replacing dirs with etcetera

I was wondering if it would makes sense to replace the crate dirs with etcetera.

This would allow to streamline the code a bit and I would retain backwards compat as well. What do you think? I can create a PR...

At this point, I think this migration plan is fine and seems beneficial for long-term maintenance. As a related point, I linked my previous comment here:
