Thanks for submitting a PR! Please check the boxes below:

  • I have read the Contributing Guide.
  • I have added information to docs/ if required so people know about the feature.
  • I have filled in the "Changes" section below.
  • I have filled in the "How did you test this code" section below.

Changes

Contributes to #14

Stacked on #33 (validation and transient), which is stacked on #32 (run() refactor).

Adds an extension point so a separate crate can plug identity persistence into the proxy without the public crate knowing how it is stored. With no implementation plugged in, behaviour is unchanged.

  • IdentityStore trait (src/identities/store.rs) with load_traits (the identity's traits, returned in the response, and its system traits, used only for evaluation and overriding on the same key) and save_traits (called after the response is built, with the environment key type, client or server; may write nothing and never blocks the response). EnvironmentService holds an optional implementation; get_identity_response_data uses it when present and runs the existing path otherwise.
  • run(settings, identity_store) and create_router(settings, identity_store) take the optional implementation. The open binary passes None.
  • Test fixture fix: segment_1's condition used property instead of property_, so it could never match.

How did you test this code?

  • tests/test_identity_store.rs: a hand-written recording implementation of the trait, covering no implementation (unchanged behaviour), evaluation with loaded traits, response with loaded traits, and save_traits called once with the right key type for client and server keys.
  • cargo fmt, cargo clippy -- -D warnings and the full test suite pass on each commit.

`evaluate_with_identity_store` calls the synchronous `save_traits` on the
request task before it returns the response. A store that performs slow I/O
there blocks an async worker thread and delays the identity response. Make the
write an async method that the caller awaits, or run it on a blocking task.

Walkthrough

The change adds a public identity-store interface and connects an optional store to identity evaluation. When configured, the service loads stored traits, evaluates with system traits taking precedence over matching regular traits, and saves traits using the presented key type. The response serialises the traits used for evaluation. Tests cover stored and request traits, key classification, and existing router call sites.

Merge Risk: Low · up to a73cf

The default binary remains unaffected. Embedded deployments should avoid blocking store writes and account for large trait lists. These bounded concerns and a save-test coverage gap warrant follow-up but do not establish a merge-blocking failure.

Build the system key set once instead of scanning it per trait.

The precedence filter checks every regular trait against every system trait, so identity evaluation costs O(n × m). An embedder-supplied IdentityStore can return large trait lists, which can add significant CPU per request. The shipped binary passes no store, so this path runs only when an embedder configures one.

Assert the submitted traits in the save test.

The recording store keeps only the environment API key, the identity identifier and the key type. Its save_traits ignores identity.traits. The save test also posts an empty traits array. As a result, the test passes whether or not the submitted traits reach save_traits.

A change that passes a rebuilt identity with the same identifier and no traits would not fail test_post_identities_with_store_saves_traits_once_with_key_type.

Record the identity traits in SaveCall. Post non-empty request traits in the save test, and assert that the recorded traits match the submitted ones.

Make the identity store write non-blocking, or offload it.

evaluate_with_identity_store calls the synchronous save_traits on the request task before it returns the response. A store that performs slow I/O there blocks an async worker thread and delays the identity response. Make the write an async method that the caller awaits, or run it on a blocking task.
