# Oatmeal desktop

- Run `npm test` and `npm run test:desktop` after desktop behavior changes.
- Keep API keys and model HTTP calls in the main process. The renderer receives only safe metadata through the preload bridge.
- Preserve local models and personal API-key providers when changing built-in providers.
- Do not read `.env` files or print authentication credentials.

## publik API
- App slug: `oatmeal-vedsoni-dev` (the `oatmeal` listing belongs to another repository)
- Base URL: https://publikhq.com/api/v1 (OpenAI Chat Completions, Responses, Anthropic Messages)
- Models: publik-fast, publik-balanced, publik-smart only; never a vendor model name
- Key: per-install `pk_` from POST /installs, stored at the publik credential path; env PUBLIK_API_KEY / PUBLIK_API_BASE_URL override
- App token: publik-app-token.txt (public by design, committed) or PUBLIK_APP_TOKEN
- 402: show error.message plus error.top_up_url only
- Never print or log a key

# Desktop architecture

Oatmeal 2 uses Electron with a sandboxed, context-isolated renderer. This keeps the existing browser audio approach portable without maintaining separate WebKit and WebView2 capture paths. The browser/agent workflow is preserved separately.

## Boundaries

- The renderer loads bundled files through `oatmeal://app`. CSP disallows remote scripts and outbound browser connections. It receives a narrow preload API, not Node or generic IPC access.
- The main process owns files, credentials, workers, account runtimes and HTTP calls. IPC handlers check the top-level frame and validate input. External browser links are host-allowlisted.
- Speech and text models run in separate worker threads. Downloads and CPU inference do not block the notebook UI.
- AudioWorklet captures microphone and system lanes independently. Samples are resampled to 16 kHz and sent in six-second packets; partial packets flush on stop.
- Audio packets are atomically persisted before acknowledgement. A serial transcription queue reads packets from disk. Stable segment IDs deduplicate a packet if the app crashes between transcript save and audio deletion.
- Meeting updates are serialized per meeting and atomically renamed. Notes and arriving transcripts cannot overwrite one another through concurrent writes. Interrupted recordings are marked during startup.
- API keys use Electron `safeStorage` (Keychain-backed on Mac, DPAPI on Windows). Settings reads never return plaintext keys. Meeting text is stored unencrypted in the user's application data directory.

## AI providers

Local Whisper/Qwen use Transformers.js and ONNX Runtime. No localhost HTTP service is started. Optional Ollama connects to `127.0.0.1:11434`.

OpenAI, xAI and OpenRouter use Chat Completions; Claude API uses Anthropic Messages. API bases are fixed and redirects rejected. Empty output and HTTP errors are surfaced without relaying raw bodies that might echo private data. Model IDs are editable.

Long summaries use bounded chunks and hierarchical reduction. Direct questions reject oversized input instead of silently truncating it. For the built-in small local models, generation selects numbered statements and the app renders only original meeting excerpts. Invalid IDs and generated prose are discarded. Possible follow-ups use explicit commitment wording and remain labeled for review. This avoids inventing people and deadlines in freeform local summaries.

Subscription sign-in is owned by the official runtimes:

- **ChatGPT:** packaged Codex app-server over stdio, browser login, account status, ephemeral threads/turns. Configuration lives under Oatmeal's `accounts/codex`. Read-only mode, disabled shell tools/search, and rejected tool/approval callbacks constrain execution.
- **Claude:** packaged Agent SDK runtime, `auth login --claudeai`, then SDK `query()` with no tools, no MCP servers, no setting sources, no persistent session, and denied tool requests. Configuration lives under `accounts/claude`.
- Provider API-key environment variables are removed from subscription processes. Existing coding-agent configuration is not loaded.

Official references checked October 5, 2026:

## Publik API

`desktop/core/publik.mjs` adapts the [TypeScript reference](https://publikhq.com/sdk/publik.ts.md) for the Electron main process. Only chat is connected; transcription remains local. The model selector accepts `publik-fast` (default), `publik-balanced`, and `publik-smart`.

Credential precedence: a personal publik key saved in Oatmeal's encrypted settings, then `PUBLIK_API_KEY` / `PUBLIK_API_BASE_URL`, then the provisioned per-app file. With none present, the UI shows the full disclosure and provisions only after the user clicks Accept. No install or wallet request happens just by selecting the provider. Returning from the account-link browser refreshes the visible balance card.

The public app token comes from `PUBLIK_APP_TOKEN` or a root `publik-app-token.txt`, which Electron Builder includes in the app archive. A `pat_` token is public by design and may be committed. The registered listing is [oatmeal-vedsoni-dev](https://publikhq.com/oatmeal-vedsoni-dev), owned by the publisher of `VedSoni-dev/oatmeal`. The shorter `oatmeal` slug belongs to a different repository. The public app token is committed and packaged; personal-key and local options work independently of it.

Provisioned `pk_` keys are atomically saved with mode 0600 under `~/Library/Application Support/publik/apps/oatmeal-vedsoni-dev.json` on Mac or `%LOCALAPPDATA%/publik/apps/oatmeal-vedsoni-dev.json` on Windows, following Publik's shared credential convention. They never enter IPC responses, screenshots, logs, exports, or repository files. Personal keys pasted into Settings use OS encryption instead.

The first-run card shows the balance, the returned cost disclosure verbatim, and one account-link button. Metering headers update the card. A 402 displays the service's message and its one action URL; other providers stay selectable. Logs contain only app slug, requested tier, HTTP status and charge. Requests reject redirects and oversized bodies, and carry idempotency keys. Credential provisioning fails visibly if its required disk write fails; an optional balance-cache write failure does not discard a completed model answer.

# Publik setup and verification

Oatmeal's listing is [oatmeal-vedsoni-dev](https://publikhq.com/oatmeal-vedsoni-dev), for `VedSoni-dev/oatmeal`. The separate `oatmeal` slug belongs to another repository. Its public `pat_` app token is committed in `publik-app-token.txt` and included in desktop packages. This token only provisions capped install keys for this app; it is not an account or install key.

In Settings, select **publik API**, choose a tier and accept the disclosure. Follow **Link this computer & pick a plan** to connect your account. The app shows the service's actual cost disclosure and wallet balance. A new install has no credit before linking. Personal keys, other providers and local models remain available.

## Recheck one small call

After setting up Publik in the installed app, run this from the repository on macOS/Linux. It uses the saved install key or `PUBLIK_API_KEY`, sends only the fixed hello prompt, and may spend a small amount of your Publik balance. It never puts a key in command arguments or terminal output. Do not paste credentials into an issue or chat.

)
```
On a 402, use the response's `error.message` and `error.top_up_url`. On a 503, wait ten seconds and retry once. This check does not read personal keys encrypted inside Electron Settings; use the app UI to verify those.
Build on the target OS and architecture so npm installs matching native dependencies. CI targets Apple Silicon, Intel Mac and Windows x64. A Mac build does not validate Windows audio.
A local Apple Development certificate is not a substitute for Developer ID signing and notarization. Do not publish a development build as a notarized release.
Update package and lockfile versions, run checks, and create a matching `v*` tag. Tagged builds fail if signing configuration is missing. Electron Builder uses hardened runtime, audio permission descriptions and entitlements on Mac. With Apple environment variables present, its notarization integration handles submission. Artifacts are attached to a **draft** GitHub release.
Before publishing, validate on both platforms:
- Clean installation, microphone/system-audio permissions, refusal and retry.
- Real call with headphones: You/Room transcripts; ending screen sharing produces a visible warning.
- Long recording, processing backlog, app restart, audio recovery and final words on stop.
- Offline transcription/summaries after model download.
- Real subscription login/generation, disconnect/reconnect, plan-limit failures.
- Valid/invalid API keys, model changes and provider errors.
- Import/export and upgrades preserve meetings/models.
- Mac notarization and Windows certificate identity with platform tools.
WhimprFlow informed the platform boundaries and release checks. Oatmeal uses Electron Builder rather than copying its Tauri scripts. Never reuse another developer's signing identity or app token.
# Verification — October 5, 2026
Tested on the development Apple Silicon Mac. These results do not claim Windows or Intel Mac runtime coverage.
## Passed
- `npm test`: 16 passing tests. Core contracts cover concurrent writes/restart recovery, credential storage boundaries, API formats, long-meeting reduction, original-source local output, and Publik consent/provisioning/precedence/metering/error handling.
- `npm run test:desktop` with the synthetic audio opt-in: 3 passing tests. Actual Electron windows verified create/edit/search, settings, cloud consent, restart persistence, renderer isolation, compact layout, audio capture through AudioWorklet, local Whisper and successful audio-file cleanup. A separate Publik flow uses a mocked external service with the real main process and preload: explicit provisioning consent, balance/cost card, no renderer key exposure, exact 402 action, account linking and successful summary retry.
- Real local Whisper Tiny inference correctly transcribed: “The design review is on Friday. Maya will send the onboarding draft tomorrow.” The speech fixture was generated by macOS text-to-speech; no real meeting or microphone was recorded.
- Real local Qwen 0.5B inference selected meeting excerpts. The final notes preserved the Friday review and Maya's commitment; the local question flow returned her original statement. Direct freeform generation proved unreliable on this model, so the built-in local path now only renders original evidence.
- Packaged `.app` launched, loaded Whisper from disk, and started the bundled Codex/Claude account runtimes with fresh, signed-out Oatmeal profiles.
- Packaged Publik setup recognizes the real public token without environment configuration and remains consent-gated.
- macOS ARM64 DMG built with Electron Builder. This development artifact is unsigned and not notarized.
- Independent visual reviews addressed low-contrast text, truncated provider status, compact spacing and keeping Settings' save button visible.
- `npm audit`: no reported vulnerabilities. `git diff --check`: clean.
## Still requires validation/setup
- Real microphones and system audio on Mac, Intel Mac, and Windows; OS permission denial/recovery and long live calls.
- Mac/Windows CI was triggered on draft PR #2, but GitHub blocked the hosted jobs before execution due to an account restriction. No Windows or Intel build result is available.
- Browser sign-in completion and a live generation using ChatGPT/Claude accounts. Only signed-out runtime startup was verified.
- Paid API calls for OpenAI, Claude, xAI and OpenRouter. Their protocol adapters were verified with mocked responses; no personal keys were used.
- Publik: the owned `oatmeal-vedsoni-dev` listing is live, its public app token is registered and packaged, and a real test installation was provisioned (HTTP 201). The first live chat request returned HTTP 402 with zero balance; a successful live generation still requires linking/funding that test installation. No model response or charge has been verified yet. See [recheck instructions](PUBLIK.md).
- Distribution certificates, notarization, Windows signing, and publishing a release.
The original browser workflow remains available separately; it was not included in the desktop recording test.
*An open-source Granola alternative with a twist: there is no app.
A tiny local recorder transcribes your meetings with Whisper — and the AI you
already pay for (Claude Code, Cursor, Codex…) writes the notes, answers questions,
and keeps your team's knowledge base in sync. No bots joining calls. No accounts.
