Counting parse tree nodes is slow for a massive tree

The code using parse tree node counts needs to be redesigned to speed this up as much as possible. Admittedly there is only so much to be done when dealing with a massive tree.

This has been slightly sped up in the latest source and will be deployed in the next minor release version.
