From 4535f4ae8514f0195b6f2a3cf7a85b1629f58a48 Mon Sep 17 00:00:00 2001 From: eavanvalkenburg Date: Wed, 14 Oct 2026 12:09:45 +0200 Subject: [PATCH 1/2] [BREAKING] Python: Protect AG-UI tool approval state from client Shared State AG-UI merges client Shared State into AgentSession.state, minus a protected set of server-owned namespaces. That set comes from optional attributes of the agent object AG-UI is handed, so a wrapper that does not expose the wrapped agent's ToolApprovalMiddleware left its custom source_id unprotected, and client state could supply or replace that middleware's approval state. Protect tool approval state by shape as well as by name: a client value holding a non-empty rules, queued_approval_requests or collected_approval_responses list is not merged into the session whatever its item encoding, and a key that already holds approval state in restored server state cannot be replaced by client values. A warning names each ignored key. Client state keys carrying those lists are no longer mirrored into AgentSession.state for any agent; they remain in Shared State and the model context. --- python/packages/ag-ui/AGENTS.md | 8 + .../ag-ui/agent_framework_ag_ui/_agent_run.py | 54 +++- .../ag-ui/tests/ag_ui/test_endpoint.py | 282 +++++++++++++++++- python/packages/ag-ui/tests/ag_ui/test_run.py | 51 ++++ 4 files changed, 391 insertions(+), 4 deletions(-) diff --git a/python/packages/ag-ui/AGENTS.md b/python/packages/ag-ui/AGENTS.md index 7990f963703..c1168a07477 100644 --- a/python/packages/ag-ui/AGENTS.md +++ b/python/packages/ag-ui/AGENTS.md @@ -120,6 +120,14 @@ AG-UI protocol integration for building agent UIs with the AG-UI standard. object AG-UI is handed, so a wrapper agent that does not forward it would silently drop the protection. `_RESERVED_SERVICE_SESSION_STATE_KEYS` therefore reserves such keys unconditionally; add a key there whenever it names a remote resource that the server's own credentialed call addresses. +- `ToolApprovalMiddleware` names its session state with an application-chosen `source_id`, which a wrapper can hide + from the agent AG-UI is handed.
