About

The Data Science Club aims to prepare students for potential future employment opportunities by providing hands-on experience with various projects. The club helps students build portfolios to be better prepared for careers as data scientists. Additionally, the club focuses on skill development through competitions, interview preparation, and collaborative projects.

Activities

Club events typically involve a variety of activities depending on the semester’s focus. Previously, the club held Kaggle competitions, but it has shifted towards interview preparation and small project development. These activities are designed to enhance students' problem-solving skills and technical expertise in data science.

Faculty Leaders

Jonathan McCurdy, P.h.D

j.r.mccurdy@msmary.edu

Daniel Salinas Duron, P.h.D

j.r.mccurdy@msmary.edu

Nadun Kulasekera Mudiyanselage, P.h.D

d.salinasduron@msmary.edu

The club is overseen by Dr. McCurdy, Dr. Nadun, and Dr. Salinas Duron, who are faculty members in the Math & CS Department. These faculty members provide guidance, structure activities, and support students in their learning journey.

Who participates in the activity?

Primarily, the club is intended for students majoring or minoring in Data Science. However, participation is also open to Math majors and other students with relevant experience in programming and data science. The club mainly advertises to Data Science students due to the technical nature of the activities involved.

Join Now

Students can join the club by reaching out via email to Dr. McCurdy or other faculty organizers. Invitations and meeting details are typically sent to students who are Data Science majors or minors. Interested students can simply attend meetings to get involved.

Meeting Times

Meetings typically happen around 5:00pm on Wednesdays, until around 6:000pm. Typically an email goes out if there is going to be a meeting on a given week.

Additional Considerations

Students considering joining the club should have foundational knowledge in data science. The faculty advisors recommend that students have completed at least Data 200 to fully engage with the club’s activities. Having some programming experience is also beneficial for participating in projects and competitions.
Overall, the Data Science Club is an excellent opportunity for students interested in data science to develop practical skills, gain industry-related experience, and connect with peers and faculty in the field.
