Description of the pull request

Follow-up to the review on #2995 (#2995 (comment)). Without the upload-file capability the backend rejects every upload, but StreamMessageComposer still offered the picker's upload options, voice recording, dropped files and keyboard images, so the message only failed on send.

Without upload-file the composer now:

  • removes the gallery, camera, video and file options from the attachment picker. Polls and commands stay available, and the attachment button hides only when nothing is left to offer,
  • hides voice recording,
  • ignores dropped files and keyboard images.

Capabilities come from ownCapabilitiesStream, so a change reaches the composer when the channel is next queried, watched or synced. A channel that isn't created yet has no capabilities, so uploads stay available there. Uploads only run inside sendMessage, after the channel has been created, and its creator holds upload-file under the default messaging permissions.

Also:

  • The commands option is hidden in channels without commands; it used to open an empty list.
  • Dropped files respect disableAttachments and allowedAttachmentPickerTypes.
  • Keyboard images stay available after a command is cleared. Images inserted while a command is active are ignored.

Users without the capability no longer see these upload controls. This is recorded under ⚠️ Changed in the CHANGELOG. There's no compile-time change.

Sibling SDKs

  • React filters its attachment menu the same way: the file entry needs upload-file, while polls and commands keep their own checks.
  • UIKit, Android (Compose and XML) and React Native hide the whole attach button without upload-file, which also removes poll creation.
  • Voice recording requires upload-file in UIKit and Android XML. Compose, React, React Native and SwiftUI don't tie it to upload-file.
  • Channels without capabilities: UIKit falls back to allowing uploads (channel?.canUploadFile ?? true), as this PR does. Android, React and React Native fall back to not allowing them.

Testing

  • message_composer_upload_capability_test.dart covers:
    • the options in both the tabbed and the system picker,
    • the attachment button, including with disableAttachments,
    • voice recording, dropped files and keyboard images,
    • a capability revoked after mount,
    • a channel that isn't created yet.
  • message_composer_content_insertion_test.dart covers keyboard images while a command is active.
  • The full stream_chat_flutter suite passes locally apart from macOS platform golden tests.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Updates
    • The message composer now respects channel upload permissions. When uploads aren’t allowed, attachment and voice-recording controls are unavailable, and dropped files or keyboard-inserted images can’t be added.
    • Attachment options reflect available capabilities and settings. Polls aren’t available while editing a message or in a thread, and options are hidden when attachments are disabled.
    • If an option becomes unavailable while the attachment picker is open, the picker updates its selection or closes when no options remain.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Dropped files are rejected when attachments are disabled or their type isn’t allowed.
    • The commands tab is hidden when a channel has no commands.

📝 Walkthrough

The composer filters attachment options using channel capabilities and configuration. It applies the filtered options to attachment controls, voice recording, dropped files, picker options, and keyboard image insertion. Tests cover capability changes, uninitialized channels, and command-active insertion.

Changes: Composer capability-gated input options

Layer / File(s) Summary
Capability state and allowed options
packages/stream_chat_flutter/lib/src/message_input/stream_message_composer.dart, packages/stream_chat_flutter/CHANGELOG.md
The composer reads channel capabilities and filters attachment options by upload, poll, command, and attachment configuration. It uses upload capability when channel state is unavailable.
Picker and upload-path enforcement
packages/stream_chat_flutter/lib/src/message_input/stream_message_composer.dart, packages/stream_chat_flutter/lib/src/message_input/attachment_picker/stream_attachment_picker.dart, packages/stream_chat_flutter/test/src/message_input/message_composer_upload_capability_test.dart, packages/stream_chat_flutter/CHANGELOG.md
The composer passes filtered options to the picker and gates drag-and-drop, attachment controls, and voice recording. The picker updates its selection when options change and renders an empty state when none remain. Tests cover capability changes, picker options, uninitialized channels, and disabled attachments.
Keyboard image insertion behavior
packages/stream_chat_flutter/lib/src/message_input/stream_message_composer.dart, packages/stream_chat_flutter/test/src/message_input/message_composer_content_insertion_test.dart
Keyboard image insertion requires images to be allowed. The composer ignores inserted content while a command is active, and tests verify this behavior.

Decided in e7af920: the button no longer hides on upload-file. Without it, only the upload options (gallery, camera, video, files) leave the picker. Polls, commands and custom picker types stay, and the button hides only when no option is left (or with disableAttachments). A future live-location type would stay too, since only the upload types depend on upload-file.

Add a test for capability changes after mount.

The tests only use MockChannel.ownCapabilities, whose stream emits once. An implementation that reads only the initial capability would pass them. Add a test that emits _cannotUpload after mounting and checks that the attachment button, microphone, and keyboard insertion configuration update.

Without upload-file every upload is rejected by the backend, but the
composer still offered the attachment button, voice recording and drag
and drop, so the message only failed on send. Hide the button and voice
recording, and ignore dropped files and keyboard images, when the
capability is missing. The composer reacts to capability changes.

A channel that isn't created yet has no capabilities to check, so it
keeps uploads available. This also fixes keyboard images being off on
such channels, since they checked canUploadFile directly.

Question about: A channel that isn't created yet has no capabilities to check, so uploads stay available until it is. - Wouldn't it make sense to actually disable the uploads until we have a capability to check? I assume that if we try to send an attachment, it would fail anyway. (just my 2 cents, perhaps I am missing soemething)

Uploads never run against a channel that doesn't exist yet: they happen inside sendMessage, which requires an initialized channel, so the first send creates the channel first (e.g. preMessageSending → channel.watch()). By then the creator has upload-file under the default messaging permissions, as both owner (user role, owner-scoped UploadAttachment) and member (channel_member), in v1 and v2.

Disabling uploads until capabilities arrive would remove attachments from every new DM's first message, while the default permissions allow them. If an app's permissions or channel config deny uploads, the upload is still rejected on send, as before this PR. UIKit uses the same fallback (channel?.canUploadFile ?? true).

Without the upload-file capability the composer now removes only the
picker's upload options, so poll creation and commands stay reachable.
The attachment button hides only when nothing is left to offer.

- Read all capabilities from one live list; config is read safely, so a
channel that isn't created yet no longer throws.
- Hide the commands option in channels without commands.
- Dropped files respect disableAttachments and allowedAttachmentPickerTypes.
- Keyboard images stay available after a command is cleared; inserts are
ignored while a command is active.

This accepts the drop and then silently throws it away, so the user gets no hint the files were rejected. DropTarget has an enable parameter (desktop_drop 0.7.1); with it off, the window stops registering as a drop target and the OS refuses the drop itself (on macOS the item snaps back):

DropTarget(
  enable: allowedTypes.contains(AttachmentPickerType.files),
  onDragDone: ...,

I'd keep this early return as a backstop.

Fixed in 2367132: DropTarget(enable: canDropFiles), so the composer no longer accepts the drop at all. I dropped the early return instead of keeping it as a backstop: with enable false, desktop_drop removes its listener, so onDragDone can't fire, and both values come from the same build. The "does not accept dropped files…" tests check DropTarget.enable directly.

Returning null here once upload-file is revoked doesn't reach a keyboard that's already attached. EditableText only sends allowedMimeTypes to the IME when the input connection opens, and didUpdateWidget doesn't call updateConfig when contentInsertionConfiguration changes. So Gboard keeps offering images: an insert then hits the insertContent assertion in debug and is silently dropped in release. The reverse also happens: a newly granted capability isn't offered until the field refocuses.

Same fix as the command check below: always return the configuration, and check allowedTypes.contains(AttachmentPickerType.images) inside _onContentInserted. A test that revokes the capability while the field has focus, then inserts content, would cover it.

Fixed in 07a71a8, as you suggested. The keyboard always gets the insertion configuration, and _onContentInserted accepts an image only when the composer currently allows images, so a capability granted or revoked while the keyboard is open applies straight away, with no assertion. That one check also covers disableAttachments and allowedAttachmentPickerTypes; the trade-off is that the keyboard offers images in a composer that never accepts them, and an insert is ignored there. Covered by the "ignores … keyboard images" tests, including one that revokes the capability while the composer is open.

The comment that used to sit above this explained why the bytes == null || bytes.isEmpty check exists: the platform reads the content before handing it over, and a failed read can arrive as no data or as empty data. Could you restore it? This PR only moved the command check, and without that comment the guard looks arbitrary.

These public dartdocs no longer match the behaviour:

  • enableVoiceRecording: "If true the voice recording button will be displayed." Now it also needs upload-file.
  • disableAttachments: "If true the attachments button will not be displayed." Now it also rejects dropped files and keyboard images, and hides polls and commands.
  • allowedAttachmentPickerTypes: "which can be picked using the attachment button." Now files also controls drag-and-drop and images controls keyboard insertion. Upload types are further limited by upload-file, and commands by the channel's commands.

Could you update those three docs?

Updated in 2367132. disableAttachments: the attachment button is hidden, and dropped files and keyboard images are refused. enableVoiceRecording: the button is only shown when the channel allows uploads. allowedAttachmentPickerTypes: applies to the picker, dropped files and keyboard images, and a type is only offered when the channel allows it.

initialOption is now ignored when it isn't in options. Could you update its dartdoc ("The initial option to be selected.") to say so, and add a direct picker test: pump with an initialOption that isn't in options, and expect the first enabled option's view.

Done in 2367132. The doc now says it's ignored when it isn't one of the options, and the first enabled option is selected instead. Covered by "ignores an initial option that is not one of the options" in the new stream_tabbed_attachment_picker_test.dart.

Could this file get direct unit tests in test/src/message_input/attachment_picker/stream_attachment_picker_test.dart? Right now these paths are only covered through the composer, or not at all:

  • empty options (this used to throw a StateError from options.first). A custom attachmentPickerOptionsBuilder returning [] can still hit it;
  • options going from non-empty to empty without throwing;
  • the selected option disappearing, with the selection moving to a remaining one.

Added in 2367132 as test/src/message_input/attachment_picker/stream_tabbed_attachment_picker_test.dart (kept separate from the already long picker test file): builds without options, keeps building when its options become empty, moves to a remaining option when the selected one disappears, plus the initialOption cases. Each fails with its fix removed.

This passes even if the post-frame _hidePicker() is deleted. _buildInlineAttachmentPicker returns Empty whenever allowedTypes is empty, so the picker is never found either way. A stuck _isPickerVisible would show up when the capability comes back. Suggestion: re-add _canUpload after revoking, pump, and expect no picker (or check that the button's isPickerOpen is false).

Good catch, fixed in 2367132. After revoking, the test grants upload-file back and expects the picker to stay closed, so it now fails without the post-frame _hidePicker().

Can you assert the precondition, expect(find.text('Upload tab'), findsOneWidget), before capabilities.add(...)? Otherwise the test passes without testing anything if the initial selection ever lands on the poll tab.

  • Capability granted after mount. Every stream test goes from _canUpload to _cannotUpload. Start from _cannotUpload, emit _canUpload, and expect the mic and attachment button to appear. That exercises the initialData / comparator wiring.
  • Dropped files blocked by allowedAttachmentPickerTypes. With _canUpload and allowedAttachmentPickerTypes: const [AttachmentPickerType.images], a drop should now be ignored. Customers lose drag-and-drop here with no warning, so it's worth a test.
  • Channel initialized after mount. When channel.state is null, _buildMessageInput hardcodes [uploadFile], and nothing seems to switch it to the stream once the channel is initialized. A test would show whether that's a real problem.
  • Polls and commands on an uninitialized channel. Assert poll-creator isn't offered there. A regression that reads channel.config would throw a StateError.

Added in 2367132: a capability granted after mount (mic and attachment button appear), drops refused when allowedAttachmentPickerTypes leaves out files, and no poll option on an uninitialized channel (the helper makes channel.config throw there, so a regression that reads it fails).

On a channel initialized after mount: it's a real but narrow gap. The fallback is used until the input next rebuilds (focus change, picker toggle, a / or @ trigger), so polls and commands from the channel config stay hidden until then. It only happens when StreamChannel shows its child before loading finishes, or on a new DM before its first send; the existing send-message gate has the same pattern. I'd fix both together when capabilities move to the controller rather than add a channel listener here.

- The unread messages divider now shows a count.
- `StreamMessageListView` no longer marks a channel read until the unread boundary has been seen, or while it is manually marked unread.
- Screen readers now announce each message as one phrase: sender, body, time and status.
- `StreamMessageComposer` now hides upload options, voice recording included, when the user lacks the `upload-file` capability in the channel.

This doesn't cover everything that changes:

  • Dropped files are ignored, not hidden.
  • The attachment button disappears whenever nothing is left to offer.
  • Customers who set allowedAttachmentPickerTypes: [images] lose drag-and-drop even with upload-file.
  • On an uninitialized channel, keyboard images are now accepted; master rejected them there because canUploadFile read an empty list.

Suggestion: "StreamMessageComposer now hides the picker's upload options and voice recording, and ignores dropped files, when the user lacks the upload-file capability. The attachment button is hidden when nothing else is left to offer." Plus a line about drag-and-drop now following allowedAttachmentPickerTypes.

Updated in 2367132 with your wording, plus a ⚠️ Changed line that drops are refused when disableAttachments is set or allowedAttachmentPickerTypes leaves out files (moved from 🐞 Fixed, since it changes behaviour for apps allowing only images). No keyboard-images line: keyboard insertion came with #2995 and hasn't been released, so there's no released behaviour to compare against.

xsahil03x and others added 3 commits October 13, 2026 14:03
- Disable the drop target when files can't be added, rather than
accepting the drop and discarding it.
- Update the docs of `disableAttachments`, `enableVoiceRecording`,
`allowedAttachmentPickerTypes` and `initialOption` to match the new
  behaviour.
- Add direct tests for the tabbed picker, and composer tests for a
capability granted after mount, drops refused by the allowed types,
and polls on a channel that isn't created yet.

The keyboard reads its insertion configuration only when it connects,
so a configuration that followed the channel's capabilities went stale
while the keyboard was open: a revoked capability hit an assertion on
insert, and a granted one wasn't offered until the field refocused.

The keyboard now always gets the configuration, and an inserted image
is accepted only when the composer currently allows images.

These entries (this line, the next one, and the commands-tab fix under 🐞 Fixed) are in the ## 10.5.0 section, which has already shipped (v10.5.0 is tagged). They probably stayed there through the master merge. Could you move them to ## Upcoming: the two StreamMessageComposer lines to its 🔄 Changed and the commands-tab line to its 🐞 Fixed?

Moved in 2a633e8. They'd stayed under 10.5.0 through the master merge; the two composer lines are now under Upcoming's 🔄 Changed and the commands-tab fix under its 🐞 Fixed.

They stayed under the already-released 10.5.0 through the master merge.
