Playwright CI fails on ubuntu-latest (now Ubuntu 26.04) #4996
Description
Both Playwright workflows (run-playwright-tests-anvil-catalog.yml, run-playwright-tests-anvil-cmg.yml) now fail at the Install Playwright Browsers step, before any test runs:
BEWARE: your OS is not officially supported by Playwright; installing dependencies for ubuntu26.04-x64 as a fallback.
Cannot install dependencies for ubuntu26.04-x64 with Playwright 1.59.1!
Error: ERROR: Playwright does not support chromium on ubuntu26.04-x64
Cause
The workflows use runs-on: ubuntu-latest, which GitHub has moved from Ubuntu 24.04 to Ubuntu 26.04. Playwright 1.59.1, the version locked in package-lock.json, can't install its browser dependencies on 26.04. Neither the workflow nor the Playwright version changed in the repo.

This affects every PR, not one change in particular.
Suggested fix
- Short term: pin
runs-on: ubuntu-24.04in both Playwright workflows to get CI green again. - Follow-up: upgrade
playwright/@playwright/test(latest is 1.64.1; see also chore(deps): bump playwright and @playwright/test #4574) to a version that supports Ubuntu 26.04, then go back toubuntu-latestif wanted.
Definition of done
- Playwright anvil-catalog and anvil-cmg workflows pass on PRs again.

Thanks for writing this up, @frano-m! Could you take this one? Let's skip the pin and go straight to the follow-up: upgrade Playwright to a version that supports Ubuntu 26.04 and stay on
ubuntu-latest.Could you do the same on all our projects that run Playwright in CI? The ones I found are brc-analytics (
run-checks.yml), meta-disco-browser (both Playwright workflows) andczii-umbrella-django, but please check for others. brc-analytics has required checks, so it'll block merges there once its e2e job lands on 26.04. This morning it still got 24.04.Thanks!
