Why Dockit?

Docker Desktop is heavy and tied to Docker. The CLI is powerful but hard to scan at a glance. Dockit gives you a lightweight native UI that works the same way with Docker or Podman, switchable at runtime, and can even install a container runtime for you if you don't have one.

Built with Wails v2 (Go) and React 19 + Tailwind CSS v4, so it ships as a small native binary instead of an Electron bundle.

Features

  • Docker and Podman: switch engines with one click. Dockit auto-detects Docker sockets, rootless and rootful Podman sockets, and Windows named pipes, and lets you override the endpoint.
  • Collapsible & Resizable Sidebar: toggle between full navigation and a compact 58px mini-rail with Ctrl+B / Cmd+B or the rail toggle button. Smoothly adjust sidebar width with the VS Code-style horizontal resize sash (persisted via localStorage).
  • Containers: start, stop, restart, pause, delete (with batch actions), live CPU/memory/network/disk metrics, searchable log streaming with line-wrap toggle and raw text export, 1-click browser port launch (localhost:<port> ↗), full inspector, interactive exec shell, and a create-container wizard (ports, env vars/.env, command override).
  • Images, volumes, networks: list, pull, tag, inspect, create, batch delete, and prune.
  • Compose Studio: open or clone projects, edit docker-compose.yml with syntax highlighting and snapshots, manage a .env tab, and run Up/Down/restart with live CLI output.
  • Registry Hub: search Docker Hub and GitHub Container Registry, read rendered READMEs, browse tags, and pull in one click.
  • Reclaim Storage: see disk usage by images, containers, volumes, and build cache, then quick-clean or prune selectively.
  • Bottom Dock Resources & Terminal Drawer (Ctrl+</kbd>): a VS Code-style terminal drawer with multi-tab sessions, quick diagnostic chips (docker ps, stats, system df, compose ps`), and bottom dock bar host metrics (RAM, CPU, cores) with rolling SVG sparklines.
  • Smart Engine Startup & Installer: 1-click engine service startup (systemctl start docker, open -a Docker, Start-Process Docker Desktop.exe) when engine is stopped, or full automated package installation (APT, DNF, Pacman, Homebrew, Winget, Chocolatey) when missing.
  • Auto-update: checks GitHub Releases and installs updates in place (.deb, .rpm, Windows installer, portable binary, or automated Snap Store updates).
  • Light and dark themes, universal filter focus with /, keyboard-friendly confirmation dialogs, and polling that pauses when the window is hidden or the engine is offline.

Install

Snap Store (Linux)

Install directly from the Ubuntu Snap Store:

sudo snap install dockit

Note: For Docker socket access under Snap strict confinement, connect the docker interface:

sudo snap connect dockit:docker

GitHub Releases

Download the latest build for your platform from the Releases page:

Platform Packages
Linux (Snap) sudo snap install dockit
Linux (amd64) .deb, .rpm, .tar.gz, .snap
Windows (amd64) Installer .exe, portable .zip
macOS (Universal) .dmg, .zip

You need Docker or Podman for Dockit to manage, though it can install one for you. On Linux, Dockit needs GTK 3 and WebKitGTK 4.1 at runtime (installed automatically by the .deb, .rpm, and .snap packages).

Getting started

Prerequisites

  • Go (version in go.mod)

  • Node.js 20+ and npm

  • Wails CLI v2.9+: go install github.com/wailsapp/wails/v2/cmd/wails@latest

  • Docker or Podman, to try the app against a real engine

  • Linux only, GTK and WebKit headers:

    # Debian / Ubuntu / Mint
    sudo apt-get install -y build-essential pkg-config libgtk-3-dev libwebkit2gtk-4.1-dev

    # Fedora / RHEL
    sudo dnf install -y gtk3-devel webkit2gtk4.1-devel

Run in development

git clone https://github.com/Amanbig/dockit.git
cd dockit
(cd frontend && npm install)
wails dev -tags webkit2_41 # drop "-tags webkit2_41" on Windows/macOS or older WebKitGTK

Production build

wails build -tags webkit2_41 # output: build/bin/dockit

Tests

go test ./internal/...
