# PostgreSQL-backed memory context provider

> **Superseded by [ADR-0042](0042-postgres-context-memory.md).** The final design retains the
> PostgreSQL package and native .NET implementation but replaces the provider-owned, message-level
> pipeline with a reusable `PostgresMemoryClient` and thin `PostgresMemoryContextProvider`.

## Context and Problem Statement

Many customers run PostgreSQL as their primary database and want durable, cross-session agent
memory backed by it, using pgvector for semantic recall and a full-text ranking mechanism for
lexical recall, without introducing another datastore. How should a PostgreSQL memory provider be
designed and shipped, and should it be available for both .NET and Python?

## Decision Drivers

- Integrate through Agent Framework's existing context-provider extension points.
- Avoid requiring a separate always-on service; the provider should work with a plain PostgreSQL database plus optional extensions.
- Support both .NET and Python with parity, since both are first-class Agent Framework languages.
- Ship an initial, reviewable increment rather than the full memory pipeline (raw turns → facts → summaries → profile) in one PR.

## Considered Options

- Native per-language packages (`Microsoft.Agents.AI.Postgres` for .NET, with a matching Python package), each talking to PostgreSQL directly.
- A single shared backend service (one implementation, both SDKs as thin HTTP/gRPC clients) — avoids duplicating retrieval/extraction logic across languages at the cost of an extra deployable component.
- Reuse the existing `agent-framework-postgres` (Python) pgvector connector directly as the context provider, without a dedicated memory-shaped package.

## Decision Outcome

Chosen option: "Native per-language packages", because it keeps the integration in-process without
an additional service to deploy. Behavioral parity between the two languages is enforced through
documentation and shared expectations in this ADR rather than shared code.

### v1 scope

- Store conversation turns and derived memories with embeddings.
- Retrieve relevant memories via hybrid search: pgvector cosine similarity fused with PostgreSQL full-text ranking (native `tsvector`/`ts_rank`; BM25 extensions such as `pg_textsearch`/ParadeDB `pg_search` are a documented future upgrade, not a v1 requirement).
- Scope memories by application, agent, thread, and user identifiers.

### Deferred to a later iteration

- The reusable client and context-provider separation described in
 [0042-postgres-context-memory.md](0042-postgres-context-memory.md), which supersedes the initial
 provider-owned design.
- BM25 ranking via `pg_textsearch`/ParadeDB `pg_search` (native `tsvector`/`ts_rank` is the v1 fallback and default).
- The Python package (`agent-framework-postgres-memory` or similar); this ADR covers the .NET package (`Microsoft.Agents.AI.Postgres`) first.

# PostgreSQL ContextMemory architecture

## Context and Problem Statement

[0041-postgres-memory-provider.md](0041-postgres-memory-provider.md) proposed a PostgreSQL-backed
Agent Framework provider, but its first implementation placed persistence, retrieval, extraction,
summarization, and profile maintenance inside the provider itself. This coupled the reusable memory
engine to one Agent Framework lifecycle adapter. The PostgreSQL integration should separate those
responsibilities so the memory engine is useful independently and the .NET and Python adapters share
the same behavioral contract.

## Decision Drivers

- Preserve the distinction between an Agent Framework context adapter and a reusable memory engine.
- Support turns, facts, procedural memories, episodic memories, thread summaries, and cross-thread
 user summaries.
- Support confidence filtering, hybrid retrieval, memory reconciliation, and background processing,
 not only fact extraction.
- Use provider-agnostic chat and embedding abstractions in both language implementations.
- Keep PostgreSQL as the only durable dependency; pgvector supplies semantic retrieval and native
 PostgreSQL full-text search supplies lexical retrieval.

## Decision Outcome

The package contains two public layers:

1. `PostgresMemoryClient` is the reusable PostgreSQL ContextMemory engine. It owns storage,
 retrieval, transformation, cadence-aware background processing, explicit processing, and
 background-work flushing.
2. `PostgresMemoryContextProvider` is a thin Agent Framework lifecycle adapter. Before a run it
 searches the client and retrieves the user summary; after a run it writes conversation turns.
 It does not implement extraction or summarization itself.

The .NET implementation is distributed in `Microsoft.Agents.AI.Postgres`. The Python implementation
is part of `agent-framework-postgres` and uses Psycopg 3.

### Memory model

The configured base table name produces four tables:

- `{base}_turns`: append-only raw conversation turns.
- `{base}_memories`: active and superseded fact, procedural, and episodic memories, with confidence,
 salience, tags, embeddings, full-text indexes, expiry, and reconciliation metadata.
- `{base}_summaries`: versioned thread summaries and cross-thread user summaries.
- `{base}_processing`: per-scope processing checkpoints and extraction cadence state.

### Lifecycle

- The provider's pre-run hook performs hybrid vector/full-text search over typed derived memories
 and independently retrieves the user summary. Both are injected as user-role, explicitly
 untrusted reference information.
- The provider's post-run hook writes supported input and output messages as turns. A turn write may
 schedule processing, but the provider does not wait for extraction.
- Both providers support configurable search/request/response message filters and independent
 storage and search scopes.
- `PostgresMemoryClient` extracts typed memories, incrementally updates thread/user summaries,
 applies episodic TTL, folds exact/vector-similar duplicates, and reconciles semantic
 contradictions while retaining supersession history.
- `FlushAsync`/`flush` drains in-flight processing before shutdown. `ProcessNowAsync`/`process_now`
 is available through the provider and client layers, giving tests, operators, and applications
 with automatic cadence disabled an explicit processing hook.

### Scope

`PostgresMemoryScope.UserId` is required for durable operations and follows a user across sessions.
`ThreadId` is required when storing or processing turns. The provider defaults its search scope to a
copy without `ThreadId`, enabling cross-thread recall for the same user. Optional application and
agent identifiers provide additional isolation and are matched exactly; null identifiers do not
act as wildcards across other applications or agents.

### Retrieval

Search defaults to fact, procedural, and episodic memories. It filters by minimum confidence and
combines pgvector cosine ranking with native `tsvector`/`ts_rank` using Reciprocal Rank Fusion.
Superseded and expired records are excluded. The initial implementation uses native PostgreSQL
full-text ranking; optional BM25 extensions remain a future enhancement.

## Consequences

- The memory engine is independently usable and testable instead of being coupled to Agent
 Framework lifecycle types.
- The provider API is named `PostgresMemoryContextProvider` to make its lifecycle role explicit.
- Model clients and Npgsql/Psycopg data sources are supplied and owned by the caller. A convenience
 provider constructor owns only the `PostgresMemoryClient` it creates, not those dependencies.
- Summary versions are serialized with PostgreSQL advisory transaction locks, and processing
 checkpoints are monotonic so concurrent workers cannot move completed work backward. Stale or
 equal summary coverage is rejected while holding the same lock.
- Extraction and reconciliation require a complete, schema-valid JSON array response. One malformed
 item invalidates the full response, and processing checkpoints do not advance.
- Direct and scheduled thread processing share per-scope locks, and user-summary turn cutoffs are
 captured before model execution so concurrent turn writes are not checkpointed prematurely.
- In-process background processing is appropriate for development and low-throughput deployments.
 A durable PostgreSQL processor (for example, an outbox plus worker) is deferred.
- PostgreSQL `vector` HNSW indexing supports up to 2,000 dimensions; callers using larger embedding
 outputs must request reduced dimensions or a future half-precision/index strategy.

# PostgreSQL workflow checkpoints with a shared storage schema

## Context and Problem Statement

The PostgreSQL integration already persists agent memory. Workflows also need exact
execution snapshots to survive a process restart or wait for human approval. These are
not derived memories and must not pass through extraction, summarization, or vector search.
Python and .NET should share a storage contract without implying that their different
execution-state formats can resume across runtimes.

## Decision Drivers

- Reuse the existing checkpoint extension points without modifying the workflow engine.
- Support plain PostgreSQL, including deployments without pgvector or a model client.
- Share one relational schema and default table across both SDKs.
- Preserve scoped access, immutable snapshots, parent history, and committed save order.

## Considered Options

- **Separate language-specific tables:** simple payload separation, but duplicates database
 administration and creates unnecessary schema divergence.
- **Shared table with an explicit payload format:** common storage and operations, with
 independent SDK codecs. Does not provide cross-language execution recovery.
- **Universal checkpoint codec:** could enable portable recovery, but requires a framework-wide
 contract for graphs, executor identities, messages, types, and state restoration. A storage
 adapter cannot supply that guarantee by converting JSON field names.

## Decision Outcome

Implement `PostgresCheckpointStorage` in Python and `PostgresCheckpointStore` in .NET.
Both default to the same `agent_framework_checkpoints` table, in an existing configured
schema, with this common envelope:

| Column | Meaning |
| --- | --- |
| `application_id`, `tenant_id` | Required trusted application and authorization scope |
| `run_id` | Required execution identity; .NET's workflow session ID |
| `payload_format` | SDK-specific codec identifier |
| `checkpoint_id` | Identity within the scope and format |
| `workflow_name` | Optional definition metadata; used by Python filtering |
| `parent_checkpoint_id` | Previous checkpoint identity, when present |
| `version` | Storage-envelope version, initially integer 1 |
| `sequence` | Database-generated identity used for save ordering |
| `created_at` | Database timestamp for operational inspection |
| `payload` | Framework-serialized JSONB snapshot |

The composite primary key is `(application_id, tenant_id, run_id, payload_format, checkpoint_id)`.
A common B-tree index covers `(application_id, tenant_id, run_id, payload_format, sequence)`.
Each adapter filters every retrieval and deletion by its complete scope and format:

- Python: `agent-framework.python.checkpoint.v1`.
- .NET: `agent-framework.dotnet.checkpoint.v1`.

The discriminator versions the codec contract, not the installed package. Python retains
the checkpoint's own format version inside its payload. The .NET provider treats the
framework's `JsonElement` as opaque. A format change requires a new discriminator or an
explicit compatibility strategy; changing the envelope requires a schema migration.

Both providers serialize saves within a run and format using transaction-scoped PostgreSQL
advisory locks. The database identity is assigned after obtaining the lock, so commit order
does not depend on worker clocks or iteration counts. Python re-saving an identical
checkpoint ID is idempotent and does not change history order; conflicting content is
rejected. The .NET contract generates a new checkpoint ID for each creation.

## Consequences

- The same physical table can contain both runtimes' checkpoints, even for identical
 application, tenant, run, and checkpoint IDs. Neither runtime decodes the other's rows.
- SDK-specific payloads are **not** cross-runtime resumable. Python uses the framework's
 restricted pickle/JSON codec; .NET uses its JSON checkpoint marshaller.
- Scope values must be authorized by the host. They are query isolation, not a replacement
 for database access controls. Checkpoints must remain trusted, private, untampered state.
- Callers own injected connections and pools. A borrowed Python connection's outer
 transaction must commit before its checkpoint is durable; use pools for parallel writes.
- Table initialization creates no schema or extension and does not migrate incompatible
 existing tables. Provision the table before concurrent workers start. Retention and
 cleanup remain application responsibilities.
- Checkpoint persistence does not add scheduling, worker leases, distributed workflow
 ownership, or exactly-once external side effects. Hosts must avoid concurrent execution
 of the same run and use idempotency or an outbox for repeatable side effects.

## Verification

Focused tests cover round trips, scope and payload-format isolation, history ordering,
duplicate-save behavior, parent lookup, rollback, and concurrent writes. Model-free approval
samples demonstrate preserving a human wait across separate processes. Validation uses
an isolated PostgreSQL database without the vector extension.

# Agent with Memory Using PostgreSQL

This sample uses `PostgresMemoryClient` and `PostgresMemoryContextProvider` to derive and persist typed memories in PostgreSQL with pgvector, then recall them in a new agent session.

## Features Demonstrated

- Authenticating to Microsoft Foundry with `DefaultAzureCredential`
- Storing and inspecting raw conversation turns
- Extracting fact, procedural, and episodic memories
- Generating thread and cross-thread user summaries
- Using pgvector hybrid search to recall all three derived-memory types in new sessions
- Reconciling a changed preference while preserving supersession history
- Running the processing pipeline explicitly with `ProcessNowAsync`
- Using automatic background processing with `FlushAsync` in a smaller getting-started mode
- Using DiskANN and `azure_ai.rank()` on Azure Database for PostgreSQL flexible server

## Prerequisites

1. [.NET 10 SDK](https://dotnet.microsoft.com/download/dotnet/10.0)
2. A Microsoft Foundry project with:
 - A chat model deployment (the default is `gpt-5.4-mini`)
 - A `text-embedding-3-small` deployment with 1,536 dimensions
3. A PostgreSQL database with the [pgvector extension](https://github.com/pgvector/pgvector) available
4. A database role that can create the configured schema, tables, indexes, and the `vector` extension if it is not already installed
5. Azure CLI authentication (`az login`)

## Configuration

Set the following environment variables:

| Variable | Description | Default |
|---|---|---|
| `FOUNDRY_PROJECT_ENDPOINT` | Microsoft Foundry project endpoint | *(required)* |
| `POSTGRES_MEMORY_CONNECTION_STRING` | Npgsql connection string for the memory database | *(required)* |
| `FOUNDRY_MODEL` | Chat model deployment name | `gpt-5.4-mini` |
| `FOUNDRY_EMBEDDING_MODEL` | Embedding model deployment name | `text-embedding-3-small` |
| `FOUNDRY_EMBEDDING_DIMENSIONS` | Number of dimensions produced by the embedding deployment | `1536` |
| `FOUNDRY_RERANKER_MODEL` | Foundry reranker deployment name used by the Azure demo | `Cohere-rerank-v4.0-fast` |

### Embedding Model Dimensions

The embedding model and vector dimensions are a pair:

| Model | Default dimensions | Supported by this sample |
|---|---:|---|
| `text-embedding-3-small` | 1,536 | Yes (the default) |
| `text-embedding-3-large` | 3,072 | Not at its default size; `PostgresMemoryClient` currently supports up to 2,000 dimensions |

`FOUNDRY_EMBEDDING_DIMENSIONS` defines the PostgreSQL vector column size; it does not change the
number of dimensions returned by the embedding deployment. Its value must match the actual embedding
output. The sample therefore defaults to `text-embedding-3-small` with `1536`. Using the native
3,072-dimensional output from `text-embedding-3-large` requires future support for larger vectors
(such as DiskANN product quantization) in `PostgresMemoryClient`.

## Run the Sample

Run the smaller background-processing walkthrough:

```bash
dotnet run
```

### Advanced Memory Pipeline Demo

Run the comprehensive memory-processing walkthrough:

```bash
dotnet run -- --advanced
```

The walkthrough deliberately exercises all four PostgreSQL tables:

1. The first session stores raw turns, seeds fact, procedural, and episodic information, and explicitly runs extraction, thread summarization, user summarization, and reconciliation.
2. The second session uses hybrid retrieval to recall those memories from a new thread.
3. The third session changes the user's favorite animal from elephants to giraffes, then runs extraction and reconciliation to supersede the conflicting preference.
4. The final session verifies that a new thread receives the updated preference.

The sample prints the stored turns, active typed memories, summaries, and reconciliation count. Memory extraction and reconciliation use model output, so the exact records and wording can vary between runs.

### Azure DiskANN and Semantic Reranking Demo

This mode requires Azure Database for PostgreSQL flexible server. Allowlist `vector`, `pg_diskann`,
and `azure_ai` in the server's `azure.extensions` parameter. Deploy the configured reranker model in
Microsoft Foundry using a deployment type and region supported by
[Cohere Rerank v4](https://learn.microsoft.com/azure/foundry/foundry-models/concepts/models-sold-directly-by-azure#cohere-models-sold-by-azure).

Before running the Azure demo, choose one of the following authentication options.

#### Option 1: Cohere with an endpoint key

`FOUNDRY_RERANKER_MODEL` defaults to `Cohere-rerank-v4.0-fast`. Set it to your actual
deployment name if different. Changing this value does not deploy the model or update
the database's configured reranker endpoint.

1. Open the reranker deployment in Foundry and copy its endpoint key and **Reranker API** route.
2. Connect to the sample database as a user that can manage `azure_ai` settings, and run:

 ```sql
 CREATE EXTENSION IF NOT EXISTS azure_ai;
 SELECT azure_ai.set_setting('azure_ml.serverless_ranking_endpoint', '');
 SELECT azure_ai.set_setting('azure_ml.serverless_ranking_endpoint_key', '');
 SELECT azure_ai.get_setting('azure_ml.serverless_ranking_endpoint');
 ```

This option does not require a managed identity or Azure role assignment. The endpoint key is stored
in the database's `azure_ai` settings, so do not commit or print it.

#### Option 2: Azure OpenAI with managed identity

Set `FOUNDRY_RERANKER_MODEL` to the name of a deployed Azure OpenAI chat model supported by
`azure_ai.rank()`, and then:

1. In the Azure portal, open the Azure Database for PostgreSQL flexible server used by
 `POSTGRES_MEMORY_CONNECTION_STRING`. Under **Security** > **Identity**, turn the system-assigned
 managed identity **On**, and then save the change.
2. Open the Azure OpenAI resource that hosts the model deployment. Under **Access control (IAM)**,
 assign the **Cognitive Services OpenAI User** role to the managed identity of the PostgreSQL
 flexible server.
3. Restart the PostgreSQL flexible server so that the new identity is available to `azure_ai`.
4. Connect to the sample database as a user that can manage `azure_ai` settings, and run:

 ```sql
 CREATE EXTENSION IF NOT EXISTS azure_ai;
 SELECT azure_ai.set_setting('azure_openai.auth_type', 'managed-identity');
 SELECT azure_ai.set_setting('azure_openai.endpoint', 'https://.openai.azure.com');
 --OR
 SELECT azure_ai.set_setting('azure_openai.subscription_key', '');
 SELECT azure_ai.get_setting('azure_openai.auth_type');
 SELECT azure_ai.get_setting('azure_openai.endpoint');
 SELECT azure_ai.set_setting('azure_ml.serverless_ranking_endpoint', '');
 SELECT azure_ai.set_setting('azure_ml.serverless_ranking_endpoint_key', '');
 ```

The PostgreSQL administrator is a member of `azure_pg_admin`, which can manage these settings. For
more detail, see the Microsoft Learn guides for [managed identity with `azure_ai`](https://learn.microsoft.com/azure/postgresql/azure-ai/generative-ai-enable-managed-identity-azure-ai)
and [`azure_ai.rank()` setup](https://learn.microsoft.com/azure/postgresql/azure-ai/generative-ai-azure-ai-functions#setup-for-rank-function).

Run the Azure-specific walkthrough:

```bash
dotnet run -- --azure
```

The walkthrough creates a DiskANN index, prints its PostgreSQL definition, and stores several
similar memories. It then prints the same search first in hybrid reciprocal-rank-fusion order and
again after `azure_ai.rank()` semantic reranking so the two scores and ordering can be compared.

Both `pg_diskann` and the `azure_ai.rank()` AI function are preview features. Availability depends
on the Azure region and PostgreSQL version.

# PostgreSQL checkpoint recovery

This model-free sample prepares an order, persists a pending approval, and exits.
A second process rebuilds the workflow and resumes it from PostgreSQL without
running the preparation executor again.

## Prerequisites

- .NET 10 SDK and PostgreSQL 13 or later. No vector extension or model credentials are needed.
- `POSTGRES_CONNECTION_STRING`: an Npgsql connection string for the database.
- `POSTGRES_TENANT_ID`: the tenant identifier for this run.
- Optional `POSTGRES_APPLICATION_ID` (default `checkpoint-sample`) and `POSTGRES_SCHEMA`
 (default `public`). The schema must exist and the database role must be able to create
 the checkpoint table and index.

Run from this sample directory:

```sh
dotnet run -- start purchase-1042
dotnet run -- resume purchase-1042 approve
```

The first invocation prints `Prepared order: PO-1042`, waits for approval, and saves a
checkpoint before exiting. The second invocation prints `Approved order.` without
preparing the order again. Use `reject` instead of `approve` to reject it. Keep the
application, tenant, run ID, schema, and executor identities unchanged when resuming.

Both SDKs use `agent_framework_checkpoints`. Python and .NET can share the same table,
including application, tenant, and run identifiers, because each filters on its own
`payload_format`. The serialized execution state is SDK-specific: sharing storage does
not make a Python workflow checkpoint resumable by .NET, or vice versa.

The sample's tenant setting is supplied by its operator. A hosted application must
derive that scope from authenticated, authorized identity. Checkpoints are trusted
private data. Recovery after a checkpoint can repeat external side effects, so use
idempotency keys for operations such as creating an order or sending a payment.

# Microsoft Agent Framework PostgreSQL

`Microsoft.Agents.AI.Postgres` provides durable, cross-session agent memory backed by PostgreSQL
and pgvector, plus workflow checkpoint storage that does not require pgvector.
The package separates memory processing from Agent Framework lifecycle integration:

- `PostgresMemoryClient` owns the memory model, hybrid retrieval, processing pipeline, and
 background tasks.
- `PostgresMemoryContextProvider` adapts the client to Agent Framework's before/after invocation
 lifecycle.
- `PostgresCheckpointStore` implements `JsonCheckpointStore` for durable workflow recovery.

## Workflow checkpoints

```csharp
using Microsoft.Agents.AI.Postgres;
using Microsoft.Agents.AI.Workflows;
using Npgsql;
await using var checkpointDataSource = NpgsqlDataSource.Create(connectionString);
var checkpointStore = new PostgresCheckpointStore(
 checkpointDataSource, applicationId: "purchasing", tenantId: authenticatedTenantId);
await checkpointStore.EnsureTableAsync();
var checkpointManager = checkpointStore.CreateCheckpointManager();
```

Pass the manager to `InProcessExecution.RunStreamingAsync` and supply a stable `sessionId`
for the workflow run. Later, reconstruct the same graph and executor identities, obtain
the latest checkpoint with `checkpointManager.GetLatestCheckpointAsync(sessionId)`, and
pass it to `InProcessExecution.ResumeStreamingAsync` with the manager.

Use `CreateCheckpointManager()` to enable out-of-order JSON metadata, since JSONB
does not preserve property order. Application-specific serializer options can be passed
to this factory; they are copied without mutation. When constructing a manager directly
with `CheckpointManager.CreateJson`, supply `JsonSerializerOptions` with
`AllowOutOfOrderMetadataProperties = true` or polymorphic workflow state may fail to resume.

The supplied `NpgsqlDataSource` remains caller-owned. `EnsureTableAsync` creates a table
and index in an existing schema, with the corresponding database permissions. It does
not create schemas, install extensions, or migrate existing tables. PostgreSQL 13 or
later is sufficient; neither `UseVector()` nor an embedding or chat client is required.

Both Python and .NET use the default `agent_framework_checkpoints` table and the same
relational schema. The .NET `sessionId` maps to `run_id`. Queries always filter application,
tenant, run, and `payload_format` (`agent-framework.dotnet.checkpoint.v1`). Scope values
must come from trusted, authenticated application code. An index returns checkpoints
oldest first in committed save order, with optional parent filtering.

The table is shared, but execution payloads are SDK-specific. A .NET workflow cannot
resume a Python checkpoint or vice versa. See the
[shared storage decision](../../../docs/decisions/0043-postgres-workflow-checkpoints.md).
Use database permissions to keep checkpoints private and untampered; storage scoping
does not replace authorization. Retention is application-managed. This provider is not
a worker scheduler or an exactly-once execution engine: external actions after the last
checkpoint can repeat, so use idempotency keys where needed.

The [approval sample](../../samples/03-workflows/Checkpoint/PostgresCheckpointing) runs
the start and resume phases in separate processes. Set
`POSTGRES_CHECKPOINT_CONNECTION_STRING` to an explicitly designated database to run
`PostgresCheckpointStoreIntegrationTests`; these tests create and remove isolated schemas.

## Durable memory

The client stores raw turns and derives facts, procedural memories, episodic memories, thread
summaries, and cross-thread user summaries. Derived memories include confidence metadata and can be
reconciled when newer information contradicts older records.

```csharp
await using var dataSource = new NpgsqlDataSourceBuilder(connectionString)
 .UseVector()
 .Build();
await using var memoryProvider = new PostgresMemoryContextProvider(
 dataSource,
 embeddingGenerator,
 chatClient,
 _ => new PostgresMemoryContextProvider.State(
 new PostgresMemoryScope
 {
 UserId = authenticatedUserId,
 ThreadId = conversationId,
 }),
 clientOptions: new PostgresMemoryClientOptions
 {
 EmbeddingDimensions = 1536,
 },
 providerOptions: new PostgresMemoryContextProviderOptions
 {
 TopK = 5,
 });
var agent = chatClient.AsAIAgent(new ChatClientAgentOptions
{
 AIContextProviders = [memoryProvider],
});
```

This constructor creates, flushes, and disposes the internal `PostgresMemoryClient`. The supplied
`NpgsqlDataSource`, embedding generator, and chat client remain owned by the caller or dependency
injection container. Create a `PostgresMemoryClient` separately and pass it to the provider when it
must be shared, queried directly, or used by an external processing worker.

Use a stable, authorized `UserId` for cross-session recall. The default search scope omits the
thread id, so relevant memories can be recalled from the user's other conversations.
`ApplicationId` and `AgentId` are exact isolation dimensions: a null value matches only records
stored with a null value and does not search other applications or agents.

Turn writes schedule extraction and summary processing in the background by default. Drain pending
work before shutdown:

```csharp
await memoryProvider.FlushAsync();
```

Set `PostgresMemoryClientOptions.AutoProcess` to `false` and call
`PostgresMemoryContextProvider.ProcessNowAsync` with the current agent session, or call
`PostgresMemoryClient.ProcessNowAsync` with a scope when the application owns processing cadence
explicitly.

The database role must be able to create the configured schema and tables when
`EnsureSchemaOnFirstUse` is enabled. Install the PostgreSQL `vector` extension before deployment,
or grant the development role permission to create it on first use.

## Azure PostgreSQL DiskANN

Azure Database for PostgreSQL flexible server can use the `pg_diskann` extension instead of HNSW
for approximate vector search. Allowlist both `vector` and `pg_diskann` in the server's
`azure.extensions` parameter, then select DiskANN in the client options:

```csharp
clientOptions: new PostgresMemoryClientOptions
{
 EmbeddingDimensions = 1536,
 VectorIndexKind = PostgresMemoryVectorIndexKind.DiskAnn,
}
```

When `EnsureSchemaOnFirstUse` is enabled, the client creates the allowlisted extensions and the
selected indexes. Changing `VectorIndexKind` replaces indexes managed by this package; it does not
modify other indexes. DiskANN availability and supported versions depend on the Azure region and
PostgreSQL version. HNSW remains the default and works with PostgreSQL installations that support
pgvector.

## Azure AI semantic reranking

Azure Database for PostgreSQL flexible server can rerank the hybrid search candidate set by using
the preview `azure_ai.rank()` function. Allowlist `azure_ai`, deploy a supported reranker in
Microsoft Foundry, and configure the extension's endpoint and authentication. Managed identity is
recommended.

Enable reranking in the client options:

```csharp
clientOptions: new PostgresMemoryClientOptions
{
 EnableAzureAiReranking = true,
 AzureAiRerankerModel = "Cohere-rerank-v4.0-fast",
 RerankingCandidateCount = 25,
}
```

The default model name is `Cohere-rerank-v4.0-fast`. Override `AzureAiRerankerModel` if your
deployment has a different name. The model must already be deployed and the database's
reranker endpoint and authentication configured; changing this option does not provision them.

The client retrieves candidates with vector and full-text search, combines them with reciprocal
rank fusion, and sends at most `RerankingCandidateCount` records to `azure_ai.rank()`. It returns
the requested `TopK` in semantic rank order. `PostgresMemoryRecord.Score` retains the reciprocal
rank fusion score, and `PostgresMemoryRecord.RerankerScore` contains the semantic relevance score.
If the ranking call fails with a PostgreSQL error, the client logs a warning and returns the
original hybrid order.

To run the live storage tests, set `POSTGRES_MEMORY_CONNECTION_STRING` to a PostgreSQL database with
pgvector available, then run the `Category=Postgres` tests.

### Azure reranking integration tests

`AzureRankLiveIntegrationTests` provides opt-in live coverage separate from the general storage tests.
Supply an Npgsql-format connection string through the environment; never commit credentials.

| Environment variable | Purpose |
| --- | --- |
| `POSTGRES_AZURE_AI_CONNECTION_STRING` | An explicitly designated Azure PostgreSQL test database with `vector` and `azure_ai` already enabled. Enables the disabled-reranking and single-candidate tests. |
| `POSTGRES_AZURE_AI_RERANKER_MODEL` | A working reranker deployment for the success test. This test requires semantic scores and fails if retrieval falls back to hybrid results. |
| `POSTGRES_AZURE_AI_FAILURE_MODEL` | A model name configured to fail, such as a nonexistent deployment, for the fallback test. This test requires a logged database error, unchanged hybrid results, and successful subsequent reads and writes. |

Missing connection or model settings skip the corresponding tests. Providing settings opts into
real database calls; the model-dependent tests can invoke external inference and incur charges.
Chat and embedding clients are deterministic test doubles, and all memory content is synthetic.
No particular SQL error or extension version is required by the fallback test.

The database role needs permission to create and drop schemas, tables, and indexes. Tests create
unique `af_azure_rank_*` schemas and remove them during teardown. They do not configure model
endpoints, modify server settings, or replace the installed reranking function.

From `dotnet`, after setting the environment variables, run:

```shell
dotnet test --project tests/Microsoft.Agents.AI.Postgres.UnitTests --framework net10.0 --filter-class "*AzureRankLiveIntegrationTests"
```
