cfgit also discovers `.cfg.toml` by walking up from the current directory, so you can run it
from a subdirectory without `--config-file`. Global flags (`--config-file`, `--env`, `--author`,
`--branch`, `--json`) go before the subcommand: `cfg --env prod status`.

## Updates

cfgit checks PyPI for a newer release on cheap read commands (`status`/`doctor`/`whoami`/`log`),
throttled to once a day. For an interactive terminal it prints a one-line nudge to stderr with a
short "what's new" excerpt from the release notes — never on `--json`/piped output, and it never
upgrades for you:

```bash
cfg check-update # force a check now (shows what's new + the release link)
cfg check-update --snooze 30 # don't remind me for 30 days
```

Set `CFGIT_NO_UPDATE_CHECK=1` to disable the check entirely. Over MCP, the `cfg_check_update` tool
does the same (pass `snooze_days` to snooze); agents should offer the upgrade but never run it.
The check is best-effort — if the network is unavailable it stays silent.
