Hello guys, my first post here. This is one of those seemingly off-topic queries where you just know that someone on a forum will have dealt with the same issue. I hope the moderators will forgive me...

I'm new to Brew but a long-time Linux user. I successfully installed the Homebrew software on my wife's MacBook Pro and used it to add a couple of things she needed. Neat!

I just bought a CanoScan scanner and installed it on my own machine with sane/Xsane, so I figured I'd use Brew to install the same setup on the MacBook. It wouldn't play ball.

I kicked around various dependencies for a while then had the idea of installing lsusb. If I run lsusb on my own machine, I expect a listing of ports and devices. What I got on the MacBook was a series of specific error codes that seemed to be related to all of the machine's points of entry.

Am I right in thinking that all the ports are blocked to unregistered software? If so, is there a workaround?

I'm keeping this general because I figure that what I'm describing would be totally obvious to a regular Mac/Brew user, but I'll gladly post the exact output if it's wanted.

Hi Patrick, thank you very much for your fast reply (and apologies to any Brew users who feel I'm taking the discussion off-topic).

I got onto my wife's computer a few minutes ago, ran lsusb, and have pasted the output below with the obvious security-related deletions.

The seven lines at the top struck me as distinctly odd, and the various hex codes and other things with which it tails off are quite unlike the lsusb output I'm used to. But I haven't had much to do with Macs since 2000, so may be doing something stoopid.

Worth mentioning also that Gill's Mac is running Sonoma 14.6.1. I've found a bunch of posts on various sites with variations of "I upgraded to Sonoma and now the device I previously connected to it via USB-C has stopped working".

This is a long-standing issue. @p-linnane actually added a new formula about a year ago as a stopgap in anticipation of an upstream fix, but since that looks highly unlikely now, I suggest:

brew uninstall lsusb
brew install lsusb-laniksj

Thanks, Patrick and gromgit, that's a huge help. (And sorry for asking stoopid questions -- like I said, I'm completely out of touch with the world of Mac.) With the patched lsusb, I can see that the USB-C to USB-mini cable I cobbled together from adapters isn't working. I've ordered a proper one. Best, NP

Just to throw this in here, Cyme could also be worth considering as an alternative. It is available as a formula:

brew install cyme

and provides compatible output with:

cyme --lsusb

I'm having a related issue where lsusb doesn't print anything after installing the brew formula.
