Summary

This fixes B3 from the 2026-10-04 kubelab live sweep: the Terraria and tModLoader templates' tcpSocket readiness probe crash-looped the game server.

Why: the kubelet's probe connects to port 7777 and closes at once. The Terraria server then throws ObjectDisposedException in Netplay.ServerLoop and exits.

The fix: an exec readiness probe now reads /proc/net/tcp for a socket listening on 7777. It never connects, so it can't trigger the crash, and the pod still turns Ready only once the server accepts players.

Changes:

The first commit on this branch removed the probe outright. Following review, the second commit restores readiness gating with the non-connecting probe.

Verification

  • On kubelab (details in gameplane-module#42):
    • The exec probe kept a vanilla server Ready for 6.5 minutes with 0 restarts. The tcpSocket probe gave 5 restarts in 6 minutes.
    • The probe returns 0 for port 7777 and 1 for 7778.
    • The tModLoader image has sh, grep -E and /proc/net/tcp.
  • Nothing was compiled or tested locally; CI is the authority. gofmt -l is clean on the fixture.
  • A sonnet reviewer checked the diffs. It caught a mis-indented YAML block, which was fixed before the push.

Needs a reviewer's eye

  • Test change: this edits an e2e fixture (the template the test creates), not an assertion.

The kubelet's tcpSocket readiness probe connects to the game port and
closes at once, which crashes the Terraria server (ObjectDisposedException
in Netplay.ServerLoop) and crash-loops the pod. Bump modules to
gameplane-module#42, where terraria 2.2.2 and tmodloader 1.0.1 declare no
probe, and set Probes to nil in the Terraria bot e2e fixture so the test
runs the shipped configuration.

Walkthrough

The modules subproject reference advances to a new commit. The Terraria readiness probe now searches /proc/net/tcp and /proc/net/tcp6 for port 7777 in listening state instead of checking the game port with a TCP socket.

Merge the module PR with a merge commit before merging this pointer update. Otherwise the pinned module commit may disappear from main. The test change is low risk.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 8477e

The inspected change replaces an active connection with a fixed, passive listener check without broadening the test's network exposure or privileges. Production behavior at the new module revision remains unverified.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The directly verified execution scope is the E2E game container and its listener visibility. Wider deployment exposure cannot be bounded from the module pin alone because the referenced production templates were unavailable.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • inferred — The inspected change uses the existing template-to-container probe authority with a literal command; it does not add a caller-controlled command source or alter container identity settings. Readiness remains separate from liveness and startup controls.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Repeated or concurrent executions of the configured listener check introduce no persistent writes or cleanup obligations. Existing status logic requires ready replicas and a fresh agent heartbeat for Running, re-evaluates startup failures on later reconciliations, and permits recovery rather than permanently latching Failed. This does not prove recovery of partially generated world data.

Follow-up to db2a235, which dropped the crashing tcpSocket readiness probe.
gameplane-module#42 now replaces it with an exec probe that reads
/proc/net/tcp for a socket listening on 7777, so the pod only turns Ready
once the server accepts players and the probe never opens a connection.
Bump modules to that commit and mirror the probe in the Terraria bot e2e
fixture.

Comment thread modules Outdated
gameplane-module#42 (Terraria/tModLoader exec readiness probe) and #43
(minecraft-java currentFrom on Set difficulty) are both merged; pin modules
to their merge commit on main instead of the #42 branch commit, so one
bump carries both.
