog entry), and the delegate is small and reuses Flutter's fixed-count layout. A few comments inline.

nit: could we give this const an explicit type, as wide as callers need?

/// Default grid delegate for [StreamPhotoGallery].
const SliverGridDelegate defaultStreamPhotoGalleryDelegate = StreamMediaGridDelegate(
  mainAxisSpacing: 2,
  crossAxisSpacing: 2,
);

Right now the type is inferred from the right-hand side, so swapping SliverGridDelegateWithFixedCrossAxisCount for StreamMediaGridDelegate silently changed the public type of an exported symbol. Nobody should be reading .crossAxisCount off a default, but the declared type shouldn't depend on which implementation we pick. With SliverGridDelegate, we can change the implementation later without touching the API, and StreamMediaGridDelegate doesn't have to leak into the public type before we decide to export it.

It would be good to add this to STYLE_GUIDE.md as a general rule: public top-level constants and fields that serve as defaults declare an explicit type: the most general type their consumers accept (e.g. SliverGridDelegate, Widget, ShapeBorder), not the concrete implementation class.

Agreed. Done in 23324df: it's now const SliverGridDelegate defaultStreamPhotoGalleryDelegate = StreamMediaGridDelegate(...), and its docs no longer name the class behind it. Your rule is in the style guide as of 3f8c879, under "Prefer explicit types", including the note that type_annotate_public_apis doesn't flag an inferred top-level const.

This isn't exported from stream_chat_flutter.dart. Not a blocker if the default above is typed as SliverGridDelegate, but it means a customer who wants the adaptive grid with different spacing can't get it: setting any gridDelegate loses the adaptive columns. Worth exporting (plus an Added changelog line) now or in a follow-up?

Keeping it internal for now. gridDelegate on both galleries accepts any SliverGridDelegate, so a customer who wants different spacing or counts isn't stuck, and exporting it would make the 600/840 breakpoints public API. Happy to export it with an Added line once someone asks for it.

Two small things:

  • 600/840 are magic numbers explained in inline comments; named constants would read better, per STYLE_GUIDE.
  • constraints.crossAxisExtent is the grid's own width after padding, not the screen's, so padding: EdgeInsets.all(16) on a 600-wide screen gives 568 → 3 tiles. That's probably fine, but the dartdoc should say the breakpoints refer to the grid's width.

Named them in 656599e (_kMediumGridMinWidth, _kExpandedGridMinWidth), and the comments now say why each count was chosen instead of naming devices, since the width is the grid's own and can be a pane. I kept the public docs at "more tiles per row as the grid gets wider" so the breakpoints stay an implementation detail.

Changing this default from 264 to 272 widens every bubble built with the constructor by 8px, including the long-press preview, custom builders and customer goldens. The migration doc is updated, but there's no CHANGELOG.md entry. Could you add a 🔄 Changed line, something like "StreamMessageItem's default maxWidth is now 272, matching StreamMessageItemProps"?

402/669/867 are all mid-band widths, so a </<= slip or a typo in 600/840 would still pass. A parametrised test on StreamMediaGridDelegate.getLayout at 599→3, 600→4, 839→4, 840→6 is cheap.

Also untested: the assert that crossAxisCount and gridDelegate can't both be passed (expect(() => …, throwsAssertionError)).

Done in 2226eaa: the widths are now each side of the breakpoints (599→3, 600→4, 839→4, 840→6) through the public widget, and there's a throwsAssertionError test for passing both crossAxisCount and gridDelegate. Checked that <= at either breakpoint and dropping the assert each fail a test.

Cover both breakpoint transitions for StreamPhotoGallery's default delegate.

The current test checks only a 669-wide grid, which expects four columns. A fixed-count delegate with four columns would pass this assertion while breaking the intended three-column and six-column ranges. Add assertions below 600, at 600, below 840, and at 840.

Applied in a3c0852. Checked it against the analyzer too: of an inferred top-level const, final and var, type_annotate_public_apis flags only the var.
